Suprise - turns out its fairly easy to point the new mozilla-based help browser thingy to another URL. The Screenshoot shows google.com running in the new help browser. I will see if I can hack up an iframe or ajax-based browser with an adressbar so one can actually enter urls into it directly.

Did you use hexedit to change the url? I tried using Notepad, but poor the thing couldn't handle it.

yes I did use a hexeditor - I doubt notepad would qualify as that ;)
Here is a new screenshoot of the improved browser thingy.

You see, our experts describe you as an appallingly dull fellow, unimaginative, timid, lacking in initiative, spineless, easily dominated, no sense of humour, tedious company and irrepressibly drab and awful. And whereas in most professions these would be considerable drawbacks, in chartered accountancy they are a positive boon.

hehe - imagine RuneScape Inside of SL :D
Anyway Here is my final screenshot showing a frameset based address bar. It is getting late here so I am attaching the webpage source that adds the bar to this post for everybody to play with. Both iframe and frameset addressbars need php to work - it should be possible to generate the same effect with Javascvript, tho.

I think LL just got pwned for not releasing the browser for general use. :) I was waiting for that to happen, following the instructions on how to mod the Help file that was out last week.

Isn't quite an iframe address bar, but simplicity above all...

Feel free to use :D

This might prove useful...

Had it bookmarked from a few months ago. I knew it would come in handy for something, just wasn't sure what at the time!

A little Linden birdy told us we where doing it the really hardway. Because it turns out to be real simple to change the homepage of the F1 help browser.
Open: c:\Documents and Settings\WindowsUserName\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.ini
and add: HtmlHelpHomePage http://www.google.com/
Or any other website.
Our mucking in the exe did help us find the proper name of the setting, so not all was pointless. :)

Thanks Chandra Page for the quick thinking.

This is totally cool. Thank You Velox for use of the redirection page. I've commented to live journals and emailed an attachment from inworld so far. Next patch will have an address bar you think?

GOOGLE offers redirection
05-31-2006 17:28
GOOGLE will offer to redirect you to the URL you entered as a search term, if GOOGLE finds no result for your URL search. :)

SL's browser seems unable to display FLASH until I copy my FIREFOX plugins directory to the SL browser's plugins directory. Then I can display FLASH movies, just not intreract with them.

As for JAVA, I've been able to hear the sound from JAVA games, and I can tell that I'm interacting with the game, but I see no video yet.

The browser is unable to open multiple windows and doesnt want to display https pages.

That didn't take long....

These are some URLs I've been using to test that work quite nicely and might give you a feel for what sort of things we could use the embedded browser for.

(Obligatory disclaimer: You really shouldn't be doing this and I'm not responsible for anything bad that happens if you mess with your settings files and use these URLs...)

Very nice. Well done :) *adds on to it*

Would you mind if I used this as a basis for the "next page" of my portal? Simple iframe, but it looks great :)

Google in SL on a Mac
05-31-2006 22:23
Here's how to get google.com in the help browser on a Mac:
  1. Quit SL
  2. Open <homedir>/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/user_settings/settings.ini
  3. Add or change the line: "HtmlHelpHomePage http://www.google.com/"
  4. Save settings.ini
  5. Open Second Life, open HTML Help, and hit "Home"
(or whatever URL you want)
Unfortunately, I'm unable to type in text fields on any web page. Same for a few other Mac users I know.
