Things that aren't off topic, nor specific to the more specialised forums.

Whatever that is

What ever the mods decide is on topic is on topic. What ever the mods decide is off topic is off topic.

I'm all for resmods and modding. Really, I think the resmods are a fine idea!

But when the question is generally about SL .. isn't that on topic?

Honestly, I'm not saying the modding sucks.

I'm just saying that I have no clue what we're allowed to post here.

General is (as far as I understand), for topics that are about SL but that do not belong in any of the more specific dedicated forums. What's so hard to understand about that?

Personally I can't remember ever seeing a thread moved to off-topic that was ever in doubt as to being off-topic. Do you have a specific thread in mind that you are confused about?

Basically, the subsequent posts were all fairly silly to some degree, and although your inquiry began seriously, the responses quickly led the thread down an off topic road

I agree, very very frustrating, but I promise you my enquiry was very sincere!

Is Jeska Linden some kind of math hater or something?

Maybe you can post a poll about it, Anna! I know you're going to like polls. I can just feel it. :)

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound flippant. Here's another attempt. The answer to your question follows:

There is no way to know what is considered on topic for the General forum because it's entirely up to any given moderator at any given time to make that determination and act accordingly. Even if a thread is simply flagged and reviewed by several moderators, it's anybody's guess what their collective judgement will be.

To say they shouldn't move a thread becasue it's on topic or should move a thread because it's off topic is like saying the a judge has to find someone guilty of fraud because they have my money and won't give it back.

There are no solid rules. The best thing you can do for your headache is not care.

This thread is CLEARLY off-topic for General! ;)

I've always viewed General as the lobby of an office building. Its a good place to get a sense of what's going on in the building, poll for opinions, and so forth. The other truth is that every set of forums I've ever been involved with always has one main forum that everyone settles into and hangs out in the most... that's General here.

Regards,

-Flip

Fair enough, Flipper. I still believe that my earlier thread was treated unkindly by Jeska. I sense some kind of deep seated anxiety towards trigonometry was probably the cause of this.

From a recent Second Life Answers Thread

"The Off-Topic Forum is for discussions which are not about Second Life, meta-discussions about the SL forums should remain in the General Forum.

An exception – when someone posts a "why did my post get removed" post- then the thread should be closed and the thread started should be prompted to send any further discussion regarding post removals to abuse@lindenlab.com.

Sometimes what happens is threads start off on topic - one or two posts - and then are followed up by 20-30 posts of Off-Topic. In that case, the thread should be moved to Off-Topic for the continued discussion, with the recommendation that those interested in discussing the 'original' topic start another thread."

That wouldn't be Jeska, that would be me. The mods must be picking up on my vibes.

If a thread of yours is moved, taking it personal is just crazy :)

Yeah, that's a bad one, too, Lector - I just pick these things up from the "kids" ya know. It is a quick way of saying something that everybody understands, you gotta admit that - thus those things are useful. (And there is NOTHING WRONG with adding a PS to a post!!!)

Anyway, I was in too big of a hurry and goofed up, but I was going to point out to Diane that posts have been moved before for no reason, such as my own, about resmods, which now sits in ignominy in Off-Topic. However, I just got back from the beauty salon, and I look RAVISHING, dahling, simply RAVISHING, so I no longer care, lol.
