So the solution would be to make it stop launching your external browser to handle these addresses as they're not website addresses. How to make it stop launching it though, I'm not sure on right now. Firefox uses Second Life as the "helper application" for secondlife:// URLs, so visiting them in Firefox should bring up Secondlife. That's how the "teleport now" button on the slurl map works, and if secondlife:// URLs don't work then that won't work either. _____________________

Wow!
All you other Lindens, take note of this thread. Three great things happened here: 1. Philip tackled a longstanding problem and made real progress in short order. 2. He communicated with the Residents clearly, without evasions or corporate doubletalk. 3. The Residents responded with helpful feedback, *and Philip clearly indicated that the feedback had been received and was being listened to*. The new map capabilities are great...but the REAL achievement is this thread itself. THIS is how a company and its customers should communicate!! _____________________

I think they need to spend a little more time at the beach so they know what water actualy looks like.
Windlight water reflections are great, but Runitai's water acted a lot more like actual water. _____________________

Wishes to map..

Show Protectet Linden better, (and mark it better inland wiht fx bouys and stuff)
Show Banlines.... Or even better ban them total and make Orbs only allowed inside buildngs, in resonable way... ' Thats the main problems. SL is not exspired the right size seen on a map, Its done by flying, driving, saling and so on. I do hope you also come around this way,. Els I will promise to give you a flight tour ( If banlines´, sim cross and lag ellers does it posibel) ![]() Many miss the feeling of size by just a clikc and TP round or use Landmarks, the real size and greatness in SL come by travel it tru and exspiriens it. Naaaahh, let's keep em work 24/7, only water and bread... Maybe beach on Sunday LOL. Dunno about salaries yet ![]() That said, I see great things happening if Philip indeed sources his geniousity 24/7 with his whole team, and... listening to their customers.... Keep monitoring the prios though. _____________________

Heya engineering team this ROCKS!!! I have been building a mini-continent for 3 years now and am glad that there is a way to finally properly leverage that connectivity!
Techie question: I have noticed that terrain textures vary from actual, sometimes, on the map. Usually having to do with altitude variance. Is all that stuff recalculated or reprocessed differently for the map? Not a big deal, it's close enough ![]() Philip very glad to see you haven't burned out. I was almost sure you were headed for permanent surf-safari and barbeques after all the stuff going down last year. _____________________

Yes, the new map is cool. But it breaks this script.
Just like merging SLX has some (minor) benefits. But closing OnRez is not. [pre] [lsl] string URL = "http://www.subnova.com/secondlife/api/map.php?sim="; default { on_rez(integer ignored) { llHTTPRequest(URL + llEscapeURL(llGetRegionName()), [], "" ![]() } http_response(key request_id, integer status, list metadata, string body) { llSetTexture(body, ALL_SIDES); } } [/lsl] [/pre] |

I am using the new APi, it is nice and works very fine with Firefox but....
With IE that is catstrophic !!! First, using last version of scriptaculous.js send a script error on loading. I'd have to go to the archived version, I know it is not an SL library and you are indicating the version to use, I thought the last one was the best.... When zooming markers are not following , they are staying at the same place in the <div> and an error is returned (in a french OS error is : "cet objet ne gère pas cette action" ![]() When scrolling, after a time, refresh is random and partial, some regions are recovering others, it's a mess. With old API, I didn't have these problems. Maybe you should say in the WebMap API it is optimized for Firefox ![]() |

Continents and their names
01-23-2009 13:52
Hi Phillip. Are there official names for each continent on the grid. Official names for non-mainland region groups or cratons are determined by their estate owners. Does Linden Lab have names for all the mainland continents?
I noticed what appears to be a continent to the east of Corsica, and what seems to be a partial continent to the north of Corsica. Do these have names yet? Thank you. |

How often does the map image update?
01-23-2009 14:09
What is it? About once a month? Its like a postcard from the past every time I check the map and see builds that have been long gone.

Are there any plans to develop a WMS or WFS service so that the map can be integrated [easily] into other software like openlayers, mapserver, autodesk/mapguide, or esri?
I would love to see the entire mapping platform (parcels, events, etc) moved into an openly accessible system that people could add onto and develop without needing a ton of hacks just to make the thing barely usable. |

They're not there yet and it's not just due to garbage collection but this is a vast improvement. They deserve some praise even if it's only a month out of date, that's a vast improvement in itself. |

I've actually been waiting for some of these updates for over a year. And I'm actually a bit put off that the people on the SLDev list who volunteered to provide suggestions and input on updating the Webmap API were not consulted at all. There was one meeting and then Nothing at all until the announcement today.
It's a nice improvement over the old tiles. But it still isn't close to what it could have been. I'm rather disappointed in the continued reliance on the Google Maps API for one thing. |

Firefox uses Second Life as the "helper application" for secondlife:// URLs, so visiting them in Firefox should bring up Secondlife. That's how the "teleport now" button on the slurl map works, and if secondlife:// URLs don't work then that won't work either. That's what I do -- I go to the map -- click teleport now and that's the error I get. ![]() I'm going to try an uninstall reinstall one more time. |

But this is what Lex was concerned about, if support for in-world textures is not continued, this will eventually break. _____________________

The Wiki does not explain how we can get a the link to a single sim map from a LSL script... It would help as it is a tedious work to reverse engineer the javascript code in order to get the equivalent algorithm implemented in LSL... I did it in the past for the old map API, but it does not seem to be working any more with the new API (did the region coordinates in the SL grid change in the new API ?), and I'm not particularly fond of loosing time redoing the whole shebang when the info is probably available at LL, thus reinventing the wheel...
For info, here was the code I used with the old API: ShowMap(key id) { string url = "http://secondlife.com/apps/mapapi/grid/map_image/"; vector sim_coord = llGetRegionCorner(); sim_coord.x = sim_coord.x / 256.0; sim_coord.y = 1279 - sim_coord.y / 256.0; url += (string)((integer)sim_coord.x) + "-" + (string)((integer)sim_coord.y); url += "-1-0.html"; llLoadURL(id, "View the sim map", url); } And here was the code I tried in vain: ShowMap(key id) { string url = "http://map.secondlife.com.s3.amazonaws.com/1/"; vector sim_coord = llGetRegionCorner(); sim_coord.x = sim_coord.x / 256.0; sim_coord.y = 1279 - sim_coord.y / 256.0; string x = (string)((integer)sim_coord.x); string y = (string)((integer)sim_coord.y); string x0 = llStringTrim(llGetSubString(" 00000", 0, 5 - llStringLength(x)), STRING_TRIM_HEAD) + x; string y0 = llStringTrim(llGetSubString(" 00000", 0, 5 - llStringLength(y)), STRING_TRIM_HEAD) + y; url += x0 + "/" + y0 + "/" + "map-1-" + x + "-" + y + "-objects.jpg"; llLoadURL(id, "View the sim map", url); } |
