I thankfully get to stay in the 30-39 category for 9 more months before I am forced to graduate to one of the senior brackets. =P

I like this. Not that I find it a huge deal. It's just nice to somewhat see the ages of those of us who actually frequent SL. I have to be happy to be in one of the larger age ranges at least thus far. 30-39 I belive it was. I'll be in that range for a bit still. So if this comes up a good bit later that will then change. Hope all is well with everyone!

Last set of gaming industry research I saw had the average age of gamers across all genres and platforms at 32 years old. Some plateforms or genres vary. I expect overall, Second Life averages higher than the norm.

@Zoe
Above the norm? I don't doubt that. And wow ... someone 60+! Cool. In the Sims chatroom long ago I had this conversation with a 29 year old woman who said her grandparents were very much into playing The Sims. That was something fun to hear. |

Actually, what Zoe was saying sounds about right. I see don't nearly as many people around my age as much as I see people in their 30s, 40s, or even 50s. Of course, this only from personal expirence. |

The average age of gamers is actually rising every year. Both because the older original gamers, like myself who started with Pong and Atari Space Invaders and the earliest computer games in the late 70s and 80s are continuing to age and to game. In addition, as gaming becomes a broader, more acceptable and integrated part of world wide entertainment (Gaming...it's not just for geeks anymore!), many older people who may not have gamed when they were younger are turning to gaming now.
I expect within 10 more years the average gamer age will have leveled out right at about the same as the average age of the overall population and stay fairly steady. The same is true of male to female ratios in games. When I started gaming in the late 70s, I was a rare "Gamer Girl"...but the most recent studies are showing about a 60-40 split now of males to females in gaming, and that number is closer to 50-50 in online games. Personally I expect that if we had a way to measure for certain, that SL may actually have more real women playing than men, placing it above the average in that way as well. The game industry has become very interested in studing who is gaming and why in the last few years as competition becomes more ferious. I work in the industry myself as a texture artist and 3D modeller on MMORPGs and it has become a serious point of discussion in the last few years as to how to design and marget more MMORPGs to the actual demographic rather than a stereotyped demographic that has not been true for over 20 years. _____________________

I turned 50 earlier this year. When I first started RPing online over 10 years ago, I got the feeling most everyone else around me was in their teens. How gratified I was to find out there were plenty around my age doing what I was doing.

I read an article recently that said that the median age for SL was 32. It might have been the wired article, but i don't recall. I do know that it was in an article linked from the SL page so if you wanna be sure, you can find it there.

Taking the midpoint of all ranges except the 70 range (for which I'll use 70), the poll's mean is 34.6. So including the teen grid and those who don't answer the poll, the mean may be a bit lower. The median however is easy to figure. Ignoring the 70 year olds for a moment (being conservative), take 60 and 13 (minimum for Teen grid), the median comes out to 36.5 already. That rises to 41.5 if you use 70 as the high end. What amazes me is the very low 18-29 bracket which AFAIK is the MMOG sweet spot. Even considering that the bracket is the least likely to participate in forums, the number is low. |

IE: 11111111135 - the median would be '1' not the middle value of '3'. _____________________

I'm 46. If the means and medians and what have you put the average age in the 30's, does that mean I am above average?
