I thot that was a Donald Trump quote. But my favorite part was this:

From: someone
As an example of technology being adopted in intelligent ways, Rosedale pointed out that the technology to build kites has been in Second Life for a year and a half, but people have just worked out how to make a kite (something that the Linden staff hadn't even considered!) in the last couple of weeks.

I think that's because I particularly long to see a lot of simple gadgets in SL that haven't come to be yet. I have a growing list of these, I checked kite off. (I'm so happy!) :)

Please post the remained of the list then, Torley, so we can start making it in SL :)

That's such an encouraging thing to say! You of course have done the "animals that roam the landscape with articulate legs and other appendages" which I have checked off--as well as great advances in nonphysical vehicles.

I've mentioned some of the items on my blog before, but here are some more. All of these must be fully functional, as opposed to just aesthetic:
  1. rock tumbler in which I can throw in 100s of rough stones and expect them to be polished (yes, this kind of relies on Havok 2+)
  1. puppet show with corresponding booth and attachments which would have animations triggered off in order to craft an entertaining show in realtime
  1. typing overrider which makes me wave a baton like a conductor and which makes a phantom orchestra appear out of a cloud of mist
  1. responsive shuffleboard like the game Shufflepuck Cafe
  1. full loop-based musicmaking workstation (I've seen impressive examples of this but not a widely-available one on the market yet, be it for free or sale)
  1. sonic soundshoes that'd play a sound in sync with every step. I don't think it could detect what kind of terrain you're standing on at present, but certainly, walking across the grass with a watery "SPLASH! SPLASH!" would be a treat.

Meh. What I find disturbing is he sees the need to say these things to keep the industry happy.

In that respect, he's probably right. Despite the fact I hate that quote.

If you're trying to attract decadent entrepeneurs to invest in your business, you want to tell them what they want to hear, I suppose.

Interesting that "life is a game", but as we all know, Second Life is not a game.

  • This could be faked by having a volume-detect hopper and having it orbit anything small and physical dropped in the top and rez polished stones on the bottom.

Animations are client-side, there's no way to sync them up with sounds.

It is, really, and it even has a scoreboard to tell you how much money everyone has.

The shoes make sense. But I don't think we have a good material detection setup.
What I'd really like is for SL to have a built in Animation Overrider.

Um... at least a year and a half ago I saw kites (and other cool things) being sold under the tradename R-Type.

To the best of my knowledge the merchant ceased selling the kites because of changes in SL that prevented them from operating properly any longer.

I was unable to find them for sale in-game today.

No, no, no, no, I've had a kite for at least 6 months that was laying around in my inventory. They just aren't very popular so they haven't been sold much.

If I am not mistaken Rickard Roentgen already made these or similar, ages ago..

Looks like the oldest kite related asset in my inventory is dated:
    Sun Jan 11 22:35:00 2004.

But that one had no dynamics, used the same wind info to fly around, it just wasn't as pretty.
The new ones have better dynamics and a spool of string that you can fly them with.. and can change colors, follow you over sim borders... and stuff.

I don't think that it should be a criticism that they did not notice kites until a few weeks ago - that's just another example of the size of SL and the amazing number of things people make. There is not really any way I can think of in which Linden Lab or Philip could ever be in the know about every single one of the gadgets and doodads we create.
