And my point is that as the digital reality grows and more people have experiences in the digital reality, that physical world anchor becomes less neccessary over time. It is a transitional bridge in the early pioneering days of the digital reality (i.e., now), but I honestly do not think it's a permanent referential need for a physical world anchor. That may be the case today, but it won't be the case forever -- in time, the digital reality will create its own anchor proper to itself, just as the physical reality does now. It is simply a question of how many experiences how many people have in the digital reality, and in ways that differ from the familiar, comfortable referents from the physical reality.

I disagree. The physical world anchor will be nessasary until we find a way to bring new human beings into the digital world before they experience the physical one. The physical world anchor works because it is the foundation of our existance - no matter how deeply you go into the virtual, you ultimately exist in the physical because you are, indeed, a physical being. The physical world is where we first learn the concepts used in the virtual. That anchor isn't going to become unnessasary anytime soon. :)

Too true!

There is a whole language and frame of reference that makes sense in SL. My partner and I often respond jokingly with "There's Something You Don't Hear in RL" to a comment one of us makes. For example:

"I'm going to change my eyes."

"Take your hair off."

"Should I wear another skin?

"Let's change into our dragons."

"Just click on the cup to drink it."

"The food is all wearable."

In RL, breaking bread or sharing a meal is a very important way to connect with others and has been for hundreds of years. It is normal that we would want to use the same kinds of connecting mechanisms in SL as we use in RL. That being said, when i first heard about food in SL i thought it was nutty. But it is quite fun to go to an event and see the cool food and anims people have made and participate and connect with others by "sharing" them. There used to be a restaurant or two where you could go and they served a 5 course meal complete with an avatar server who took your menu requests. It was quite elegant and a WONDERFUL way to spend an evening.

In my mind SL is all about connecting and anything that fosters connections is welcome.

I have a kids placemat that serves me spaghetti, fish sticks, juice boxes etc. It wasn't cheap but I liked it so much i went back to the store and bought one for each place setting at the dining room table. Sometimes the family sits at the table and eats, sort of like a RL family after school/work. When I have a friend visiting sometimes I say "Hey! I know how to make macaroni and cheese!" and I run off to the kitchen and go through the motions of showing off the food making abilities of an unsupervised 8-year-old. Then we go to the place settings and eat it. If a babysitter comes over she will do the cooking, and it goes a little more smoothly ;) . I think it adds a great deal to the experience. The placemat serves as a non-verbal cue that it is time to relax and have a conversation.

If you continue to think of it the way you're thinking of it now, very little makes sense to reproduce in the virtual world. Its all just flying electrons and spinning metal. What's the point of any of it, if not to play pretend for a bit?

(incidentally, the placemat is by ~*~CAS~*~ Voti (201, 49, 23), along with many catering-style products not specifically for kids.)

There is now a micrwave and a toaster made, that lets you make the food and takeit out of the microwave or toaster, my kids have a blast with it.

Been pondering this a bit more. It may not be as fanciful as it sounds.

Anyone ever hear of food fights? I think I might have worn a bit of food in college....just sayin. ;)

I eat and drink rather often in SL. For me it adds a level of reality to everything. My home has a kitchen and dinning room. In part because in my RL home the kitchen is the heart of our home. The social center. And it just does not feel like a home to me without a kitchen. When guests come I often invite them to come and sit at the kitchen table and have a cup of coffee with me, just as I do in RL.

Last thanksgiving my SL wife and I could not be together in RL, so I went out and bought a thanksgiving dinner in SL. My wife and I sat in the dinning room, with candlelight and flowers, and shared our thanksgiving virtually. We talked, drank and just enjoyed each others company. It was a night we still talk about, how wonderful it felt to share that event together.

So while eating does not nourish our bodies, it can certainly nourish our souls.

What Lizz said.

Besides, when you think about it, almost NOTHING makes sense in SL. Nothing is real; therefore, why bother with anything? Clothes, you name it.

Because . . . it's fun!

I didn't say it would be soon, but I do think it will be eventual. I think we just disagree. :)
