Having a sense of what is happening can be helpful, so thanks FJ. Obviously mark me in the "Please sort this out for everyone as soon as possible category".
A side thought.
I lease a new car - I make the monthly lease payments. I pay the insurance, maintenance, repair, license fees etc. I also pay for my gas when I use it.
I let 3 friends use the car and they pay for their gas when they use it.
On Saturday all 4 of us want to use the car...
I say "I pay for the car so I should get to use it first". The 3 others say 'But I also pay for it - it is elitest for you to say you should get first priority use."
Sound familiar?

From: DPB Yakan Sound familiar? You've been around long enough to know that content creators don't need to be premium or even payment-info-on-file. You want those people to get shut out when SL starts going all weird? Or you want to allow people in who plugged a prepaid U$5 credit card into the payment system?

As a content creator I'd rather have people in-world who have money to buy my stuff.

OK, how about this: * Payment info used, or * Concierge access, or * Enough L$ in their account to buy my most expensive product. What? Did I say that one out loud?

Again, thanks for all of the feedback. I really believe we are on the right track with our infrastructure, but also know that this system is one of the most complicated I've ever encountered. I've tried to segment our problems (as outlined in previous blogs) and we are already within 30 days of some real positives (finally doing way with VPN's, and diversifying our network transit providers through LLnet). We've also made real progress on asset systems and continue to work through our data messaging service to be more reliable. In other words, we have great momentum on many infrastructure fronts. Databases (and especially our reliance on a large central database) is a much more difficult problem to correct in the short term.
MySQL, Oracle, IBM, PostgreSQL, there are many options. I promise you all of them are being evaluated, but my immediate focus is to get this platform stable with what we have in place now. In parallel, we have a team that is looking at the long term solution, and if it makes good technical sense to go in a different direction, then we move in that direction. I am just convinced that we have code that is not properly optimized and we have not paid enough attention to how we structure queries and access our central database. We are feeling this pain right now (believe me, I'm feeling the pain as well!).
We have a number of activities that we are implementing this week to get us through our next peak usage time, and will continue to fine tune the database to give us acceptable performance and the SL experience you demand (and should receive).
You also have my commitment to continue communicating and responding to questions, and so appreciate your patience and commitment to SL!

The last time I had to reinstall Linux was when I got my laptop back from the shop, and only because they decided to re-image my hard drive after replacing a faulty video chip. :/

I'm trying to balance the quality of service offered by SL, and the coming price increases. I am having an increasingly difficult time in justifying those increases for this degradation in service.

I'm certain the "all hands on deck" thing is over and all the legit resources have left the building.
Here is a clue for you: You can't go home. This is an entertainment business. It is 24*7. If you can't handle it then quit now. walk away. Let someone that knows what they are doing take your job.
yea that is right. the weekend is here. And Second Life is borked. And there is not one person on the clock at LL that cares.
One weekend is how long the concern lasted.
Good job.

It HAS to be in the interests of LL to get this issue sorted, as nearly all accounts, in one way or another (before Premuim account holders jump up and say ME ME), add to the economy. By restricting logins, they are restricting their own cachflow from within the economy. Ultimately, if they frustrate enough Premium Account holders, then that income will also reduce.
80k ppls online?.... when it's like that, I open the map, and zoom/scroll around... even taking simple averages across areas of green dots, allowing 20% for map updates and those in TP status, I can never reckon more than 10k at most. Where are they all hiding? More LL stats?
Whilst I admire the tenacity of the ilks of FJ for all their hard work, they must feel like they have been invited to put out a fire, that has been raging unattended, for some years. Looking at the many forecasts published about the growth rate, it has to have been predictable to some extent, that this time would come. So my real frustration is.... what's taken you so long to do something about it?

Sorry FJ. I know you probably will not read this or will have started another forum thread elsewhere so we can't see follow up to the issues, but hey I might as well put this somewhere. I know you are trying your best to get this database issue sorted, but now with your option to have reduced service as opposed to complete failure. The database is now so painfully sluggish at times, with no explanation, and no idea of which elements of the database are being curtailed. This to me is a definite step backwards. We know there are problems, but we no longer know how severe. All we know is everyday life here on SL is slowly grinding to a halt, or at best totally haphazard as to which parts of the database are working or not, and to try and conduct commerce, building or scripting is becoming so fraught as to becoming not even worth trying. From a disgruntled user, who has now gone basic until you start to deal with the issues properly.
