**posted this in Help Wanted too, because i'm confused and lost and GAH SOMEONE JUST HELP ME OK?**
well i just started SL today, and i'm confused. i REALLY dont want to use a human avatar, i'd like to build my own, but i cant find any help anywhere on finding where the heck i'm supposed to edit the avatar.
is there a special program i need? or is there an in-game editor so i can make myself an anthro dragon avatar?
i have NO CLUE whatsoever, and i'm really not tech-minded. so please, keep any and all answers simple for me ok? XD
also, i cant afford a paid account, so i dont have any in-game money to pay anyone, so i couldnt buy an avatar from anyone. so dont reply with "ooh i'll make you one for such-and-such amount." because i doubt i'll make any money in-game.
I JUST DONT WANT TO BE HUMAN >.<
so yeah, any and ALL help would be appreciated.... ;;

From: Ziirah Ni I JUST DONT WANT TO BE HUMAN
You've made the first step. But we need a tad bit more information. What *do* you want to be? A furry? A stone? A dragon? A wisp of light? A water elemental? Pure energy? A mushroom? Yesterday's newspaper? An empty milk carton? The easiest thing to be is a plywood box. That's non-human and extremely easy to construct.

Yep you can be anything but the invisible man. Sure you can be invisible but you actually just become a floating name tag then.

Welcome to SL. You can do this with prim attachments-- that is, pieces like head, tail, paws, etc. attached to your body. If you can get hold of one of the freebie furry avatars available (I believe YadNi's Junkyard has something like that) you can examine the parts and see how they're put together. You can build your own parts with the in-game edit tools; find a sandbox, click the 'build' button on your screen, and choose a shape. You can right click the shape and choose 'edit' to change the look of the piece, move it around, etc. Complex things like heads and tails can be built out of several prims put together and linked. (Right click one piece of the thing you built, choose edit, hold shift, click on each of the other pieces of the thing, and choose 'link' from the tools menu on the menu bar.) You don't really need to spend any money to get a non-human av; all you really need is to spend a bit of time experimenting with building and attaching pieces. (Once you have a body part built, right click it, choose 'attach,' then the body part you want to attach it to; right click again once it's attached and use edit to position it on yourself.) Good luck, and have fun!

There are free avatars around. I think there are some at NCI, the New Citizen's group.
There's a furry avatar in the Library folder. It'd be funny to have Library Furry day and have as many people as possible wear that av all at the same time. New folks coming in might think they wound up in Furcadia or something.
Yadni's Junkyard has some avatars. They may come in a box that costs one linden, or there might be some that are totally free.
I got someone who is registered with slboutique.com to send you a free pikachu avatar from slboutique. You might want to sign up with slboutique and slexchange and see what other free stuff they have there in addition to avatars. It' s a lot more efficient than looking around inworld.
I have seen a free Luskwood avatar, a ringtail avatar, I think. I don't know if that is still available.

Last time I looked there was a vendor for these free avs in Olive. I don't know if it's still there, but it's worth a look-- I don't have the exact location, but if you look up the Upside Down Room in Olive, there's a patch of forest next door. The vendor should be at one end of the forest.

For reference, the Luskwood Ringtail is the furry av in the Library.
Comes in male and female forms.
There are some other decent free avs out there as well. :3
