Gaps Between Prims

Something I have discovered while building, sometimes, even using the snap to grid, when rotating a prim let's say 90 degrees, it ends up on 89.95

Check the rotations to see if that causes the seem.

I agree with Larrie and we have had this conversation before. The viewer only shows the first 3 digits of the prims position and you cannot know the actual position and change the prim unless you hack the viewer or use a script.

I use this little script for problem prims:

CODE

// Put this script in a prim and touch it, the description will then contain the
// prims position. To make an adjustment, change the position vector
// in the description and then uncomment the llSetPos line below.

default
{
touch_start(integer total_number)
{
// llSetPos((vector)llGetObjectDesc());

vector position = llGetPos();
llOwnerSay((string)position);
}
}

You will see after experimenting that even if you make adjustments to the maximum precision allowed, the prim will be placed where the sim (I guess) calculates it to be, not you. You can play with the positions and sometimes get a problem prim to finally go to the position you want by moving it off maybe 0.01 and then repositioning it with the script. I don't know why that happens, but sometimes you just have to work with it.

This problem can be further compounded it the prim's size is a little off beyond those first 3 digits.

I usually build by the numbers, and then if there is a problem prim, use the script above to see what is going on and if possible, zoom in as much as possible on the prim and make visual adjustments. Visual adjustments at full zoom also allow adjustments beyond the first 3 digits.

Skidz Prims... LOL.

Use the built in tools. They are all you need. The first time i ever heard of Skidz Prims and then saw it, I fell out of my chair laughing.

People actually PAY for that.

No, i am by far not the best builder and if you go look at my furniture you will see LOTS of mathematical incongruities and things - oh well, I am human, not a mathematical number cruncher. I'd rather have misaligned prims that have someone see me using Skidz Prims. LOL.

There have been plenty of ways to avoid misaligned prims given here. They still occur but I am not so anal as to give a damn since most people NEVER zoom in on prim seams and the finer details that people go through tremendous effort to build into their products.

Skidz Prims... LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

omg i cannot believe you have admitted to this! you create so much work for me because of this disregard for prim alignment >:o(
im going to either buy you a skidz prims or teach you how to use a calculator.

its a building-aid hud. it does things like allow you to evenly space an odd number of prims, set flush prims of differing thicknesses, etc.

the four digit hack isnt so good.
i have found that for a .0001 alteration to 'stick' i have to actually adjust it by .0011 then immediately go .0010 in the opposite direction. a single change of .0001 doesnt actually happen even though the viewer will claim that it has.

Really?

I do, as it makes a huge difference to me. I don't know about "most", but I know quite a few other people who do as well.

I think it makes a lot of difference to the people who typically post to this forum -- people who emphasize design professionally or at least are attracted to design as talented amateurs. I think Briana is almost certainly right, though, that most people in SL or RL never notice and couldn't care less about details like this. It's sort of like discussing the "right" wine to have with dinner. A real oenophile can explain in gory detail about how the age, type of grape, and nuances of the fermentation process make one wine perfect for a given meal. The rest of us say, "Wine? You want red or white? I think I still have some Ripple in the back of the fridge.";)

Most people see the build and judge the build by what they see based on casual perusal. Rarely do they zoom inbetween the walls, zoom in on prims, look for seams etc...

I make a habit of knowing the entire area around me - between the walls, under the floor, 200m+ in the sky -everything- I figure i have a 3rd eye (the cam) so why not use it.

I cannot recall ever examining casual builds for seams and such. I can think back to all the amazing places i have seen in 2008 and never once did i zoom around LOOKING for seams to be showing or misaligned prims.

However, when i do arrive at a build and these things are obviously visible at first look, then i will look for more discrepancies.

Not sure if you know Nina but its also very easy to change the default increment settings. By default they go up or down in increments of .010 if I remember rightly it might be higher. You can change that to what ever you like but its slow to move the lower you go but accuarate when you need it.

Edit; I am assuming this as I have not taken the increments so low before and use another method, I will try later and see if the numbers still bounce around which is what you are bascially experiencing with what you posted.

I have checked the maximum increments that can be used for movement and it is;

0.000001

I have tested this and the numbers are consistent with no bouncing around but are not moving in increments of 0.000001.

On the X-co-ord @ 148.0000000 it moves every 0.0000153
On Y and Z co-ord both at 190.0000000 it moves at 0.0000015 which is much more accurate than the X co-ord.

It does apear that the number of increments will vary according to what part of the sim you are building on.
