Linden position on rerezzed temp structures?

I was just speaking with a friend in-world who had build a building on their land which was rerezzed temp (ie, temp-on-rez, but with a script that refreshes it regularly, so it's effectively permanent)

She was using this to avoid prim limits on the parcel (since temp-on-rez prims don't count against your limit). Now, I always believed that this was considered bad form (since those limits are there for a reason!). However, she then claimed that 2 Lindens came down and checked the structure and said it was OK and not causing lag!

I have no reason to suspect that she'd lie, but is that plausible? Is there an LL official position on the use of rerezzed temp structures to dodge prim limits? I don't really want to attack her, it's just that if the official position is that it's OK I need to rush off and reserve a share of temp-rez slots on the sims I've got land in :)

Rezzing and rerezzing causes lag, running a timer script to rez and rerez causes lag. There is a certain amount of "buffer" prims allowed per sim for a reason. She shouldn't think that she is entitled to use that sims buffer prims 24/7 (I'm assuming she uses it even when she is offline), unless she owns the entire sim. If it is allowed by the TOS (which i think technicaly it is), it's in the same bad form as Bush signs. It may not be "wrong" legally, but it is still in b ad form, morally. I seriously doubt she would get a ringing endorsement from any Linden for it, probably more along the lines of "well... it's not a TOS violation :-/".

It depends which Linden you ask. Ask a Liason and they might say - "Yes, sounds lovely. Good luck!". But ask somebody like Andrew Linden and he'll probably kick your head in for being stupid and selfish.

You can get permission to crash the grid if you ask the right Linden.

It *definetly* lags the sims. I used to do the same thing on a much smaller scale, to keep a sword rezzed on a display stand - You could go into sim stats and see the sim flicker each time over 200 prims were quick-rezzed. I stopped doing it when I realized the impact it was having.

I asked Nova Linden.

I did happen to have a popgun aimed at her head at the time though, and it was just after she'd had her hair done too. But that's beside the point.

Ah, OK, that figures, You didn't need the popgun either. She encouraged me to crash the snowball fight sim at Christmas with a wand thingie I got from somewhere or other too...

I usually ask my Pocket Linden if it's okay to bring down the grid about five seconds for the 'unplanned maintenence downtime' starts. He doesn't really have the chance to answer, but I assume it's something akin to."Well. I guess it's okay. Since you can't stop it any... OMFG What the hell is that th-*END MESSAGE*"

I don't think we really want to hear about conversations you have with your "Pocket Linden".

Oh, thread topic, yeah, sounds very bad to me, don't do it kids or they'll try to fix it so we can't and it'll break something.

What, you don't have one? Mine is full size, and is also my subbie. I suppose I could sell a plush one, too.

Are you suggesting that whenever LL 'fixes' something it breaks something else? I can't BELIEVE that!

Is this rerezzing of a structure, actually any different from the 'holovendors' scattered about SL , other than that it rerezzed the same object, whereas they rez a sequence of different objects? I'd have thought a holovendor might be worse as they often rotate the object for sale, and rez them in quick sequence if you page through the items for sale, or do they use a different principle?

Rezzing when switching items? Some do, some don't.

After dealing with an out-of-control freebie holovendor that rezzed hundreds of copies of a single object and nearly taking a sim offline, I decided to write my own. My goal to make it as sim-friendly as possible, so the vendor operates in 2D mode most of the time. (ie: Just displays a poster.) The user has to specifically request 3D mode to get a holo item, and the vendor reverts back to 2D after 30 seconds as I hate seeing blank holovendors. When you switch items, it also defaults back to 2D mode.

Continously rezzing TEMP_ON_REZ holos in a vendor (especially when nobody is around) is just a waste of sim resources -- IMHO of course.

As for rotating TEMPS, I can't speak for all vendors, most I've seen use client-side rotation (ie: llTargetOmega) so it's not that laggy. The mere act of rezzing that TEMP item over and over causes more lag.

If you want to know the Linden position on this, maybe you should post in the Answers forum, or whatever it is they call the Hotline these days.
