Okay I need help or a couple extra brain cells. I can build all kinds of stuff on Blender and Wings...now prefer Wings. and I assume once Cindy's converter doe s it's stuff I only have to upload to SL.

I would be more then happy to help anyone with building, but I need help to get from building to Cindy's converter. I see people are doing it, but I get errors.

Could someone take me through a step by step..it may be a valued lesson for others.

Thanks
Justin

There is a tracker issue already open for an in-world obj->sculpty converter, and it has source. See:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1110

Only seven votes right now, it needs more. =)

As an example.. i can load the avatar mesh that linden supply into intellicad.. and see a perfect tessellated 3d avatar.. so i figure that i should be able to use just its head .. the joy at cutting that off cannot be described..:)

Zee told me you were looking for a way to import the SL avatar as an obj, cut off the head, and then export it as a sculpty?

Here it is, done with the AC3D plugin. (Images attached)

All I had to do is cut off the ears and then spherical map the head. The ears are better done as a separate sculpty, both because of resolution and because they are concave. Convex shapes are easier to map with imported models.

I don't know if your obj importer works the same way, but it at least shows it's possible to do!

It works directly in Second Life just like an image upload.

I just not getting it. It looks intriguing but is this a script. There's very little instruction at the web page in reference to this. Sorry if I sound stupid, but you know how it is jumping in the middle of a project and trying to do a crash coarse. Please help me understand what your program does and how to make it work.

I did stumble on a plug in that exports Wings to SL BMPs.. With maintenance I haven't a chance to see if it works.

Thanks

Since I got votes for the in-world OBJ importer, here is a binary to try it out:

http://downloads.sourceforge.net/oslcc/slviewer-1.17.0.12.VWR-1110.zip?use_mirror=osdn

It currently works with 64x63 mesh spheres created by any modeler exported as an OBJ file. Here are the instructions for Windows:

1) Copy C:\Program Files\SecondLife to you Desktop
2) Put the SecondLife-1.17.0.12.VWR-1110.exe into the SecondLife folder you just put on the desktop.
3) Put the file "Beta Test SecondLife-1.17.0.12.VWR-1110.exe" into the same SecondLife folder.
4) Click on the shortcut (you just moved) in the same SecondLife folder
5) Log In
6) Click on File->Upload Image
7) Find an OBJ file made by your modeler
8) Select it
9) If it converted fine, you will see the sculpt map.
10) Select "Sculpted Prim" to preview

Shouldn't that be 32x33? Or at least 64x65, or don't you count the poles?

Until I add support for arbitrary sizes (hint: vote on it! VWR-1110), it accepts the 64x63 mesh. What that looks like is 64 vertexes across minus one overlap, then 64 vertexes down minus one overlap. There is an extra polar vertex leftover that connects the polar faces, which for now works fine just added in default orientation. I'll support those faces with more arbitray orientation next, vote! =)

I'm Trying Cindy

If you want to do an Experiment...
Here is something to play with (for Windows only)): (see Attachment)

How to use :
- Create an Object in your favorite 3D Modeler (only one Object)
- Make sure the UV Map is Without Holes (thats not easy)
- Export to .obj, 'Wavefront Style', with UVs, Triangles only (!)
- drag and drop the .obj File to obj2sculpt (in Windows Explorer)
- Alternative : use the command line like 'obj2sculpt myprettyobject.obj'
- if you get a cryptic error mesage, install .NET 2.0
- you should get a .bmp File, named like myprettyobject.obj.bmp
- use a sculptie previewer, or preview in beta
- flame me, because it sucks (or not ?)

yes, i know, there is more work to be done... :p

UPDATED :
- gives better Results now.
- removed Debug Output (oops) :o
- fixed reading of .obj Files from 3DMAX
- fixed .bmp output, now SL should upload it directly

KNOWN BUGS :
- flipped normals (faces pointing inward) can happen... :(

I have tried to work this every which way and to no luck. The exporter the Onie put together is fine and I commend him for it. Your program repeatedly says something is missing and hasn't produced a .bmp yet.

I work with Wings and been tinkering with Blender. I need to things to complete my wish list and accelerate my building.
I need a exporter the does all the shapes, not just spheres.
Then I need working previewer.

Can anyone help me.. I've made great thrives on creating bowls mugs candle holders and other things. I would be willing to show anyone how it's done in Wings. It took me several 100 of hours myself until I found a fairly easy instructional video.

I can't thank the people like Cindy enough, I haven't tried the in world due to a Back log of building .obj's

Thanks

Is anyone else having issue with it crashing on start?

Both under WINE and on my XP SP2 install, it crashes on start, reporting that it failed to properly initialize.

Any requirements or something I'm missing out on?

Here's what I get when I try running my tree through it.

CODE

527 Vertices
1050 Faces
551 UVs
................................................................................
................................................
0 of 16384 Pixels are BAD.

Unhandled Exception: System.ArgumentException: Value of '-2147483648' is not valid for 'red'. 'red' should be greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 255.
at System.Drawing.Color.CheckByte(Int32 value, String name)
at System.Drawing.Color.FromArgb(Int32 alpha, Int32 red, Int32 green, Int32 blue)
at System.Drawing.Color.FromArgb(Int32 red, Int32 green, Int32 blue)
at obj2sculpt.o2s.Main(String[] args)

I think you need to put checks in to truncate for value ranges. ^.^;

I'm using 3ds max 9 to export my object. It's 1024 verts exactly according to the viewport listing, but most certainly was not created from a single cube, cylinder, or sphere. I'm attaching the object in case you'd like to try getting the converter to work with it. It's named Tree.txt, but it's actually an obj file.

I too would like to be able to unzip the obj2sculpt.zip. But it won't work. Looks like the ZIP file is broken. Any chance to get a working one ?

Here's a version I have but I haven't had too much luck with making a sculptie. The other one does seem corrupted, I can't unzip that one either.

Cindy, can you please find some offsite hosting for this attachment? and link to it rather than uploading it? the shelf life of attachments seems to be only a few weeks before "whatever it is" at Linden Labs, corrupts the attachment (be it image or file).

I've tried to unpack this zip file with both WinRAR and Winzip and they're both giving me errors (file is corrupt, CRC error, etc). I am running Vista...anyone know why this is happening? Is there another way I can get this file?

Here's a working zip, kindly hosted by SL Hungary:

http://slhungary.hu/e107_files/downloads/obj2sculpt.zip

Though from my point of view, this program is not enought flexible for good obj to sculpty converting and has a big failure rate, so I prefer to use Sculpty Maker instead (which has a GUI and some options):
