Is there some sensible reason why Mark didn't use "Mark" instead of "M" ? Was he trying to avoid being searchible in crippled search engines like this forum has?
Is it the old blog post this thread is for or is there supposed to be a new one? _____________________

Good post.
Part of that first hour experience needs to include looking at the welcome areas. Some of them are a big turn off to new members. No easy answer to that one, though. _____________________

Good post. Part of that first hour experience needs to include looking at the welcome areas. Some of them are a big turn off to new members. No easy answer to that one, though. Now, the gestures are usually from the most obscene movie scenes possible, and typed chat has gone the way of voice where people are more freely saying "F*** this", "F*** that", and "F*** you". At least H4 did away with the Brash pusher attachments, but, it's still getting lamer and lamer all the time. (>_< ![]() Add to that, most of the Mentors I see in welcome areas won't go on voice chat (myself included (T_T) ) and many noobies aren't even aware of typed chat. (>_< ![]() _____________________

Glad to hear you're making progress..keep it up.
Just 2 questions for you What is being done about the viewers eating our RAM and eventually causing us to crash? Will we ever be able to have more that 40 people in one place without being bogged down in Lag Hell? look forward to your replies ![]() |

Good blog, M!
Couple things.. 1, any chance Burning Life could be open for more than a week? 22 regions is a LOT to explore.. 2, please poke whoever is in charge of SLURL to get the map updated. It's over a year out of date - 1/2 the mainland doesn't even show on it. This may seem like a trivial issue but if I wasn't already a resident and a friend said "check out this Magellan Linden wreckage!" with this link... http://slurl.com/secondlife/squall/// ...I'd be a little confused (and pretty unimpressed) at the totally blank map. Squall is on the mainland and there's another whole continent just to the West of it - none of it shows up. Welcome T Linden! _____________________

Things have been a lot better lately. I've been able to get work done on a regular basis... for a while, it was really quite painful. Keep things moving in the right direction, and more businesses won't be so afraid to innovate using the SL platform!

QFT.... Its strange that the lab cant control WA's when there are groups in SL that have controled there helping new rezzies area for years and they haven't degraded to where LL's WA are now. The user groups have people on scene or easily available to quickly deal with trouble-making. Linden Lab doesn't. User groups aren't paying the people who do the enforcing, LL would be. User groups can kick people out with no concern over possibly losing that person's potential future income stream; to LL, a user's potential future income stream is the only thing that matters about them. User groups have a narrow focus, a small part of SL to patrol, only their own parcels; LL has every bit of mainland to deal with. LL's never used banning individuals from parcels as a disciplinary method, probably because there's no way implemented to have a list of bannee's that would hold thousands of names. _____________________

Some Extra Thoughts For Further Improvements
09-29-2008 12:36
Yes there have been improvements, I agree, but we must keep pushing forward. Following issues I find also a thought worth it ;
*banlines I love to fly around in my planes or helis and find it very frustrating to hit banlines on the mainland solution : banlines should be as a box with a maximum height of +/- 75 meters (that would allow pilots to pass along the whole mainland without being crushed to walls ![]() *new residents (maximum 14 days exploring time) why dont you force people to go for premium after 14 days ? I am fed up with people begging for money (lindens) and when you do a commercial action, you see all the 'money wolfs' jumping on free money instead than exploring a sim (despite the fact that so many people really do their best to make the grid look fantastic) *allow rl children in sl (only IF accompagnied by there rl parents) this is a good one, I am in rl many times away from home for business trips, I own a 1/2 mainland sim, it would be fantastic if I could meet my daughter in sl while being away from my RL home, she would love it. As long if parents own properties it would be an idea that they could let there kids in (under parental control), there is more shit happening in rl than in sl anyhow ! I only see benefits in this and it would boost the grid again thats all for now, hope to get a positive reply ;o) keep the good work up M and TEAM ! xxx Wildcat |

