It always seems such a shame to me that with all the possibilities, and the talent available, amongst the playerbase, people always seem to sink to 'sex' as being their main focus of gameplay. People are losing so much of the potential of SL when they concentrate on this one aspect. There are rules, actually, about what is and isn't permitted in public areas. I shouldn't have to be worried about going anywhere for the risk of getting offended by someone else's inability to comprehend some standard of decency. Lewis You're kinda assuming that sex has to be the main focus of gameplay for people involved in sex in SL. What about the people who use it to "enhance" their second life? Like married couples , couples in love and so on. Slex can also just be "recreational" and not the main focus of the SL experience of people ![]() Just because people do have sex does not rule out having fun in other parts of the SL world as you state. _____________________

It always seems such a shame to me that with all the possibilities, and the talent available, amongst the playerbase, people always seem to sink to 'sex' as being their main focus of gameplay. Memo: People like sex. Virtual and real. The main focus of "gameplay" in RL, despite all the possibilities of reality, for most humans - and animals - is sex. Sex isn't dirty. Neither is the human body. De-wash thy brain! Sex feels good. In and of itself, it can be an expressive art. Its also been one of the most essential acts, passed from generation to generation and throughout evolution, to continuing life. It doesn't shock me one iota that people like to explore the possibilities in the world - real or virtual! Regards, -Flip _____________________

Speak for yourself, Flipper. I have it on good authority that my parents never, ever participated in such a filthy, vile, disgusting act as sex. I was hatched. ![]() P2 _____________________

To answer your question, sex-related merchandise makes up a huge part of the Second Life economy, from poseball animations to chatty genitals to SexGen beds and escort services. The Xcite concept was to let you control your av's response on a HUD and allow you to react to other people's interactions as well as to interact with the scripts in poseballs. This is the kind of ingenuity that got us to the moon. To further answer your question, people have been cybering since the first green-screen BBS chatrooms. It grew with IRC, then AOL, and all Second Life has done is given it a visual element that doesn't involve removing your clothes on a webcam. One project I read about a couple of years ago wanted to offer devices that you could actually wear on your body and plug into your USB port. Your partner could then click an icon and do certain things to certain parts of you, and vice versa. The devices were pretty complex and the prototypes would probably cost over $1,000. I think it died from lack of investors, I don't know for sure. I am sure, however, that the concept will one day be realized and possibly even incorporated into a virtual world like SL. www.sinulator.com To the detractors - Um sex is a part of life , therefore its a part of second life. If you dont like sex, mind your own business. And yes some manner of decency is nice - but maybe a should be more than just PG/Mature ratings around also. Whats indecent to some is just fun to others. Maybe PG/M/N/S? just a thought. |

I gotta say, I recently discovered sex in real life, and it is pretty darn fun. I'm a little put off by the expensive equipment and certification training, but otherwise...thumbs up!

The other night my husband wanted to try a new position, and I told him we didn't have that poseball yet! _____________________

It's the new "sorry, I have a headache." SL can have drawbacks too...in real life I don't remember anyone ever saying "I have to go AFK for a while" |

SL can have drawbacks too...in real life I don't remember anyone ever saying "I have to go AFK for a while" I did that at a meeting and everyone gave me a blank stare, except for the young IT guy in the corner. He laughed, and I immediately knew him to be a fellow gamer. _____________________

There've been people talking about those sort of devices for as long as I can remember. There's even a name for the technology - "teledildonics" (no, I didn't make it up, it's a real word). I read an article about 1 or 2 weeks ago saying that those devices were a success, specially with the war and all... them GI's need some lovin' too.. _____________________

There is emergent sex in all internet communities. SL's blank canvas for player-driven content, its open mind towards that content, and its all-adult userbase just make the sex more accessable. Terra Nova did an article a couple of wweks ago on a World of Warcraft prostitute, for instance. There's also a sex in games conference coming up this month. Sex in games or internet communities is certainly not new or radical.
You might check out http://www.slashdong.com for info on SL teledildonics. Pardon any typos, please, having a bad RSI day. _____________________
