Making and not editing an Avatar

The Editing capabilities under Appearance are not enough for what I want to do. I don't want to make a furry - but I'm assuming there's got to be another way people make avatars - because furries certainly don't come from Editing Appearance. How is that done?

One way to research how to do it would be to locate a free avatar similar to the one you are trying to create and "dissect" it, so-to-speak. From what I've seen, most of the complete avatar overhauls are done with wearable prim shapes (like hats, but not hats).
