'Tis lag indeed. Either that, or some may have seen a scary white page with a technical error.

I have also had the problem where I make a reply and it shows as "0 replies" even though my post is actually there.

As observants know, these issues have been going on for several months--one reason is because I believe the forums are stored on the same server responsible for numerous other database stuff. So when they get used and hit frequently, the forums slow to a grind.

Not to mention, forum searches that can be quite intensive. We've already chopped down some of the search functionality but don't want to cripple search altogether. Yes, common words like "land" and "money" and "Linden" turn up blank pages when searched for in entire posts. :(

Also, another concern: attachments keep filling up quickly. We're monitoring this, but if it gets really bad, we may have to turn them off in the future and recommend an external hosting site like http://www.photobucket.com or http://www.imageshack.us

So, it's definitely not just you guys. And it's painful. :\

We do want to update the vBulletin version of the forums to the latest, but I don't know of any near-future plans to address this: priorities, priorities. (And for that reason, it's why we can't allocate resources like putting the forums on a superfast server all their own--other schtuff comes before.) There are many improvements in other areas which must be taken care of first.

(Irony: upon editing and re-submitting this, it stalled for a couple minutes.)

*waves back*

Thanks Torley. It makes such a difference when people go to the trouble to explain what is happening.

Interesting... I wonder why?

Perhaps:
This is due to overtaxing the forum server?
The Forum database it DIRECTLY tied to the asset server?
The database for the forum is choaking?

Seems the rest of the site, including user data, is fine. Seems to be a problem with the forums specifily instead of the overall site.

This means that 1. the forums are seperate from the rest of SL, and 2. they are probably NOT tied direct to SL's asset servers, and are instead using a bridge for some small bits of data.

As long as weird textures don't start flashing in the back ground...I really don't wanna see my av's face flashing all over here like it does occasionally in SL :-\

I think the invasion is over, lag has conquered the forums, an occupational government of lag has been put in place, and lag is running the show here now.

I welcome our laggy forum overlord. Sometimes it's best to bow to the inevitable.

Lagrime

:-(

Intermittent for me. If a thread is slow I "stop" and go elsewhere as I just figure there are a lot of changes going on in that thread. Can be rather annoying.

Isn't some narrowminded ignorant pig going to pop up and claim that using the word lag to mean anything other than slowness due to excessive signal transmission timeis just plain wrong, despite the fact the word lag, used in various ways to mean slow, coming in last, etc., predates the existence of electronic signal transmission by several hundred years?

"even experience"
Is this a reference to a specific use of "even experience", perhaps in connection with the gray loading texture?

If so I'd like to read it just to torture myself.

Ok, I'm pretty drunk right now, so this post may come off a bit funny, but here we go :)

I run 3 LARGE vBulletin forums myself for a living. We're talking several millions of posts. So I know a lot about this problem.

The problem here is the "Scheduled Tasks". It is cron-jobs for the initiated, for the unitiated, it is maintenance tasks that runs at regular intervals. These tasks update thread view counters, attachment view counters, send out welcome messages to new members and so on. There are about 10 different scheduled tasks running every hour, some at 0 past the hour, some at 5 past the hour, some at 30 past the hour, some at 45 past the hour, I hope you get the drift.

The bigger the forum gets, the bigger the problem gets, since the database will only get bigger with more posts, and those updating tasks will take longer and longer to complete.

What LL need to do is one of two things:

A) Reschedule the scheduled tasks, rethink what tasks really need to be done every hour. Do they need to update thread views twice per hour? Do they need to update attachment views that often? They need to look at the scheduled tasks in the vBulletin control panel and move some of the tasks to a daily schedule instead of an hourly schedule.

or

B) Get a way better server to handle the database. Maybe even two or three servers working together to handle the heavy database updating.

The problem is, as said above, with the updating of the huge database powering the forums. Either reschedule the tasks that takes all the computing power from the server, or assign a server setup to it than can handle the heavy load.

The forum's performance tonight has been absolutely terrible, one of the worst it's every been without shutting down altogether.

If I were a new user I would not be at all impressed with forum performance as abysmal as this nights have been.

Some of the forums may be of low importance, but the content creation forum and technical help, feature feedback and such are fairly important to users in getting the program to work properly and figuring out how to make the stuff without which SL is just a big empty terrain and sky.

Tonight's forum performance on my system has been bad beyond making jokes about it.
