From: Nolan Nash Like someone else said - maybe have it so you can only hide your dot on your own land? It's toggable

From: Cheyenne Marquez If it were not toggable perhaps I could see your point, if nothing other than the fact that it deprives users of choice. But since it is toggable, can you cite a reason as to why this would be bad idea? Perhaps I'm missing your point because I've never utilized the map to track green dots. Hence, I don't see the importance of it. It would make stalking and spying on people too easy. I'd be fine with just showing as offline and people not being able to get a beacon on me.

From: Cheyenne Marquez After all, it is only a dot on a map. ONLY a dot, she says. I'll have you know that sometimes it's a T or an inverse T!!!

From: Cheyenne Marquez Oh wait Hugsy...I think she means people just won't be able to see when we're online. Not invicible as in my standing next to you and you not being able to see me. Hi Cheyenne. Robin described "the option to toggle off your visibility on the map." That's pretty vague but I don't think it has anything to do with online or not. I think it's either removing your dot or taking away the ability to locate a friend. Maybe something else. Just to clarify what I was saying earlier: I can't get in-world right now, but I'm pretty sure that right now you can make yourself invisible in-world. You can pose yourself into a ball and then attach an invisi-prim sphere. People won't be able to see you (but your dot will still be on the map). Add to that the ability to remove your green dot from the map, and now you have total stealth. No one can see you in-world or on the map. If that is true of the whole grid, this is not a good thing. HP That's a very good point. *shivers*...suddenly I feel sooo vulnerable. The thought of who may have been standing next to me, at any given time, unexpectedly... I think I need a hug

A quick note to mention that I just remembered that you can turn on "Highlight Transparency". You can at least find people that way if you want to turn it on.

LL has been very receptive to listening to folks about privacy controls - here's hoping this means they're coming soon, so I can be on as FlipperPA at 3pm SLT without being flooded and relax for a bit! Regards, -Flip

Regards, -Flip dang sorry Flip - I thot you LOVED it when I stalked ya! but seriously. Consider this. Nowhere else on the internet gives the power to see whether you are online, logging on or off to EVERYONE ELSE but yourself. AOHells IMS, YIMs, Skype whatever. YOU get to decide if you wanna log in invisible, or toggle who on ya list gets to see you when you log in/off etc. Is it really that HARD to have the same features up in here? WTF green dot on map or not gonna help with all that other stuff? I'll be sad to not be able to stalk Flip no more, but it will be worth it if we can get basic internet privacy protocols set up in SL. Someone Lindie splain to me how they'd have to shut down SL for a week and overhaul the whole code in order to implement this. Anything less: add it in NOW. And in the meantime switch positions on Give Calling Card with Add Friend on the pie chart. ktksgbi

Why go to all the trouble of Fashion and design if know one will see it, will that cause a down turn in sales of clothing. Also when you are putting so much effort into having a hot looking skin, body etc invisibility is sort of pointless. And don’t get me started on the hair thing DONT

A compromise?
03-30-2006 18:02
As I see it, there's two issues here.
One, people sometimes want the ability to hide from their friends, so their green dot can't be tracked remotely on the map.
Two, people are afraid of the stalking potential if users were given the ability to erase their green dot from the map.
So how about this. When you go into invisible mode, your green dot disappears from the big map. So you can't be tracked. But it still appears on the Mini-Map, so you can see if someone close by is stalking you. Would that work?

LL 'looks into' a lotta things. Unfortunately past events have shown the odds that any particular 'looked into' item are generally quite slim.
I'll get excited once I actually see them say 'it's in the preview release.'

From: CrystalShard Foo I dont care about being mapped. I do care about showing up on Online Notification. I think you'd really have to have both or it would be an ineffective system. People would just get in the habit of hitting "show on map" to see if someone was really offline or not.

If they remove the dots how do we use the dot system to see if someone is "busy" 1 dot= someone alone, ok to bug them 2 dots= possible pixel bumping IM first 3-5 dots= Should be safe but might be an orgy depending on the person 5+ dots= party time

From: Rifkin Habsburg One, people sometimes want the ability to hide from their friends, so their green dot can't be tracked remotely on the map. False reasoning. The presence of your green dot on the map has nothing to do with whether your friends can track you when you are online. The ability of them to drop a beacon on you by clicking "Map..." is what lets them track you when you are online. If you can log in without showing up online (which is what people mostly seem to want) that problem is automatically solved... since the "Map..." button is grayed out and doesn't operate when you're offline.

From: Persephone Milk Isn't it possible when Robin says "the option to toggle off your visibility on the map" she is not really talking about removing your green dot entirely, but turning off the ablity for friends to track your location by selecting your name in the map dialog? At least this is what I hope she is suggesting. As long as my HUD av radar still picks up their presence, I don't mind the green dots done away with. llSensor is better anyway. it shows who they are , and how far away they are. Mini-Map just shows a blank green indicater... Could be anyone! :/

maybe camping chairs could automatically make you invisible on the map too.. that way the large gatherings on the map wont be mistaken for interesting gatherings!
and a 10 linden cost for invisibility!!
