What do you think about all basic accounts should have thier alts listed in thier profile?

It would bring more premium accounts for LL and also reduce griefing and allow residents to acknowledge all alts for access and banning lists on land.

Discuss....

No. I dont want to have pay for a second account (which i mainly use to test permissions or poses) just to avoid people bugging my alt when I want to get away for a few hours.

And if that basic's alt is a premium? Do you then list all premium alts too? Or is this only where all of a person's alts are basics?

Personally I think listing any alts is a breech of privacy, which I gather means it'll be in the next update.

.

Hmm, not quite sure... but if you wanted to keep your privacy , one would then have to only have premium accounts.

Rather expensive just for a way to avoid screenfulls of IMs. A bit limited too... how many credit cards would we need, lol?

One of the reasons I suggest this being done... lets say you have Madam X harrassing you or you just prefer to be sure that you keep your distance from Madam X, and not knowing if Madam or Sir Y, standing next to you is really Madam X, it could be a scary and uncomfortable feeling...
I have a friend that broke up with her Sl love, and is getting chased and harrassed all over SL by the X's alt... not cool =/

Hmm good point, maybe LL should just make it so that if you ban or mute one Avatar from your land it will annonymously do ALL alts linked to that account... would that be possible?

They do have that new hashing key thingy and have been talking about new improved muting. I dont see why they might not be going that route.

Probably possible, though maybe not easy... Certainly a better suggestion than listing alts though. There are a few people I'd like to ban that way :p
I suppose, at least in teh forums I can ignore them.

While originally I thought this was a good idea, I'm begining to think its a very bad idea as well. Here's why:

Lets say I'm being harrased and want to get away from someone that wont leave me alone. So I make an alt and start hanging around my friends again. The person I was trying to escape from suddenly notices a lack of my old avatar from being around in the usual places I would hang out in. They then think I'm using an alt. So they mute my OLD avatar and then immediately go to the places I hang out in. Eventually they'll see a new avatar that they dont know thats muted. Being the only one of their mute list they KNOW that it's me in a new avatar since it was auto-muted. And tada, I lost my privacy.

But I think this whole thing could be solved if there was online privacy protocols installed.

Then you could select who could see you online or just block every damn one and go about ya biznezz

Absolutely, positively and COMPLETELY opposed to this!

As far as I am concerned, the only people who have any right to know what alts are associated with what other accounts are the Linden Labs employees, and then only for enforcing disciplinary actions. There can, and absolutely should, be a way for the Lindens to ensure that a disciplinary action against one account automaticly affects all that person's other accounts the same way, including banning their hardware from creating new accounts while banned. There is also no reason why the Lindens can't implement controls that would allow land owners to ban one person from their parcel, and in so doing have that ban automaticly affect all alts of that person. But individual users DO NOT need to see those cross-reference lists. No way!

I am a roleplayer. I spend countless hours of effort creating believable, rich characters that are fun and interesting to interact with. Each of those characters has a distinct personality, gender, species, background and other particulars. To publicly expose the actual link between the author of my characters and all the assorted roles that I play would be like editing a print book, and replacing all the names of all the characters with the name of the author of the book! It completely destroys the illusion of reality that I, as a roleplayer, strive to create with each character. Force me to expose all my alts, and I may as well not bother with roleplaying here.

In SL, I only have a few accounts so far. But in some of the other RP forums that I play in, I have as many as 20 different roles that I play. There are people who have interacted with those characters for years, in the most detailed ways, and who never suspected that "Bob Paladin" and "Susan Moonshadow" (not actual names) were in fact played by one person. In fact, I am fairly certain that the vast majority of them can't even guess the actual gender of the person who runs the characters. (In the ficticious example above, "Bob" acts like a male and refers to his Player as male, while "Susan" acts quite female and refers to her Player as being female. Obviously, they can't both be telling the truth...).

And what about those who use alts just to get a bit of privacy to get some work done? I know sim owners and content creators who, when they are logged in as their main account, are constantly beseiged by messages and by people seeking them out. If they want a moment's peace, they HAVE to log in with a less well-known alternate account. In some cases, it's the only way they can get time alone in which to experiment and perfect their skills.

I am all for the idea of ensuring that if someone breaks the TOS, that all their accounts get punished for it. But "Outing" everyone's alts is NOT the solution to the griefers who use alts to harrass others. It harms the innocent far more than it would ever bother the griefers.

{EDIT}

And no, I'm NOT going to upgrade to a Premium account for every one of my existing accounts, NONE of which are Premium now, just to protect my privacy! Being a Premium member offers absolutely NOTHING to me. I do not WANT to own mainland property. I have a perfectly nice parcel on a private island, and am quite happy with my sim owner. The content that I create allows me to earn more Lindens than I can rationally spend, with plenty left over each month to cash out so I can earn some extra pocket money. So I certainly don't need to pay for Premuim so each account gets a weekly 'allowance' that I would just cash out anyway.

{/EDIT}

whats the new hashing key?

Hmmm, hard for me to explain since I dont know exactly how its created. But basically the current SL client gathers information about your computer's hardware and creates a unique key/id for that. I think when you get banned now, they dont ban your IP address they ban that hardware key that they have stored and associated with your profile. There are ways around it of course so its not rock solid.

Do a search on hash and you might find some threads explaining it better. But each account that logs into SL on the same PC gets that hash associated with that account. I think.

So I was thinking they could let you ban a player which in the background would basically ban that hash instead of just hte player. So it would block that pc instead of the account.
