See http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4207A previously unannounced change in the server code is being rolled out with server version 1.26.3. It places a limit of 1000 prims on any coallesced object that can be taken into inventory. If you deal with large builds at all, you'll realize that this will make large-scale building virtually IMPOSSIBLE. Please add your votes to the above JIRA to get this change eliminated from the server build, before they destroy the ability to archive or move large and complex builds!

Voted and commented. Thanks for the heads up, Ceera. This has got to be one of the most idiotic ideas LL has ever come up with.
I usually try to stay pretty even-handed when the usual torches and pitchforks get broken out over LL policy decisions. It takes a lot for me to publicly bash them. But this issue has me raging pretty hard over here. In the words of the great man they call Jayne, it's "seriously starting to damage my calm."
Hopefully we can nip this in the bud.
I would strongly suggest upgrading the Jira entry from Major to Showstopper. I believe it's that serious.

One case in point on this. I just finished remodeling a large building for Rutgers University. Their sim is already on this new server. So I can not make an archive copy of their modified building now, because it is over 1500 prims in complexity. And I can't pack it in a rez box because 85% or so of the building belongs to the sim owner's account. So I can't modify and add those pieces to a rez box. Different owners, so the rezzer won't record the locations of the pieces. I'd have to buy the entire structure back from them again, set up the rez box, and then sell it back to them.
Prior to this change, I could have simply selected the whole building, and since it is all full perms and I have mod rights, I could have taken a full copy into inventory.
I opened that JIRA as "Showstopper", because it IS a Showstopper for anyone who builds large-scale projects. A Linden quietly knocked it down to "Major", without comment. (I got an e-mail indicating the priority had been changed.)

Voted! I can't imagine moving a large library/educational build with all of it contents if we had to chop it up into 1000 prim chunks.

Voted. Thanks for the heads up, Ceera. Do the Lindens ever USE SL??
Admittedly, I usually use Builder's Buddy for actual builds. But to move a fully furnished set of buildings, yes, I've used massive coalesced objects. .

From: Nika Talaj Do the Lindens ever USE SL?? Again, I usually refrain from publicly bashing the Lindens, but now that you mention it, stuff like this does make for some eery reminiscence of that great World of Warcraft episode of South Park. "Doesn't anyone at Blizzard have a World of Warcraft account?" "Uh, no. We have lives."

so what exactly happens if you would try to take back more than 1000 prims in one grab?
does it just fail with a blue popup?
or do the prims disappear from the sim but never arrive in anyones inventory?
given the previous track record, the latter would not surprise me at all.

given the previous track record, the latter would not surprise me at all. I haven't dared to try, to be honest. Hopefully it just fails, with an error. But this REALLY needs to get reverted, especially with the forced moves to Ursula coming up. Imagine trying to move a club or a large adult store with this limit still in place! And Nika, no problems with reposting the notice to SLU and other fora. I'm at work right now, and I hardly ever get over to SLU, but they should know there too.

From: Sindy Tsure So.. Er.. They did this because they know how painful the move to ursula is gonna be? And so decided to rub salt in their own lash marks? This limit will make it even harder, if not impossible, for people to move their existing builds from the mainland to Ursula...

given the previous track record, the latter would not surprise me at all. Tested it - you will get a blue popup on the lower right that says "Too many prims selected. Please select 1000 or fewer prims and try again" The build did not disappear.

From: Sindy Tsure So.. Er.. They did this because they know how painful the move to ursula is gonna be? Probably. And I'm not being ironic here. They said there would be work to "fix" the large coalesced object problem before the Ursula roll-out. I can EASILY see this as being their solution.

According to Prospero, they will NOT roll back 1.26.3, but will consider adjusting the limits in 1.26.4. But we WILL get saddled with a limit of some sort.

As much as a hate to admit it, Argent is probably right. Andrew was talking about some nasty problems with big coalesced objects months ago. If it's a choice between having SL eat the object, which happened to me recently, or having to split it into 1000 prim chunks, I guess I'll take the later. Of course, the real preference would be to have it work correctly in the first place..

1000 prims is WAY too low. I can quite easily take and rez 5000 prims, in any sim that has enough prims free on the parcel, and that they haven't already rolled this neutered server software to. At the very least, it needs to be increased to 2500 or so.
