The Hippos

Hippos are cute. I just don't think they fit in at the InfoHubs, it looks a bit tacky in my opinion. Personally I think the whole InfoHub design is absolute sh*t! The tables are really bad, and the textures aren't anything special. Where is the variation, style, and true thought.

It looks like something that would had come out of beta, or even 2003. But we are almost in 2006, I thought SL design has evolved since then, but this clearly does not display it.

I do love most Linden built things, but I don't think this accuratley represents their talents in any way.

You do realize that a human being is designing this stuff, right? Jesus, ever hear of constructive criticism?

Well, if you look on the Information board - on the OTHER side from Infonet, the side you don't tend to SEE - you will see that there are four default Hippo ads.

(You will probably continue to see those a long time, too, since the boards are broken, and you can't actually put your own ad in.)

If you read that hippo ad, you will find something TOTALLY ADORABLE! Everyone is invited to take a copy of that hippo, and decorate it and dress it up, and send it back in!

Then they will put these various hippos out at the various Infonet areas, rotating them if they get more of them than there are Infonet areas.

Like the Cows in Chicago! And the other similar displays other municipalities have used, like - apparently - turtles in the north Atlanta area, lol.

To be fair I actually like most Linden made structures AND Altruima's builds and designs...I don't think this does their talent justice.

It was made by Linden Labs. They have no honor.

It's cute but I still think they are tacky looking...at least in a setting such as this, I just don't think they fit.

Well, I guess that's in the eye of the beholder, cause I think the hippos are cute, regardless of how long ago they may have been created. And wait till people have decorated them!

We ran around Atlanta taking photos of those cows when they had the cow thing in Atlanta. We weren't able to see the original Chicago version, but we had friends who did, and we bought the book about it (and gifted the friends with a couple of small ceramic cows done of those cows).

When I was in Austin a couple of years ago, there in the airport was the Austin version of the cows - I think it was armadillos! Very cute. Look all this up on the Internet for inspiration.

Anyway, this sort of thing has a history irl. It's a fun thing, too! Imagine how it will be to go around to the Infohubs and click on the hippo dressed up like Oprah Hippo or whatever, and click to see who made it!

If we can also click on them then to GET A COPY, this will be even more fun! I would love to collect the hippos decorated by other residents, the same as I loved collecting the Linden and Feted Inner Bears.

The community areas - Infohubs - etc., are the perfect place to do this, and it builds community, too, and should be a lot of fun!

Hi everyone!

I've just posted more information about what's going on here.

We've been thinking a lot about SL's past, present, and future lately. Hippos sum it up well. And, they're fun. I've heard residents who've been with us for awhile asking, "Where have the hippos gone?" and newer residents not sure what it all means.

We'd like to answer that, and on top of that, give you a chance to answer this question:


Take a copy of the Hippo Parent, Hippo Child, or both, and truly make them yours!

Actually I think it is a neat idea Every now and then in Washington, D.C. we have items like this displayed on the streets. One year it was decorated panda bears, another year it was elephants and donkeys.
