From: Madhu Maruti With respect, I don't think it's such a terrific idea. First, does anyone even buy software in boxes anymore? I have the impression that this is a rapidly dwindling market. Second, people who have spent $39.95 or whatever on a box, even if it comes with added content, are going to be annoyed that others have received the software for free - and, they are going to be even less likely to want to spend more money contributing to the SL economy than users who sign on for free. Exactly, it's an illusion of scarcity. The compiled code is free to reproduce in endless perfect quantities, but a box, a BOX has mass to it, and mass is limited. Hence the software IN the box must be just as scarce.

Realistically folks this would be the end of SL as we know it. SL has been flying under media radar for years now and rightfully so. How do you suggest that LL "markets" BJ- Animations and Doggy style animations and BDSM clubs and alternative lifestyle SIMs etc.?...place the box on the porn book shelves hidden behind the counter in plastic at the local 7-11? They are "barely" able to dodge german media bullets concerning pedophelia and all of a sudden they're supposed to open their doors to the world and say "come on in" "Dont mind the furries yiffing in the corner and the two vamps in the blood chacuzzi getting it on"? It's hard enough for them now to think up ways to deter the underaged from sneaking in un noticed but can you imagine an SL CD ROM box on the shelves of every wal mart in America? Not going to happen...and remember..the little disclaimer that says "game experience may change online"?...hmmm... they might as well just change the name from Second Life to that. ...and plaster it real big on the front of the box too!
