Hi,

Unfortunately, we have another nasty sim crasher out there, and are going to be starting an emergency deploy tonight. The plan is:

- 50% of the grid tonight, starting ~21:00 Pacific
- 50% of the grid tomorrow morning, starting ~07:00 Pacific

If you experience any problems with your sim, please include it's name in your comment Thanks for bearing with me for yet another emergency deploy.

edit: the question came up elsewhere on how many servers, talkin' physical boxen, make up SL. Any chance you know that number of the top of your head?

I think there are about 5,900 servers, based on comments by Lil Linden.

We've rolled approximately 700 / 2200 regions for tonight's work. I'll update again as we get to the 2/3 mark.

We've done the pilot sims, plus a good chunk of the rest. Tomorrow we'll have about 3700 sims to do, mostly odds and the rest of the evens.

That was in September of 2009.

Was this just a bug in the server or was it (also) something people were exploiting?

We had 6 crashes (Wends & Thurs) that were caused by a griever and confirmed by
LL support.

Is there a approximate server number where the cutoffs will be? During the the last emergency update, the progress updates made it possible to guesstimate when our sim would be restarted.

Unfortunately, no. We've decided that the best way to do this roll would be in random order, for security reasons.

Since this is totally way off topic I'm not going to address it here. I am in world right now though, so feel free to send me an IM!

I was planning to record a Second Life video at that time, but due to this surprise, I'll have to postpone it until this afternoon SLT (2010.01.23-Sa), if this were completed, and that has altered the other plans like rendering the video of the announcement, and other stuff on Zwinky, WeeWorld, Gaia, IMVU and other virtual worlds.

Your missing so many costs associated with running SL that its not funny. Yes I suspect LL make a whole lot of $ out of us, but not as much as your guessing.

wow 3 emergiancy rolls in a row, been a long time we had so many.
Wonder if this is a sign of quicker rolling out serius bug fixes instead of waiting for 2 or 3 to get fixed before doing a roll or that there are more serius bugs being discovered in this version?

Lil, where's the Release Notes on this Rolling Restart ??

The Wiki page looks rather empty for this release

It's a security rolling, so we may get the Release Notes after the rolling is done i guess.

But restarts do keep the club I work at empty, folk hide at restarts, ((.

What was the most detailed explanation we got for the last two emergency restarts?

I assume it's too early to ask for much about this one.

TY! That's about where I thought it was too but was looking for an official quote from a Linden for another post here where the number was being debated..

The last two restarts were for bugs in LSL that would cause a sim to crash instantly. In some cases the simstate won't even save, meaning that content loss can occur.

The details on how to reproduce these crashes will be left as an exercise to the reader, of course. (I ain't tellin! )

And now the glitches begin.

I'd check the chat record to get the exact message but SL is locked up.

It was something about balances not showing correct values and parcel holdings not displaying correctly.

I don't believe I even knew that the other problems were with LSL as opposed to, say, sims being crashed by accidentally attaching a box to your hand, so thanks for the additional info.
