With the revoking of taxes, it would seem only logical to bein to build up. And with a cap at 750m, why not build huge, buildings that can't be seen from the ground. What SkyCity lacked in funding, class, and maturity (kidding, kidding... no flame intended) I hope the project will make up for.
Who would be interested in this?

Id be happy to help any efforts to colonize the skies. Ive myself built at high altitudes. Being an ATI user, and suffering constant, random FPS drops, I find it more stable (graphicly) working on projects stationed up high. It seems like the ground is difficult for the client to render.
I once talked to Ben Linden, who stated that the ground was the most time consuming rendering draw on the graphics card, next to objects.

Did he forget to throw in avatars? One would think that our super realistic and ultra customizable avatars, traditionally known for inducing unbearable amount of lag in even the best available hardware, would be the hardest thing to render...

this project sounds interesting... but can a user who just has a basic account get into these kind of projects?

Yep! (Although you can't own the land the project is on, you can contribute.)

I will donate this month's change of undies to the project (cosmonauts around the stratosphere may begin rejoicing now!).
I've thought about moving things up high, but when I go up to look around I just see lots of builds at all elevations. Course not as many as on the ground, but it's getting clutttered!

750m? Why think so small? If memory serves, Sapphire Bombay has made auto rezzing builds at 4km Z (and an elevator to get there). Does anyone know where how high the world actually goes? Mr. Zeeman? Anyone?

Yesterday someone gave me "speed" and I flew up to and above 10.000m. Though I never made it properly down again. When I got down it seemed like no one saw me, and I could fly straight through both the ground and houses. Had to log in and out again to go back to normal. I guess space travel can be a bit risky. I have a build which is currently set to autorez at that height on command -Adam

In other words, building "continuously" from ground level, how much of a gap will there be above 750m before you can begin to rez? High alt stuff is cool...it makes the ground look less cluttered. Just remember to make the ground look good! Plant a tree!

Rez means to create an object in the world, usually by dragging it from your inventory. Or optionally having a scripted object create something.
Something that is popular to create is a script that creates objects in a certain pattern. That's called an Autorezzer.
I'm certainly interested in this project, but I would like to make an important suggestion. There must be some stanardized form of docking. It's very easy to fall from those heights.
It would be great for me since it would give me something to do with my mighty Space Battle Fortress.

i think its a great idea to build in the sky. because if the oner of the land does not like the ground of his land he can build in the sky. But i dont know how to rez things in the sky ^_^

Aren't we already in the sky ?
There are a lot of "skyBoxes" around.
A place for quiet and privacy (except for script aided flyers)
I built one in Mocha on my 880m plot
Now I have moved to Bisque and am building one on my 1024m plot
I like to build huge glass boxes with Particles flowing beneath
Drop by for a look...my new one has only just started...and it is at 700m
Build a block on the gound..sit on it... Alter the y position to 700 and bang you have a start to your sky box.
Careful up there..u cant fly unaided !
And please plant a tree or 2 in your ground level land....bring back the nature look !!!!

Colonization of space is already well under way in Gray. There is a space elevator there that will take you from the ground to several different levels of builds, with extensive activity at cloud level and at around 500 meters high. The elevator terminates at an asteroid anchor at 768 meters, which is as high as the aliens will tolerate. On attempts to reach the stars, several stations were established via autorezzer as high as 4000 meters, however nothing will rez higher than 4096 meters. And, as it turns out, aliens would steal anything left above 768 meters overnight. That said however, Kazenojin sky city is already well developed, and as cluttered as any space you'll find around SL. Kazenojin - ambitiously clogging the skies since May 2003!

"I'm sorry Maxx, you clipped that mile-high billboard back there on your re-test. Your flying license is now officially revoked." *Rubber-stamp* "Nooooooooo!"

Ill help in any way possible,I really think this is a great idea (idea though, put a space skybox around the area and build it to look like a space station).

Well, as it stands atm in Gray, there's 3 build levels going on - 210m, 500, and ~700m I think.
I've put up some platforms and stuff at 210 metres, but for the mo I'm kinda out of ideas, so I'd welcome some help. I _think_ Kaz members have move/delete privs on the two empty platforms there, so feel free to put something suitable in their place if you want.
As for the the other layers, I think Chibi Chang has most of the build at 500m. I'm not sure about the space station, but Millie Thompson springs to mind. They may want help/ideas/etc.
Current themes appear to be industrial+mixed for 210, chrome & glass for 500, and traditional space-station grill walkways + glass tubing habitrail thingy for 700. Personally, I'd like to see a mix of styles for 210, as I had in mind The Raft from Snow Crash as an image, if you know it. Think many disparate air vehicles docked together, linked by ropes, ladders, makeshift bridges, etc. But as I say, any more ideas are welcome.

Oh yeah, Maxx - would you fail such a test if it meant you had to walk everywhere?

It'd be cool if the Lindens made a Space sim -- turn off gravity, and make it eternally nighttime.. Don't know how you'd do property rights, though, without some 2-d ground to base it on! Anyway, yes, I think building up in the air is a really cool idea. I've seen several high-up builds when exploring, but they mostly seem to be one-off. It'd be neat if a whole neighborhood did it, and had walkways linking the builds.
