OK well evidently they CAN NOT DO BETTER. This is like every stinking update, every stinkin' time. TEST YOUR CRAP BEFORE YOU RELEASE IT ON US?!?!?!

There's just absolutely no excuse for all this, I can't remember when Linden Labs released something that actually functioned the way it is supposed to?!?!

Bottom line, since LL has no viable competition in it's field, there is no obligation on their part to actually provide something that works. THIS HAS BEEN SINCE DAY 1!!!
Until there is competition, or a class action lawsuit, bend over and like it. And they know it.
How many people have to pay you clowns how much tier before you actually make a half descent product?

No, use this update, no go back to an older fubar'd version, NO NO want it to work, TURN DOWN EVERY SETTING YOU HAVE, NO NO WAIT UHHH UHHHH......... uh yeah

Curious, if time = money, then how much lag time, crash time, down time in one day,
TIMES 365 days a year, TIMES how many people?!?!

How much money does that equal nickle and dimeing your residents WORLDWIDE?!?!

Yeah thanks again for the crap Linden Labs, you guys are hilarious!!

Oh Jonny, they can do better. The 1.19 series of viewers (pre-windlight) is significantly better in terms of stability, texture performance, and rendering speed on (especially on older equipment - sorry - can't upgrade the laptop - it will NEVER perform well with windlight, and despite the claims by LL, 1.20+ is slower even with graphics turned down further.)

The 1.20 / 1.21 branches really broke texture loading though. They need to revert that part of the code. It got REALLY aggressive at dumping cache when you leave a sim, which was a huge mistake... How many times do you have to quickly go somewhere to do something, and then come back to where you were? For me it is a VERY VERY common thing to do.
In 1.19 you could hover your mouse over a texture and it would load - not so in 1.20+.

The limit of 1G of cache is silly though. In the modern day of 500G+ drives, a cache that small doesn't make sense. Even then, it's not "sticky enough." A cache with little in it gets textures dumped that just shouldn't be. Perhaps they also need to add a "hit count" on the texture to keep it around if it is accessed frequently.

I sure hope 1.22 has http texture loading too. UDP just stinks!

1.21.6 (99587)
10-19-2008 06:13
I downloaded the new version of the viewer on Friday, the one where my chat appears in blue, and i have been crashing every 20 minutes or so. This viewer has been for me the worst one for crashes for over a year now. I am not technically minded , I just download when I am told to and I have not had many problems at all. However this is just crazy and please LL fix it fast so I can continue to enjoy Second Life.

Thank you

I stopped downloading any viewer from LL ages ago. I suggest using the alternatiives like Onrez viewer, Cool viewer, Nicholaz viewers or RealXTend viewers. They all pretty stable and at least you know what your getting in terms of basic functionality.

Well, for doing scripting, I need a viewer that supports Mono now. I'm running the Cool Viewer 1.21.5r3 at the moment (I see 1.21.6 is out), but when I need performance, it's the 1.19 series of cool viewer. Running old viewers all the time is just not an option anymore unless Henri or someone backports Mono to 1.19...

The answer though is that LL really needs to get aggressive at squashing these bugs, and should not be releasing new viewers that are WORSE than the older ones. Again, this is pretty clearly a situation where a date target was kept at the expense of quality. That's a senior management problem. The next release should really focus on performance and reliability. A feature freeze should be in place NOW.

The new released viewer is a big improvement for me. I agree it has the issues of not completely quitting in Vista, etc. But, it seems to be much more stable in my case. No crashes so far and running almost 24 hours a day - watching memory seems to indicate the memory leaks are improved or fixed.

Who do I contact
10-20-2008 08:32
I dl the 1.121.6 (99587) and found I could not access estate tools. I initially it was a problem through the sim owner and contacted them. While I was waiting, I decided to reinstall it, but I mistakenly installed the latest release candidate. Well lo and behold I was able to access estate tool. Well I uninstalled that and reinstalled the current viewer and still cannot access estate tools. For now I am using the release candidate. It appears to be an issue with the viewer, who do I contact to point out this problem.

Thanks

I've had a few crashes in 1.21.6 that remind me of my experience with RC5. I click on something and then SL crashes (once got a beachball for a moment before it went down). Granted, it doesn't happen as much and it seems more stable, but I thought I should mention it. I'm not sure if it's the same kind of crash, so I will keep observing.

On my Imac the latest release candidte spikes the system resources like it used to and I have to kill the app when my system comes back.

Not acceptable at all.

1.21.6 seemed very stable for me the first two days. Since then, I've begun crashing a lot (usually when camming or teleporting), and lagging constantly (everywhere, every sim, all the time). It's gotten so bad that I'm now using alternative viewers, which I'd rather not do, but something has to be done.

