Okay. I have alot of free crap I've collected that is in various states of open source. For this example I'll use the Innertoob. My Innertoob (tentatively titled the UberToob), has a little flag, a cupholder with drink and 'lap' seating for a second rider. It also has a short hopping ability as well as the ability to stop.

I intend to sell it for L$75-150 depending on additional, completely unneccessary features and colorschemes.

Now. Alot of people will resell crap without making edits, improvements, or more than a little texture change. They resell them for prices like L$3000 for a free item available in the library.
I admit this is my version of a freebie, and it's not for sale for that much. The original (as original as I can find) freebie will be included in the packaging.

It'll allow me to pay for my store space and develop original items without going broke.
And... the code in the freemixes will be open source as well.

Thoughts? Ideas? Flames? Offers? Beuller?

Id say youve put sufficient work into it to charge a small fee Burke.

I'd like to think so. I have enough ability to code simple things, and I look at more advanced opensource code to see how things work and see if I can't improve it.

Given that you're including the original as well and giving credit to the designer, I don't see that as a problem, unless the original included a licence to the contrary or something.

Of course this is all after the purchase has been made.

I don't think this is a problem, but to avoid asshats you might want to make it clear prior to purchase that this is a "Former Freebie - Enhancements and Modifications by Burke". Your choice though. Not a big deal.

Can't you just rewrite the script / rebuild the model from scratch ? It shouldn't take that long and you'd be safe and sure.

I do as well, but until the term gets picked up most probably won't think twice about what the word is conveying.

There's a sign that explains it. The freemixes will usuall have all new bodies and designs. As well as improved code. Writing from scratch isn't something I always have time for.

Heck, Ill be saling an item (now currently only available through me or at bella Domela's kolton fundraiser) 'freemix'

Not for alot mind you..but enough to represent the tinting work I did on portions of it, the idea, and the time implementing said idea.

The end result is actually quite beautiful from all who have seen it (I gave free copies to friends).

I usually make stuff for my own petty amusement, and give it to freinds. But alot of people begged me for a store. so I set one up, But it's a little sparse. So this weekend if i can get a new monitor for the pc I'll bother to improve some of my stuff and put it in the store. :D

As long as the items were originally intended to be free and open source, and not accidentally that way through one of SL many many permissions oopses, I think it's great. As others have said, it sounds like you're putting more than enough work and creativity into them to warrant charging and calling them your own updated models.

True. I do need to look into some 'accidental' freebies.

Like..
- The Spindrift Jetski (Nice)
Slight redesign, some code changed to my preferences
- The G36 SpecOps Lagmaster Rifle (an admitted beta, but a fine weapon)
Code structure inspired what I have now in my Hellbring beta weaponry.

And agreed again. :)

And Jonas, in my sig, on the top floor of my store you'll see a "pet devil vendor", just walk up to the 4th floor and say "/1rose Jonas Pierterson" and the devil will give you one of the roses I made.. I made that (full perms... I think it was like 6 or 7 prims if that) freebie rose a while back but lets just say they're still popular enough that I've found them being resold for a markup and no-transfer.

My ex Vade Blair, (cancelled account,) made a couples animation where they both could hop on and ride the Linden free tube and I thought it was fine. He didnt charge for the tube, only the animation he made that worked with it, but he did charge for the animation.

In fact, I dont have one because I didnt buy one from him that cheap MFker lol. Godd thing he is gone!!

I dont think there is anything wrong with making and selling an accessory for an item made by another, even if that item is free. Examples of that are all the particle scripts made by tweaking numbers in the two main open source particle scripts that are out there, plus all the people who have used the scripts created by and generously shared by Francis Chung for animation related poseballs and overrides.

Your tube sounds like a lot of fun! I liked the one Vade had made and it was a popular seller for the short amount of time he was selling it in SL.

Yeah. Not necessarily the most interesting item, but the easiest to get a grasp on. I have half a mind to slap tires to it.... Nah.

Freemix sounds good.

I sell some freebies as well but at L$10, I am hardly making any money off them. Think of it this way, the freebies are on my lot taking up prim space. My store does not user vendors, and I am not planning to use vendors soon. So at L$10 a piece, they're helping me pay the lot fee and believe me what I make in SL does not even come close to my land ownership fees.

If the creator gives something away with the copy and resell priveleges, they should understand that the item may be resold -- end of story. It is time to be adults about this instead of whining children. If you don't want something you're giving away sold, flag it as no resell.

<soapbox>
I don't understand why resell and transfer are in the same category btw. Yes the item changes hands in both cases but it seems to me these two are completely different transactions. I would like to request a separation of resell and transfer.

My Freemixes

I've modified the Linden "Lateen Boat" script to allow you to use it in a guest boat... if someone borrows the boat, 5 minutes after they leave it it'll return to the location they started from... or they can click it to go back immediately.

I've set them for sale at L$5, full perm.

I've also got a modified t00b with a slightly different solution for the same need... they stay within a certain distance of a predefined spot. Maybe I should sell 'em too?

And I've used some free "Charcoal Hawk" wings as the holders for my show/hide wings script... that one's freebie priced, though... L$1.

If you have Transfer you can resell in a vendor, so there's not much point.

I asked Philip about this at a Town Hall over a year ago, and his answer was that Copy and Transfer were already seperate and one had to be enabled. That didn't answer the question at all, and made me wonder if he'd ever played with the permissions.
