From: Aja Gold well actually..he overpaid for the sim...he ordered the island from a third party and he pays just as much as me for the other hallf...so basically he did get ripped off for the price....we discussed this last night and he showed me his statements...it was a learning experience..but he was a newbie when he orderd the island..so now we are discussing what to do with the island....i am sure we both will take abig loss as it was overpriced to begin with... and i honestly did not know i was not suppose to have a skybox club and a small mall on it..but i was naive in not doing enough research...he has a club on his half of the island and that is all that is on the entire sim...nothing more...when he purchased the island he was told it was for residential and commericial use..but anyway...i need to decide what i am going to do now. thanks for all of your suggestions.. Suggestion. Dump the OS, its simply NOT worth what you will be paying for it once the Linden's jacked up prices start. For what you and your brother are paying, either rent or buy a private island, or (shudder) even a region of "mainland". You will be saving by getting more bang for your buck. Right now those who've converted 4OS into single regular islands may be looking for renters / buyers. Or upgrade your OS to a full regular island. If your brother isn't willing, ask if he'll buy you out. Then see if you can rent/buy half a regular island for a reasonable amount. Lots of people right now exploring alternatives to SL because of the OS situation. mcx

People can own OS islands without owning a regular full prim island? I thought regardless who was paying for the OS they were always tied to the original estate as far as actual ownership was concerned. LL let people own just the OS?

Most likely a regular island owner sold them the OS. You do have to own a regular island or full region mainland before being able to buy OS direct from L.L. -- Many people "bought" OS once removed. The OS when sold in the Big Sale did not have to have any physical connection to the base land though. Bliss

So the people that "bought" these OS from the estate owners can upgrade these OS sims on their own? Or does the original estate owner have to do it for them?

You can't upgrade or "own" an open space or Homestead unless you also own a full prim sim. At least not at the moment.

Then I do not think the OP understands this.

For 28kL$ a month you can also get a 1/4th of a regular sim with 3750prims. Average OS prices an estate owner asks before this whole issue for a full OS with estate manager rights were somewhere between 25 and 35k.
if your brother is estate owner, he pays LL 75US at the moment a month. wich is (sorry to say...) 20kL$ a month for the whole OS.
As for the homestead: light commercial use is allowed on the new homestead. A club unfortunatly is not light commercial use.
Good luck.

Good luck. I think Linden Labs is trying to herd all the dispossessed people from Open Spaces to the Mainland, and it's just not going to work. The whole reason people didn't stick with cheaper mainland in the first place is because they didn't want to be there. I don't blame them. The mainland from what I've seen lately is bloody awful. I went looking after this whole OS huge tier increase of 67 percent happened. I own a regular island but I do not doubt Linden Labs will try to pull something similar on the other private land owners. Well I looked and nothing in Main Land was remotely attractive. Lag. mishmash builds and abandoned junk. The more open areas are awful sleety ugly terrain that will take a buttload of prim to "terraform" --- Basically nothing was favorable about the mainland aside from it being "cheap" which is only in relative terms to the jacked up prices LL is demanding for islands and OS. The one thing that might make mainland more attractive is if SL gives private island estate tools to people who own a region or more of space. Last week at the request of my island's residents I layered snow textures on my private island, which is now a delicious winter wonderland. Come spring we will bounce into a flourishing of new green. I understand that in mainland you are STUCK with the ground textures already there, and you have to lay out prim by the gazillion to do proper terraforming. If my SL private island becomes tier priced beyond reasonable means the way OS are, I'm not going to the mainland, I'm going to some other grid entirely. I just don't like being majorly screwed with. I don't think Linden Labs has taken the fact that the economy is sensitive enough now that people who were the ones spending lots of money in SL on land and in shopping will consider changing the bulk of their spending habits to pouring their money outside of SL entirely. I can't believe anyone would want a Homestead when you are paying so much more for so much less. I'm sure there will be a few who try to make it work, but only if they do not realize the full extent of how badly they are getting ripped off. Bliss
