From: Argent Stonecutter Technically it's possible, of course. There's dozens of technical solutions. The issue isn't whether it's possible, but what it costs. Implementing this at LL would require dedicating more resources than a sim currently requires for the duration of the session. Setting up the pool of processors (no matter what implementation they use) is a significant investment, what do you think they could charge for it, and would people be more interested in metaphorically "going skype" instead by running it for "free" on their own PC? Yes, I agree, this is quite possibly not something that would make sense as a Linden product. But for someone else to offer as an added-value service, or even as a product you could run on your own PC...

personally i'd love to see a more stable for of e-mail to Av and some IM to AV as well, with some sensible controls like white/black listing and OPTIONAL presence advertisement. and pie of course... pie is always good.

Argent, I voted "pie", but what I really wanted was "none of the above." Not "I don't care about any of these" but "I actively do NOT want any of these." I value the partition between my SL and RL.

I value the partition between my SL and RL. 1+ A key strategic difference between sites like Facebook and SL is that the former encourage the sharing of personal information, while the SL environment tends to discourage it. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but I'd hate to see SL move away from its current approach.

I want email and IM to avatars to allow me to avoid sharing personal information. If I need to be able to contact someone in SL when I can't log in, right now, I have to share an email address or other outside contact information with them, and vice versa. SLim does nothing to change this because it's another proprietary unproxyable protocol that doesn't work behind a firewall, that I can't use from a PDA or cellphone. Things like AjaxLife involve sharing my password with a third party.

I think changing the IM protocol to something like XMPP would actually be a great benefit. First, it should eliminate chat lag (a major annoyance of mine), as it would run on XMPP servers as opposed to LL ones. In addition, it would allow the possibility of IM communication outside of SL, if you chose.

One of the comments to the "Letter to your boss on why your company should use SL" blog post expressed a strong desire to use real names in SL. And I am very afraid that that is where we are heading. Get rid of that nasty Adult Content, clean the place up spick and span like a corporate boardroom, then do away with avatar names...so much more useful and productive to be the same in SL as you are in RL. Easier for the corporations to target their advertising to you, too. I won't be here, when that day comes.