The new release candidate actually works better. I installed the new viewer with the forced upgrade and my system hanged and lagged even on the lowest of all resolutions. Then I installed the release candidate and all was well. You might want to try it before trying an alternate browser. Seems like SL viewers work only best on 64 bit machines, but my 32 bit runs nicely with the release candidate.

Crashed 2 Systems
10-23-2008 18:19
I've had this new release wreck 2 computers - well it has certainly messed up my desktop. Have trouble booting up and then IF I do get going does a memory dump sometime - even if I am NOT in SL.

My laptop seems more robust. I had trouble starting THAT up a day after I installed the new program so went in dleted SL, ran a disk clean and the McAffee, which picked up 2 Trojans in the conime.exe file that weren't there. After I cleaned it up, restarted the system the Tojan s had been removed and my laptop is running fine. Still working on getting my desktop restored.

But with this kind of damage done, there's no way I can go back to game and I'm sure npt recommending it to anyone else.

Since the new release I have had issues. During the peek hours, usually at night, and the weekends, I can not be on SL for more then 10 minutes without freezing and then crashing out. I read this forum, saw that most people think it is the viewer and so tried another. I had the same trouble. With me, it seems that it might be server side and not client side.

Has anyone solved this problem yet?
Is there a Solution or hot fix out there?

I'd like to get back to building some time soon.

You don't have to use 1.20.17. However, it plugs a serious security loophole. If you run earlier versions (which you can do, by using 1.18.5 with the Nicholaz patch, for example) you run the risk of someone being able to hack your computer and access your files.

Sorry Lindal, you are misinformed. The Nicholaz viewers have the security problem also fixed.

.... Worlds and textures definitely take longer to load with the current RC5......

I think this slower loading of everything (Worlds and textures) is not related to the viewer. My guess is that LL has slowed down some datattraffic to be able to handle the more concurrent users.

I can't telport w/o losing my attachments and it's annoying!
Things show as worn but aren't and won't do detach/take off.
I have to wear something else in the attachment points to rewear w/e I was wanting to.
By the 2nd week I was making a new "What I'm wearing" Folder to quickly put back on the copyable prims and Huds on teleports arrivals.
I had it beofre for almost 2 weeks then it just stopped, ya!
Now a few months later it's back.
XP Pro, NVIDIA, 2 gigs of ram, almost 30 fps, latest SL reg client.
Del temp files, uninstalled versions of SL, unplugged router, reinstalled, let inventory load, quit, came back, nope same BS, no matter where I go MG, PI, OS.
New router, new cable modem, had line tested, response was good, no others riding my cable modem.
So nothing much on my end has changed and if so, for the better and finding it hard to believe it's well "just me".

I have a huge crash problem (I crash every 5 or 10 minutes), but it's not with the latest viewer only, it's been going on with the last two or three viewers actually. So I decided to try one of the alternatives viewers. I wanted to download the Dale Glass one, but the problem is the downloading doesn't seem to be working. It's stuck at 28%, and the remaining time shows 9 hours 45 minutes (!!!!), and it keeps increasing. Is that normal? I think I'm just going to cancel it, and try again.

+1 Let me add my vote. I haven't timed it to the minute but it's close to 30 minutes CRASH. I kept cking my settings and then I bump into this thread. Forget this! SL needs a better way to test before they release. Sorry but it's lame.

Edit: I just timed it and it is 30 minutes. I'm shocked. It's like German or British trains, On Time! :p LOL :D

Never Crashed So Much Since Starting SL Over Two Years Ago
11-16-2008 20:58
This is just so embarrassing, and I thought things were looking so well. I have constant crashes and 'item unavailable in database' errors and corrupted items that don't appear correctly. I don't have time to chase down and report every time something like this happens. Come on, do a little friggin' QA please. I am a big supporter and have been very patient but this is just too much. I would run to a competitor if there were any out there and any listening should turn up the heat. Many of us would leave SL in a heartbeat for something better.

I am no tech geek...just an average player...but losing patience rapidly. I've not timed the crashes but it seems like even more often than 30 minutes. I play for at least 5 hours everyday...crashing constantly. For the first time in 7 months I hesitate to log on. The crashes are ruining my SL life!! sheez. GGRRRRRRR!!!

Most of the symptoms mentioned here I have suffered apart from the horrific crash rate.

I am running the latest STD viewer, so can only assume the slowness to load inworld items textures and AVs even as being server side issues. Often enough its quicker and easier to relog than wait for things to load after a TP. Seems rediculous but true that SL is seriously screwed and suffers more than just viewer issues.

I believe as Landlord said Linden Labs have throttled back the system to cope. I have a very good system with a fast enough graphics card dual core, gf9600 1G ram and 4 gig of ram etc and sculpties attached to AVs lose definition after a few metres, curves are clipped and my draw distance is set to 96m when its busy just to try and load quicker....

Its all those dirty OS abusers I guess destroying SL and overusing the resourses that LL gave them in the first place *dont flame me I am one of them*
