The other thing I'd like to point out is that a lot of clubs die, simply because the owner(s) quit. There's something to be said for patience and persistence. I've seen SO many clubs start out and quit within 1-2 months. They hit the first bit of drama, or see the lindens go streaming out of their account, and they're outta there. Who says you have to quit when traffic plummets or your bank account is zero? Rethink it, restrategize, and start over. Again. People sometimes say to me "wow your club is still going." It's a very typical club, not a huge success by any means. The only reason is, I haven't quit. At some point I may but I haven't reached that point yet.

It's SL... even if it "dies off" ... rebirth is always possible.

I think it is unfair to straight up say that staff shouldnt enter contests. The fact is in most clubs the staffar essentially the regulars and in many club they work ONLY for tips, so in my mind they are volunteers.

I think it is off when a staff member joins in a contest while they are on a shift. Of course they shouldnt be then.... but if a staff member is at the club enjoying the club in a social sense why shouldnt theybe able to join in a contest like everyone else?

E, I must not have myself clear on this point. I can't speak for Serina, but I was assuming it was understood I was referring to staff entering contests WHILE on duty. This is what I've seen quite a few times. On the thread I started on this subject months ago, a club owner said that the DJ she hired even joined the contest, which she didn't find out about until afterwards, somehow.

So those are the types of things I'm referring to. Days off, they're regular patrons.

a few random thoughts on clubs

1. What ever happened to the wonderful club on the sim Peclach? You probably have never heard of it but it was one of the most beautiful piano bars in all of SL. The owner/hostess played piano live for my friends there one night, as she often did, and never once asked for a tip (nor did i see a tip jar as i recall). She was one of the first to catch on to the Intan dance machines that rez out couples balls and saves a ton of money too, which i remember being impressed by. The sim was a lush, green organic build full of waterfalls and realistic forests...the club was an 'upscale' modern yet organic build with woods and warm metals. It also sported a glass dancefloor outside with metal supports, done in a similar way to the geodesic domes with panels instead of just one big glass chunk.

2. Is there a club where people JUST go to listen to live DJ's or performers and not get sucked/begged into a contest, sploder, or some such? I would really like to find a club that is supported by some other means, that doesn't rely on advertising, and that is just a bunch of nice people trying to dance... Preferrably without taking their clothes off and covering every square inch of the build with signage. (thus increasing texture lag)

3. Finding clubs via inworld search (as with most other searches) is a nightmare. Won't some ingenious entrepreneurial soul out there figure out a way to promote the good ones (if they do exist) via an external website or perhaps an inworld teleport/landmark site you could visit and choose such things as genre, age, size, theme, event, etc?

4. Dresscodes for entry are now being experimented with some nightclubs in SL. I'm not talking about formal vs. naked, i mean something like Le Cubic Effect vs. Joe's Tshirt Shack... the idea of only letting in those who are wearing a 'higher fashion' or 'more sophisticated style'... The pro's of this concept are i think debatable to most, but i like the idea of socializing with well put together avatars, regardless of their personal style as much as i like to be surrounded by beautiful builds. I think it does heighten the experience, and quite frankly if you are going there to meet someone of like mind, why not? However, i'm sure there are those that avoid those places like the plague because of the aforementioned 'cliques' that arise. What do you think about dresscodes for entry?

The one i can think of off the top of my headis called Rockers... they dont do constests, just have DJs and hang out Quantum Tribes is also like that. We run contests and events at our club cos people enjy them, but e dont beg anyone to enter... if we ony get two entries then that is all we get. Some people might not have clothes for the thee or justmight not like it.

As for signage.... i think we have one sign wrning people of the rabbit hole and the name of the club written onto the dance floor. Other than that our build is an ourdoor garden surrounded by trees and mushrooms and flowers (heheh sorry im proud of it i just redesignd it)

I HATE the idea of a dress code, unless it is to be clothed.... but to say you must be in such and such attire (cept for formal places with formal attire i can gt that)... well it excludes people. If you re a newbie who walks into a place where the dress code is 'higher fashiion' and they are asked to leave cos they only have freebies.... or god forbid are sill in the clothes from the LL library....

Sorry i just dont like to discriminate against people who might nothave the money or other resorces to find nice things in SL

The few clubs we frequent these days the patrons are all generally dressed in evening attire because that's the type of music/dance style we like so birds of a feather and all that.

However, speaking to the newbie situation (or those that just don't know the patrons are generally in dressier attire), the club I used to work for was a vintage 1940's jazz club and most people either came in 40's attire or regular evening attire. We would invariably have people arrive and say "Oh, I'm a bit underdressed for here." At that point the managers, cigar girls, owners, whoever was working would say, "There's only one rule here...that you are dressed...please come on in." The person was made to feel welcome, etc. Invariably, the next time they showed up, they had gotten a vintage outfit. :)

I've only run into two places thus far that insist on a specific dress code: Avilion Ballroom of course...and the whole ambiance of that place would be ruined by someone with jeans and a T (and they offer free formal wear at the entrance for those who don't have any). Then another place we went - a Latin salsa place. Their ad said "formal attire." I usually wear long formal dresses but that night I went with a shorter look per the salsa dancing. Still classic, just short. I was immediately IM'd by the manager/owner/whoever asking me to change into more formal wear and again directed me to the free clothes at the entrance. Then my Partner got an IM because he wasn't wearing a jacket...he had on a dress shirt and vest. We just left there.

So, I'm sort of conflicted on that one...but in general I prefer venues where people dress nicely. :)

I work in a club myself as a dancer up at the VIP Room and i have to agree with Czari and Serina, i myself don't enter contests even when not working and i believe most of the other dancers do the same, i believe it is alright for dancers to enter the contests when they are not working though, i just don't myself.

I believe the VIP Room has been open for quite a while but that does not mean we are always busy, we have our off days like anyone else it's finding and attracting crowds to us. Clothing i believe is not a big issue as long as they dress for the event, it does not matter if it's a freebie or high end fashion lol.

Wow Czari, i'm not so sure that this guy knows what salsa is lol, they generally wear shorter dresses it's more sexy and that's what salsa is all about, sensual movement lol. Always wanted to learn Salsa in RL lol.

I've just been exploring empty danceclubs again and found some nice ones. I'm hoping to get a group together to go and party in some of these out-of-the way places and exchange info about intersting venues for impromptu parties. My group is the Egotherapy (SL) Group and it's free to join!

that would be Club Timeless and Forest..
Me and Another owned it..
you will get two versions as to why it died by talking to either of us lol so there is no reason to go into deep details..i'll save you from the migrain of it all and just say..Drama and egos on both sides had a lot to do with it going bye bye..

Well that's what I thought too. Salsa = sexy Latin dance = short dress.

Here's a photo of Salsa competition dancers I found on the Wiki:

Now maybe the problem with the outfit my partner was wearing (he was IM'd to be told to put on a jacket) is that he was wearing a shirt & vest. Ahhhh...maybe the jacket is essential in salsa. *grins*

/me ponders sending this photo to the owner of that club. Naaaaaaawwww... :p
