For future reference, you can find out the rate by opening SL and clicking on the $ icon at the top right of the screen. Put in however many $L you want, and it'll tell you how much US$ you'd be spending.
Just don't click OK unless you actually have 500$ :)

500 US dollars works out to around $L151,908.. a ton of money.

That depends wholly on whom you choose to buy from; all in-game merchants set their own prices. In a general sense, however, you could go shopping on that, depending on what exactly you want. What are you plannning to buy?

Ok. i'm a friggin' idiot. Didnt read the ***** post.

500L$ IN GENERALY won't last you too long.

For example:

Uploads: 10$ each for each texture/sound/animation upped.
Clothing: Simple items of clothing by themselves run generally from 25$-100$. Fully matched and accesorized outfits seem to start around 250$, but i've seen elaborate ones go for upwards of 750-1000!
Gadgets:Usually expensive. The Multi Gadget (flight assist, radar, all kinds of useful things. Trust me, you WANT THIS) costs 500$ last i checked. Good weapons start around 4-500$ and just keep going higher.
Games:
The most expensive thing you can buy in sl. Want to host a tringo match? You'll need $16,000 for the kit. Tech warfare? $12,000. Most multiplayer games of any kind in SL are very very expensive!
Rentals: Depends on the area, and how many objects (or "prims";) you can have on the land. Usually you'll be looking at around 500$ a week for small time, and for larger plots, 3-4000$ a week is not unheard of.

$L500 is about $US2 dollars. Most items are cheap in dollar terms, but $L500 won't get much. A few outfits maybe. Make sure to ask around at the welcome area for free stuff. Also check out the freebie stores by searching for FREE. That way no one will be selling you free stuff for $L500.

Search for the junkyard too, it has many free items packed into boxes for only $L1 per box load.

When you shop, don't always go to the stores on the top of the list, some of the best deals are at small shops with low traffic numbers.

You should... it can get pretty cold on the hills in the snow-sims, especially if your skiing and your mini is blowing around your elbows.

Well, general cost vary widely. I find browsing slboutique.com helpful for finding deals and prices.

Skins go for 1-2 thousand, but are not nessecary. The default is fairly good too.
Hair can go from 100 to 300 on average. There are 2 in 1 styles available which can be handy. The Gnu store has some good freebie/cheapbie styles in stock. still using one of them :)
Clothes can vary widely. You can pay 750 for one dress or 350 for about a dozen combinations. It really pays to shop around.

If you are still brand new, don't worry about money yet and go slowly through orientation and help island. Fiddle with slider ad nauseam. It's worth it.
Once you are on the mainland check out the newbie places. a good central hub is the new citizen center. You will also encounter freebies. Some of these are nice, some of them are ever repeating packages that take ages to weed through. But hey, it's free stuff :)

Feel free to IM if you want some more help :)

If you are just starting out, I'd head over to the GNUbie Store. You can find some quality stuff there either free or nearly free. Here's some more info from Linden Lifestyles.

Some good advice.. BUY NOTHING until you've checked the freebie places out and filled your inventory a bit. Some unscrupulous folks like to sell these items..

Was wondering what taking ya so long to respond.

OH BTW.. the extra 500L is a ripp off. Theres a few us already come to conclusion theres profits to be made by following Schwanson around with video capture running, we generally sale the resulting clips for half that.

Depends on where you shop and what you want. L$500 isn't very much money. It's only about $1.50 USD worth of game currency. Most people that I know, if they are purchasing Linden dollars, will buy much larger amounts. Like spending $10 USD to L$20 USD.

L$500 could get you a dozen or more cheap outfits of clothing. Or it might buy only one designer-label outfit of high quality with flawless seams and multiple pieces.

L$500 might buy 4 nice hairstyles, or barely pay for one.

L$500 is just short of what it costs for a good Furry Avatar, and less than half of what it costs for a fantastic furry avatar.

L$500 is less than half the price of a photo-realistic Human or furry female skin with full anatomical details.

L$500 is about the price of one set of male human genitals that are scripted.

L$500 might buy several pose ball sets, or might not quite be enough for a really good single set.

L$500 is less than half the cost of a scripted bed. It's less than 5% of the cost of a premium-quality, 100-amimation scripted bed...

L$500 might buy a reasonable starter home, with no furnishings. Most would cost more.

L$500 could buy an amazing selection of L$1 each 'freebies'.

It would buy you quite a few of the items I have for sale. Just look in my signature down there for a link to some of my stuff for sale on SL Exchange. (Shameless plug that is still on topic! Woot!)

Tat,

As one said skins are pretty expensive; and while they not required its probably one things ppl want most after some prim hair. Other day I was helping a newbie out I met by giving her a tour or of some the key places in SL. Along way I would point out freebie boxes to raid. Sadly cant rememebr name the store I saw the box in.. but there was actually a decent free photoskin in it. Its not tailored to looks ya might dream of but decent art put into it. If interested send me a IM so I dont forget and Ill drop a copy of it on ya.

500 $L would also get you one pretty swank vehicle. As has already been suggested, check with SLB (www.slboutique.com) and SLEX (www.slexchange.com) as it's a good way to browse items and their associated cost without actually flying all over SL.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Personally, I would set aside 25-50 $L of that just to raid YadNi's junkyard (you can use Search/Places to locate it). You'll find clothes, vehicles, weapons, robots, spaceships, swords, dolls... Just about anything you can imagine there. Sure, most of it might not be the same quality as purchased items but one can live pretty comfortably off SL's freebies alone. A single Linden (the money, not the person sort) can buy a lot. :)

Actually, the best skins are in the 250-500 L$ range. I've tried some up to 4000-5000, and I still use a 250L$ skin over them now... just better quality.

definatly check out the gnubie store, it has a whole bunch of prim hair, designer clothing and some great skins too, all around 1-5L. all designer stuff.

hmmm... there are several noobie friendly stores around that sell cheap as hair and shapes and things (cough cough... I have some cheap stuff for sale), ETD has some of her hair on sale for 5L and some noobie friendly hair for 50L, kin keiko does fantastic hair for only 100L.

if you know where to go and just avoid impulse buying, 500 will go a long way in sl :)

happy shopping.

Go to the Free Dove to get the *clothes* first, it's all free or $1L. Do a search for "Dove" under "places". They also have some good shoes.

You can get a (good) skins at the Gnubie store, too, and hair.

Check out the multiple shopping blogs out there, exclusively about shopping in SL. They give you great tips and often show you what an item looks like on an avatar, without having to buy it yourself.
Good luck.
