The trouble with physical objects is that they can be directly interfered with.

That's kind of the point in a robot battle, you'd be trying to push the other person's robot into a hole or something, right?

You can use some physical functions to cause interactions that might not be proper.

You'd definately need a LOT of rules.

I'm off my game currently, but I was something of an expert at tricking out the SL physics engine to do freaky stuff. I might be able to figure out a way to reveal and thus prevent cheating.

A couple rules I highly reccomend are mass limits and no ressing. That means you can only have a gun if the ammo is physically contained and shot out by your robot, and it means that you can't have twenty tons of invisible mass that can smack somebody across a continent like a ragdoll hit by a titanic baseball bat.

I like having the bots compete through some kind of game.

Just getting a ball to a goal is likely to be hard enough for the first gerenation. After that, you could have a tug- or push- war, getting some heavy object over a line, or guiding a ball through a maze around the goal... with or without hazards (like a hole that drops the ball back to the first level, and both goals are on the second level).

Plus, you need to consider remotely controlled versus self-contained bots.

This was my point earlier...
So far everyone's suggestions seem to have focused ont eh RC type...

I am interested in battles and competitions between self contained bots...

What kinds of routines evolve as part of a "Seek and destroy" type of bot...

Or a Builder bot that has to achieve a prim pushing goal on its own...

Or even an automated 'bot that has to navigate a complicated obstacle course to get to a goal...

Each of these types of activities would be tough enough for a RC bot... but an autobot would be a REAL challenge to our abilities in this environment. I just hope the scripts will run under the new restrictions.

I agree completely! I'd like to see both user controlled battles and also autonomous bots, similar to the unmaned vehicle competions they have in the deserts :)

I love the idea though, I think it would be fantastic!

new to the forum and coincidence plays its part across the forums :)

Wiggy Undertone has been working on the scripts, with beta testing and building by Django Yifu and myself for a (not quite as complicated) robot wars clockwork version of cockfighting in New Babbage... wait for it... 'ClockFighting'. We're not quite there yet but its looking good. One of the issues has been a simple user system which allows anyone to build a 'GameClock' (i love the names!) but allows for customisation by the better builders out there. First match should be soon. If i remember i'll post when and where and where to get the scripts when its done :)

Please remember gambling is still illegal in Second Life and we will not brook any bets being taken within earshot of a Linden :p
