I don't get around much and am just curious what some of the common non-content related 'jobs' in SL involve and why they exist. Non-content here is not meant to be derogatory in any way, because some of the jobs involve content that is consumed live.
Dancer Do dancers do other things besides dance? Do they function more like hosts? How often do dancers double up as escorts/whores?
DJ Do DJ's double up as dancers, since they can DJ while leaving their avatars dancing?
Bodyguard What do these guys guard against? Are they really as dumb as they appear to be or are they just roleplaying? Has it got anything to do with adding prestige to a club?
Model Why do clothing designers need models? If multiple avatars are needed, Is it really that hard to overlay multiple avatars of yourself in an image editor? How many clothing designers use an external app to model their clothing using the LL provided avatar mesh?
Escorts / Whores Are these the highest paying jobs without being a content vendor? Do escorts normally work 'on site' at the clients place, or at their own premises? How do the customers normally pay for their services if they are attached to an 'agency'?
Children / Babies / Parents What are these folks required to do? (please don't hijack the thread) How is payment made for being a baby? Hourly? What do hired parents do?
Travelling Salesman Are these common? Do vendors send folks out flying around looking for sales? How do salesmen show their wares? Wearing a sandwichman board on their avatars or just rezzing them one by one? I've personally only met a few newbies selling free stuff and bought a few things to encourage them to stay in SL.
Some rarer ones I've known. .
Missionary / Priest Has anyone met a missionary yet? I've only met one. Do they preach seriously or just offer theology for discussion? Do people actually attend mass in SL on sundays?
Fortune Teller / Tarot / Astrologist I only know of one. She only comes into SL by appointment via e-mail. Anybody else do readings in SL?
Hired Griefers Has anyone hired a griefer to annoy another person? Do professional griefers exist? Professional meaning they cause grief without breaching the TOS.
Anybody know of any other jobs, please share. Thanks.

I would lump Land Baron's as partly content creating tho. Since they do leave a noticeable trace on the world.

Because using models can be fun, and some clothing designers want to display on a range of AVs without needing to take time out to make a different one that looks good. It's not that hard to overlay images, but if you can just do a snapshot, why not? From: someone Do professional griefers exist? Professional meaning they cause grief without breaching the TOS.
Unfortunately, yes: view spammers.

From: Yumi Murakami Because using models can be fun Has anyone used camp chair mannequins for their store? So instead of just sitting down generating dwell, they become static mannequins in a store display. You have to of course make sure they wear your line of clothing.

"annoying another person" is harrassment. Since harrassment is in the TOS, name one type of griefing that isn't harrassment? If it isn't harrassing to the target, it isn't to damned effective, now is it.

Some do all of the above, some don't, depends on where they work and what they choose to do. From: someone
DJ Do DJ's double up as dancers, since they can DJ while leaving their avatars dancing?
No reason they couldn't if they want to, the ones I know don't, they make more money just DJing From: someone Bodyguard What do these guys guard against? Are they really as dumb as they appear to be or are they just roleplaying? Has it got anything to do with adding prestige to a club?
They always look pretty idiotic to me, never saw the point myself either. The only real security anywhere is the owner of the land or an officer if it's group land... ban idiots, let the rest play. From: someone
Model Why do clothing designers need models? If multiple avatars are needed, Is it really that hard to overlay multiple avatars of yourself in an image editor? How many clothing designers use an external app to model their clothing using the LL provided avatar mesh?
I use models occasionally because it's easier than these other methods but I also generally hire my friends, otherwise yes I use just my own AV most of the time. From: someone
Escorts / Whores Are these the highest paying jobs without being a content vendor? Do escorts normally work 'on site' at the clients place, or at their own premises? How do the customers normally pay for their services if they are attached to an 'agency'?
I may be wrong but I doubt they make much money at all... I mean how many people are really hard up enough to pay for cyber? From: someone
Children / Babies / Parents What are these folks required to do? (please don't hijack the thread) How is payment made for being a baby? Hourly? What do hired parents do?
People do this? I had no idea. From: someone

Doubt there would be much point to going to that much effort. Rent a vendor. Some rarer ones I've known. . From: someone Missionary / Priest Has anyone met a missionary yet? I've only met one. I doubt any of these are even remotely profitable. From: someone Anybody know of any other jobs, please share. Thanks.

I used to try to hire newbies to help me test scripts but it got to tedious, and they don't take well to half an hour of sit on this, o.k. get up, o.k. now sit on it again. LOL

Its a bit hard to get data on these unless you're involved in it. From: Allana Dion People do this? I had no idea. I see this a lot in the wanted ads further down the forum, and they seemed mildly serious. Theres even one guy who is looking for a job, a girlfriend and 'parents' all at once. From: Allana Dion I doubt any of these are even remotely profitable. A 'job' doesn't need to be profitable. I'm hoping missionaries aren't supposed to be! lol. If it isn't harrassing to the target, it isn't to damned effective, now is it. Annoyance is hard to define. I find a lot of things annoying to me in world but they can't be deemed as harassment, since they don't annoy everyone in general. But lets not go down that road.

From: Allana Dion (Escorts)I may be wrong but I doubt they make much money at all... I mean how many people are really hard up enough to pay for cyber? I believe that the resident who currently makes the most money in/from SL began as an escort. That money was saved and "re-invested" in land baronry, if memory serves me correctly. Draw whatever conclusion you want about how profitable cyber-escorting is in SL and what is involved.

I spoke to one of her ex-escort employees before. It seemed to be quite reasonably earning, but she had to quit because it eventually required her to roleplay certain things which she didn't agree with. She eventually ended up doing the second oldest profession, being a builder.

From: Cottonteil Muromachi I guess you can make fighting a career. Dunno. I don't see why, with properly scripted weapons and rules, you couldn't have gladiators in SL. They'd have to be proper actors as well, though, give a good show, not just sit clicking the mouse button - you'd want drama, feuds, begging for mercy and so on. I don't know of anywhere that this exists though.

Oh, and there's always the Mafia to consider. http://www.thesimmafia.com/services.htmI have no idea how much actual revenue they generate from such activities, but they're not "content"-generating. Quite the opposite sometimes.

I'm not sure what you mean by non-content related, but you clearly missed any jobs such as reporter/journalist, property managers, and event hosts.

You have to of course make sure they wear your line of clothing. Someone posted that they do something like this, but I don't remember who. You could even pay off in outfits. Camp in the store window and you get credits for a new outfit every time someone buys the one you're wearing in-store.
