its about time that we all open source the sim server code to grow the sl community to diffrent competors when they buy sim from, not just liden labs or congiton and its time to break the monopoly and let others run own sim servers.

I can see the answer to this one already.

That's kinda like saying McDonalds has a monopoly on McDonalds burgers (actually a good thing, IMO.. ick!)..

Let's think about this a minute...

Minute is up...

Conclusion: No, LL is not going to open source the server side software because that would cut into thier income.

Alternatative? Let have a look at this: http://opensecondlife.org/wiki/OpenSim

Conclusion: OpenSim may one day give an alternative; until then, SL is a money pit.

Don't have a link to hand, but it was announced that they were already looking into open sourcing the sims. There was a thread about it, maybe a week or two ago.

Isn't there some way for them to release limited code so we can have our own sims to ourselves, but be unable to connect them to the grid? Then I could see LL easily charging the same fees to hook those sims up, getting just as much money without actually being responsible for the sim itself.

Granted, I haven't put more than five minutes of thought into this, but I haven't seen the point made yet.
