I'm going to post again about MakeHuman (opensource parameterized human modeler), since plenty of people actually seem to care about the Mesh (thought I was rather alone).

So yeah, consider MakeHuman's help, consultation, whatever. I don't know what they'll say, but it's worth a shot. At least for guidance on how to make a good mesh, because seriously, the SL mesh is...so...bad.

If they used makehuman that would be amazing. If they also used facegen along side makehuman, that be even more amazing.

edit: Scratch that idea. I just found out makehuman already has the ability to edit your entire head.

Something I left out from the list in my previous post - the way aspect ratio is handled in SL . . .Why not reduce the number and then when taking snapshots, add a selector for the use of the snapshot (profile, about land etc) so that people don't need to consult the wiki to do something that should Just Work without making a mockery of their face, their friends, their products or their favorite locations.

Absolutely and thanks for posting.

Search Improvement
12-08-2008 08:10
From: What we brainstormed was a yelp like widget, a database of locations, stores, events, that you could submit and add descriptions, ratings and tags to. Anyone can tag content. You could search via tag, location, description, location. You could search by multiple keywords and use excludes. . The current one sucks.[/QUOTE

I agree completely. Welcome Howard Linden to our dementia.

SL Viewer as a home page
12-08-2008 09:59
From: - Draw the movable UI widgets to the screen with a different mechanism such that they can be moved outside the main viewer window, to a second monitor for example.[/QUOTE

Have a home page that the in world viewer is just another widget. Sometimes I run SL as a tiny window and if you could pull these widgets out and scatter around your screen it would be far better than enlarging the screen just to close an SL widget. I guess like a desktop with tools scattered around to work within the viewer.
I agree with this suggestion.

Aquarius Paravane is right on the money with the snapshots and different aspect ratios fiasco. This has always been a major annoyance. Considering that the pictures are stored internally as jp2 with power of 2 sizes this is even more ridiculous. At least make the square ones 128 x 128. The rectangular ones should all have the same format on the screen, either make them all 4:3 or 16:9, internally 512 or 256 would be good.
Of course there is an motive behind this madness.. the L$10 upload fee. If your a perfectionist you will snapshot to disk then edit the pictures in Photoshop and upload each in the right size to look perfect. So there's no incentive for LL to fix this bug/money making feature.

This is even worse, as the same image appears with different aspect ratios in different windows. This is the case for the groups insignas, which appear square in the group profiles, and rectangular in the group search... No mean for us to fix it, even with paying fees.

Here is something that pertains directly to the UI. We used to be able to mute people/objects easily by finding them through the chat history but that was changed with the big revamp to the UI. Now, unless you can see the object, you cannot mute it unless you know who owns it or where it is. We need to make it easy to mute people again by pulling up the recent chatters, objects and people, and muting them.

An example of the OLD BUGS RETURNING I mentioned
12-12-2008 10:30
22RC3 has a blast from the past bug once more. Something that was fixed, now is broken again and for no good reason.

I speak of the "Hair in Butt" problem, which manifests itself sometimes after teleporting. This bug was fixed about a year ago - now it is back. Please, whatever method you are using for version control, set it on fire and stomp on the ashes, then replace it. I suggest enforcing a strict policy of source code coming ONLY from the current version being worked on in a server. I'm almost certain that every programmer there has a dozen folders with old routines in it, and they are dropping in old buggy stuff they can quickly find rather than using the debugged and working version that is in the CURRENTWORKING shared directory. Make it clear that any programmer who uses any source code outside that directory will join the legions of unemployed people on the outside. It only takes one routine with a fault to ruin a good program.

This problem of bugs reappearing after they've been fixed is getting very, very old.

<snip>

The problem may never have been fixed in the first place.

I think WorkingOnIt Linden (or one of the other Lindens) said a while ago changing one thing, can change something else (butterfly effect?). They may have thought they caught the problem when in fact that only fixed one part of it. Now they have changed something else it has manifested again.

As far as I remember, someone said they are restructuring the entire program to make it more modular, and to hopefully make problems like this a thing of the past. Not sure how far they have got with it though.

My memory is really fuzzy on this though. It was several month ago, when I heard it.

WOW! All of this is really good news. Frank's work especially gives me real confidence that there is a bright future ahead. M's focus points are all valid and realistic. I'm very very happy to see these initiatives.

Thank you, M, Frank and all the team at LL for responding to your community in ways that matter the most!

Inventory Drama!
12-16-2008 05:24
Hello Howard!! Enhance inventory management pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase!

It would definitely be nice to be able to click on the item in the inventory and be able to see what it looks like (something like a thumbnail system) without dragging it out of the inventory or going through the mess of changing your look if it is a clothes item.

Also, please change the way we unpack things. Perhaps an additional feature in the inventory menu would be to unpack without dragging the item in-world.

Btw, I agree with the comments before mine about having our own tabbed system for searches and to enhance search criteria.

All the best! Hope you become a SL UI Hero :D

yes somebody said this recently:

From: Inara Pey
...Perhaps the only interesting element in Kingdon's comment (which I admittedly left from the above) is "... and modularizing the code base ...". Dusan Writer has already highlighted the possible gem hidden in these words AND asked for clarification....which we're still waiting for. So on this matter - over to you, Howard.

I tell non-programmers that making a program modular is the FIRST thing we do when creating a program, even before writhing the first line. That they undertake this years after tells us a lot on their methods, or confirm what all programmers knew for long: the LL viewer is written with the feet, without any method or quality control.

Flexi sculpties!
Prims and Flexi prims that can attach/link at multiple points, both to other prims and the avatar mesh.

Actually a patch for flexi sculpties is on the way my friend. Hang in there!

It has been said elsewhere, but a hidden mode that shows you as offline to all friends, would be nice. But I would also appreciate a "quiet" mode that would block out chat without going busy or blocking IMs.

Please have the avatar editing window show the avatar's height.
12-30-2008 10:41
I have what I believe to be a very simple request. In the avatar editing window could you, Howard, please add in the ability for one to see the height of their avatar?

SL lacks a sense of scale. Exploring even some of the most well done areas of SL reveals this. I believe encouraging a better sense of scale within the world begins with the avatar. Prims are measured in metres, though few pay much attention to that, instead building around the perceived height of their avatar, which of course may be wildly out of proportion with most other avatars.

Animations are made entirely without thought to avatar height. And even if an animator sold animations tailored to specific heights, most would be lost as to the height of their very own avatar, unable to make an educated purchase.

Out of those who do give a thought to height, most seem to use scripts that use llGetAgentSize, which provides a height significantly shorter than the avatar's actual height, further confusing the issue of scale within SL.

As I said, it seems to be a very small thing, but I do believe it is very important to many aspects of design and general content creation within SL. Animation, environments, even so far as allowing for a greater range of avatar heights as the average height is coaxed down from the higher end of the scale where it currently resides.

Thank you, it would be greatly appreciated.