General access-only ban lines stop 50m above ground. Above that, you can fly around all you want - it's only when you have been explicitly banned by name that you can't fly over the land. *new residents (maximum 14 days exploring time) why dont you force people to go for premium after 14 days ? I am fed up with people begging for money (lindens) and when you do a commercial action, you see all the 'money wolfs' jumping on free money instead than exploring a sim (despite the fact that so many people really do their best to make the grid look fantastic) Unless you want the extra support offered to premium/concierge residents or you want to a own chunk of the mainland (which is only 1/6th or so of the grid) you don't need to be premium. Forcing _everybody_ to be premium would be a big hit to private estates! *allow rl children in sl (only IF accompagnied by there rl parents) /me won't touch one that with a 10m prim! _____________________

what have I been focused on? Leading the company’s efforts to make Second Life more relevant, more usable and more reliable. Relevant to what? What is he trying to say using the word relevant? we kicked off a project to reinvent what we call the “first hour experience” (our web experience, the viewer, and the way we acclimate and acculturate users inworld) for new users. We’ve made great progress and will be working with an award-winning interactive design firm to help us complete the reinvention and bring it to life. Which " award-winning interactive design firm "? Given the numerous abominations of interfaces and website designs touted as samples of good design this is somewhat disturbing. It's nice to see progress in localizing the interface for different languages but it would be nicer still to see at least some discussion of problems stemming from multiple languages such as not being able to read the names of anything in your inventory because they are all named and described only in one language. Some virtual world needs to figure out how to make multi-lingual fields for texture names, sound names, etc. Suppose I speak only Chinese and use a Chinese interface version - the folder where my textures are may be labeled with the Chinese characters that mean "Textures", but the names of the textures will all be in English. Multi-lingual name fields and description fields would be one way to deal with this, embedded machine translation would be another. Also for dealing with a multi-lingual userbase, embedded machine translation for the chat, such as one can see at meglobe.com, would be good. Why does the new guy Tom Hale have to be T Linden instead of Tom Linden? Do they think single letter names are cool? Should we refer to him as Mr T? I think I might start a Jira issue suggesting forbidding Lindens from using single letter first names unless their real first name consists of only a single letter. Also, M Linden capitalizes Summer when it should just be summer, and I don't think there's any good reason to capitalize "northern hemisphere", either. He's writing, not making labels for a map. In addition, in the phrase "This is all part of our commitment ensure", there should be the word "to" in between "comment" and the word "ensure". I think if I was the CEO of a big company I'd get someone to proofread my writing before I put it out for the world to see. Not a bad post though, it was reasonably clear and concise, not filled with cutesy jargon and made-up words. _____________________

Bots
09-29-2008 13:09
Hi M,
Thanks for the blog post. I would like to say that I hope you are working toward fixing the bot problems created by the way traffic is recorded. 25 campers or 25 alts in a skybox over a mainland store does a lot to help you reach 71,232 concurrency but it really doesn't do much for the average resident's experience. If it were up to me I would say develop an auto-log off after X number of idle minutes that can't be overided... although I'm sure there are some viable reason for people to have bots. I just don't think traffic is a viable reason. |

land extortionists ?

M , you mentioned ad farms being banned. thank $DEITY
Jack seemed to side step the issue of land cutters, then his a.d.d. kicked in 'cause he's been awol from the 'adfarmer' thread for days now. (oooo shiney) anything going to be done about people using small plots to torment neighbors into buying them out at inflated prices? |

Bots 2
09-29-2008 13:19
The inworld stats won't have real meaning until the bots are separated out and counted.
Why are people still camping? I thought it didn't help with traffic anymore? They are so annoying. Otherwise, woot! I like how its going. _____________________

User groups have a narrow focus, a small part of SL to patrol, only their own parcels; LL has every bit of mainland to deal with. We understand all this, or hope we do, yet LL keeps the WA's there and does nothing to correct the mistake other than adding more WA's. Why not close them up or limit age of people there? There's been many solutions offered in the past. Now what I have seen over the years is LL embraces automation but fails to realize at times that you cant automate the human race. _____________________
