I use Windows 2000 Pro on a high-end system, intentionally, and maintain the OS should be supported.
Relative to many considerations I could relate, it is my opinion the decision to quit support is based on very narrow perspectives. I chose to not inlcude lengthy related expository because the decision has already been made to no longer continue support. |

It's not like the viewer stopped working yesterday. It's just like the rest of your software now.
If the day comes when the viewer won't run on less than XP SP2, use the --channel parameter on whatever you're running now. Now, LL, are you guys going to get working on an x64 version for Windows 7? _____________________

well when they officially do away with the win2k ability to access the grid, I or somebody will be able to whip up a client or even I might be able too.

As long as the "-channel" switch works, you *can* always force SL to let you log in with versions older than the current "officially supported" ones, so if a future version of the SL viewer breaks under Win2K, just reinstall the previous version, then right-click on the shortcut that launches SL, select "properties", then go to the Target field and add something like -channel "Win2KUser" to the command line, and SHAZAM!, you're in.) The -channel trick isn't guaranteed to continue to work forever for older viewers. The SL protocols change over time, and the server has to contain code to work with legacy versions of them. Eventually support for some of the oldest versions will get dropped, or at the very least insufficiently regression-tested, because very few people care about them any more. Or LL might find a major security problem that requires an incompatible change. You've probably got at least a few months to continue to use Windows 2000. If third party developers pitch in it might continue to work even longer. But eventually you'll be forced to upgrade, just as users of Mac OS X older than 10.4 will be. |
