Are there any other good Role-Playing games out there, comparable to SL? Not much interested in 'hack n slash' etc. More into it for the friendships. :)

I am sure that someone will pipe up and tell you this is not an RP game, so I'll skip doing that.

ActiveWorlds, There, and Cybertown are somewhat like Second Life.
(Assuming Cybertown is still in operation)

Off the top of my head...

The Sims Online
There
Project Entropia
Half-Life2
Moove
IMVU
Active Worlds
Habbo Hotel

I've personally only played TSO, There, IMVU (think 3d IM client), and Moove ("ditzy wuv world, which I hated ROFL", Active Worlds, and attempted Habbo, but never got it to work.

I hear that China was going to invest $1 Billion in a online world about like SL, but I haven’t heard much since. Microsoft was also supposed to be developing an SL style world, but I haven’t heard much of that either.

What was that socio-something-or-other game-ish thingy that I (obviously) never looked into but remember hearing about... that was based on sexuality or something?

I think it largely depends on what you mean by an RP game ^_~

As someone said, SL would generally not be considered an RP game, but if you're looking for something kind of like SL but with more traditional 'gamey' elements, the genre you're looking for is called MMOGs or MMORPGs (For Massively Multiplayer Online Games/RolePlaying Games).

They're the latest big thing so there's hundreds of games out there, in almost every genre... Far too many to list! The most popular at the moment is World of Warcraft, which has some crazy number of players in the multiple millions - If you were looking to get into MMOGs that'd be the obvious place to start - I'm not mad on it myself, but millions of people are!

Beyond that, there most likely is a game for you no matter what you'd like, it's a bit hard to give recommendations without knowing your taste but since you said you didn't really like hack 'n' slash, here are some I hear are good (Haven't played myself)

The Sims Online is a bit like SL, in that there's no hack and slash or other things like that, but it has more 'gamey' stuff like skill building. It's basically The Sims 1, but online ^_~ Didn't do as well as the offline games though and I hear it's pretty quiet now.

A Tale in the Desert, which Osprey mentioned, is also a bit like SL in that players build the world, but it's more like a game than a sandbox - It's set in ancient egypt, and players basically work together to advance, learn new technologies, build cities and so on. It sounds a lot of fun and before I started SL I had thought about trying it, but was put off by the fact that building the skills you use (Things like architecture and blacksmithing) is a very long, slow process... Apparently ATitD needs a lot of time and work put into it. One interesting thing about it though is that it's probably the only MMOG with a definite beginning and end - Once the civilisation reaches a certain point (With pyramids I think), the game begins again. This restart has just happened, so now would be a good time to start it if you wanted to!

Both of those games don't have any combat at all as far as I know, but they're somewhat the rarity in MMOGs - Most are along the same basic lines of 'kill critters, level up, kill bigger critters', with 'do quest' scattered in there to liven things up.

That said though, even in those games you don't have to play alone, MMOGs have a strong social element - I'm not really a big gamer offline, but I've been playing MMOGs for years because I just loved playing with friends and chatting... I generally had more fun just sitting around chatting in town than going out killing stuff, which is why I'm so happy in SL now ^_^

Oh, one other thing you might consider, if you want the atmosphere of SL but some game-type things too... Keep playing SL, but occasionally go with a bunch of friends to play other games. A whole bunch of my friends and I just got done playing a free trial week of City of Villains (Which is about the anti-SL, but fun ^_~), and it's nice - You can log into SL, talk to people and then if you want to just head over to CoV and use your superpowers on those pesky do-gooders... SL basically becomes the town, and you're never alone when you're in the other game either!

Battlefield 2 is great. The vehicles and scenery are amazing. Although the conversations can get a little predictable after a while.

I certainly have lots of friends in Eve... and several that came from SL too.

Only try eve if you have good eyesight. The download is more than half a gigabyte. Never met anyone but I only played for an hour, then gave up, I must be too old. They currently have a 14 day free trial (without cc required lol). Normally $us 19 something/month.

SL is looking pretty good!

Try "Eve Online". You'll make lots of friends there.

You'll also find a mature community on par with SL's,but perhaps minus the XXX open-endedness. Surprisingly for an MMORPG,it has a strong emphasis on individual reputation (a bit like SL),and all immature/TOS breaker people are quickly dealt with and BANNED,as far as I am aware of. CC will be needed also on the trials,I think. (I had 30-day CD trial and I had to give out a CC)
The only problem that people consistently bring up is the 'travelling'; yes it can be long at times but because EVE isn't a major drain on your PC,feel free to play say Second Life while engaging a so-called 3 hour autopilot trip.
Worth a try at least.
Day 1 new players have been reported to kill month/year-old players,so it's not all about bigger ships either.....

I'd bet half,if not all the Lindens have tried this game. :)

Battlefield 2 WAS great before Dice raped the game in order to make it easier for retarded people with no gaming skills what so ever excell in their shitbird ranking system. The vehicles and scenery are amazing. Although the conversations can get a little predictable after a while.

I fixed your quote Starax so it accurately portrays the current BF2 ; P

Yeah, I'm bitter lol, I've played the game in competition since the first day of release, and what started as a fairly well balanced game for comp has gotten progressively worse with each patch.

Yeah, that's the one. A few SLers have played there... indeed, most of the community from Sociolotron came to SL...

I doubt it... if they had, they'd surely have brought back some knowledge of how to run a game on this scale.

Well, I think Unknown Armies, Exalted, and Nobilis are pretty nice... although, at the end of the day, it never hurts to be conversant in d20.

...

... sorry, I got all old-school for a moment, there.

Was the migration after Sociolotron began charging to play? :)

I checked yesterday and it's $4 for the first trial month, a bit more after that. And of course you get the snazzy 10-year old graphics and gang wars... with SL you get 5-year old graphics and gang wars.

Was about then yes... I left there last New Year's Eve... although, it started before then... by about 6 months or so I think.

URU online is being revived, due out this fall I think. When it closed in 2004 much of the URU population came to SL. Another one in development that has been given some attention is "Naughty America," which I suspect is an AOL product.

I found the players in ATITD to be the most unpleasant and unsociable group of people I have encountered in any virtual community, which made game immersement difficult since progression in ATITD required group effort....plus the game itself was BORING!!

There is an interesting quirky platform called The Universal, which is a conglomeration of virtual worlds created by other players.

The description is as follows:

"The Universal is a free, massively multiplayer online game in which you explore a virtual galaxy with worlds owned, run and populated by other players. Each world in the galaxy is different, with different themes and gameplay styles - from persistent economies to arcade-style blasters."

There are some really funny quirky virtual worlds and player created games to explore there, and it's a good short term laugh. Plus, you can create your own game free of charge it seems.

One that I would love to see progress into serious development is Frontier 1869. The game sounds fantastic but they cant seem to get past the funding problems.

I looked at NA's website, but the game looks like a horrible Flash animation with a webcam inset in the corner.

I'm mostly going to be interested in seeing how many people jump on the idea of broadcasting their webcams via a game. And here, some of us think a verification flag is a violation of privacy? :)
