Claude's announcement that he has formed a new faction is exciting news! The start of the election is only days away, so it's urgent that every current faction member speak with the new residents of Neualtenburg and sign people up.

While membership in a faction is not required of every resident, non-membership limits you in two important ways. (1) You are not eligible to hold an office in the government of the City, and (2) in the election itself, you can only choose your prefered factions; you can't choose from the individuals in the faction. Please use the "Test Voter" process that Ulrika has set up...

/103/f0/80549/1.html#post828136

to understand how the system works.

For everyone, please use the page linked on this post:

/103/88/80555/1.html#post829665

to review the various factions and what they stand for. If you need more information, please contact the following representatives of each faction (this is NOT an official list... its only off the top of my head):

SDF
Ulrika Zugzwang
Kendra Bancroft
Engene Pomeray

MPP
Pendari Lorentz
Aliasi Stonebender
Sudane Erato

DPU
Claude Desmoulins

Let's try and involve as many residents as we can in this election process! And, as for voting, while its not legally required, I shall consider it a personal affront if you do not :). Really, we managed 100% turnout at the last election... we must match that again.

How do we go about having folks register for a party? Would it be acceptable to have them post it to this thread or email affiliations to me? When we were small, it was typically done by word of mouth.

I presume that collecting individual resident data on the site is not yet a feasible proposal, as I guess it would require some system of site-recorded "membership profiles". I maintain records on each current resident for the purpose of recording their payment of monthly fees. It's a very primitive spreadsheet system, and thus not suitable for the long term. But perhaps for now, people could email or IM to me their faction selection, which I could collect and forward to Ulrika?

Of our current 26 members (there is one new member with deed in hand but not yet filed and transfered), I have 11 who have indicated faction affiliations. Is it appropriate to publish that list? Would that be helpful?

Gosh. That's a tough one. For a person like me, I wear my RL and SL political affiliations like a badge, however, I'm sure there are some who might not feel comfortable with such a published list. Perhaps we could take a poll. In the meantime, I'd certainly like a copy so I could add it to the code if it has political affiliations.

Finally, I was wondering if the LandData.txt file I fetch automatically is up to date. (The file is the one that creates the "http://www.neualtenburg.org/services/land" table that comes from your server). I'd like to use that as a source for checking citizenship automatically by the voting booth if possible.

It might be safe to list Gwyneth as SDF and Satchmo as MPP until/unless you hear otherwise, given that they currently represent those factions in the RA.

I'll forward a current list via email.

The LandData.txt file is mostly accurate as to current residents of Neualtenburg. The one exception is when a new resident has requested a deed for property they wish to buy. Although the deed may not yet be executed, I have recorded the ownership in that file so that others perusing the Land page see that the land is spoken for.

I feel that your proposal to use that file as a source to check citizenship has a higher value than persevering with my exception, so I will now cease filing land as "owned" when it in fact is not yet transferred. As of now, the page should be a completely accurate document of those whose residency is in good standing. If anyone discovers a discrepancy, PLEASE let me know right away!

For those interested in buying land, who are using the Land page as a source for availability status, please confirm that with me. I can always convey that another person is interested in the same parcel, and in fact cause them to committ or release based on the second person's interest.

Ahh, they are indeed members of the factions you mention. My intention in listing the names I did was only to select a few individuals from each faction who I knew would be willing the discuss the factions' platform. I'm sure Gwyn and Satchmo would too. Publishing the complete lists, tho, carries the considerations that Ulrika has commented upon.

I remain open to your thoughts about that.

I suppose people ought to be allowed to keep their affiliations private. Also, not knowing (with an exception or two) who is in what faction encourages people to vote for a platform rather than a faction.

It has now occurred to me that it would be nice to know, after the election, how many voters were in each faction or independent.

I think I can report those statistics without a problem. We tend to have a lot of independent voters, if I recall correctly, in N'burg. After the election, I'll do one of my famous post-election analyses. :)

So what is the decided upon way to declare your faction? IM/Email to Sudane?

Note: Satch is still alive, just very very busy :)

I assumed we were using the citizen members of the appropriate in-world groups, since that's how the voting booth will detect factions, right?

My understanding is that the script was unable to detect the member's group. So Ulrika must rely on a report to her prior to the opening of the ballot box of the various membership lists. I think that's still the case.

To clarify, I need to have your faction affiliations by tonight at midnight, as they are hand coded into the voting sytem. You only need to send me your faction affiliation if it has changed. If your faction affiliation is the same as last election, you're all set.

Since time is short, if your affiliation has changed, send me an email at Ulrika.Zugzwang@gmail.com.

You are not required to be in a faction. If you choose not to be in a faction, you will only lose the ability to rank members of a faction and to hold office. Otherwise you can still rank factions (vote) during the election.
