There's a Jira feature request to create a new inexpensive light-use sim, to replace the OpenSpace product that isn't working for LL. Jack Linden's own statement in his feedback thread (see below) seems to indicate that LL might be open to consider creating a new type of sim. ... as Jack points out below, enforcement requires some software.

"SL needs cheap, *real* open spaces"

Since Jira can be unfriendly, here's quick instructions on voting:

If the feature set in SVC-3337 isn't exactly what you think it should be, I suggest you still vote for it and add a comment with your ideas.
From: Jack Linden
Some people have suggested a technical throttle, a hard limit on scripts, avatars and so on. We've certainly discussed that and will continue to do so as we think about how to address very specific needs. It could be that with the right technical restrictions in place that a truly light use product at lower cost is viable.
There is time before January to twist the software group's arms and get a new sim product ready for announcement, if not rollout. Also, perhaps consideration should be given to a smooth migration path from current OS's to the new product.

Ack! /me hates JIRA for discussions.. I added a comment there pointing back to this thread.

This would be an easier topic if Jack threw us some data behind the reasons for this action. Like, does people TPing in and out of the sim cause way more load than people just hanging around? I know it causes _more_ but don't know how much more.

Just a few more thoughts. I think LL is both right and wrong with what they're doing with openspaces. They're right in that there really is a need for a "quarter sim" product, this satisfies a market that ought to be satisfied, so a "lightweight sim" at less than half the cost of a normal sim is a good idea.

Where they've gone wrong is, they've hijacked OpenSpaces to implement it, destroying the other market they need to satisfy and haven't yet. There's ALSO a need for a true open space sim, a market for which even the original Openspaces at 1875 prims was overkill. The original Openspaces were too beefy and too pricey to really satisfy this market, and then they went and made them even beefier, turning them into light-weight sims but completely removing the only product that even came close to satisfying the need for a true open space sim.

They need to split this into two products. Keep the existing, beefed up "sim-lite" as is, with 3750 prims and the new pricing. But give us some real open spaces! 512 prims is more than enough for a real open space sim! 16 active objects is more than enough! THAT'S what I want. Ridiculously low usage sim for a ridiculously low price. :) I just want some sea to sail in and some open skies for flying in. Openspaces, in their original incarnation, were too beefy and too expensive to satisfy this need, and they've only gotten worse. We need something better...
