There was much speculation about what Philip was up to with his new company. Now we know for sure - a reputation currency system for businesses

From: Philip Rosedale
...how very lovemachine. I was intrigued by the observation that if you read different blogs about what we are doing, the average picture created by reading them all is better than any specific one. This is so very self-referential, because the design of the lovemachine (the original company culture tool) is in part that the average of all peer opinions about you is the most accurate indicator of your performance.

Anyways... it is so cool and flattering to read the various postings about what we are doing! But, like that bloated horrific spacenavigator dude in Dune said... "I see plans within plans."

Yes, we are working on making a version of the Linden Lab LoveMachine (and some other tools too), that hopefully we can sell to some companies and help them out.

No, that is not all we are doing. :)

love,

Philip

I know there was a reputation system for avatars before my time but I wonder if this might be something Linden Lab is considering implementing for content creators. Gaming the system, like traffic and XStreet ratings would certainly be of concern for a SL type of system but it could make a good testing environment for his new venture. Not sure how well it will work though in that context but time will tell. Many real life companies have such measures in place already with their performance appraisal systems but I can see how he might want to leverage the increasing number of microeconomies developing in social networking applications like FB or app stores for his Love Machine.

Dang! When I read the topic I thought Philip was getting married or instituting a "LL sanctioned" dating service in SL...lol.

Interesting articles. Thanks for posting those. :)

He is married already I think. I would dread the day that there is an LL sanctioned dating service ... we'd get all the E-Harmony rejects or maybe they are all here already :p

I always wondered how exactly the fabled "Love Machine" differed from a simple automated popularity contest. In 2006 I saw some astonishing smarm that claimed to be actual Love Machine submittals from LL employees; but perhaps they were apocryphal.

Among the engineers I've managed, I wouldn't say that competency, productivity, creativity, or thoroughness correlated at all with popularity. However, for customer-facing jobs such as customer support, something like the Love Machine seems possibly useful.

It will be interesting to finally see the mechanics and justification for the Love Machine.

I wonder, will Philip be working with Cory Ondrejka on this? Didn't Cory create the original one?

I'm not sure who the original creator of the Love Machine was but I see no mention of Cory in the new company. Apparently he is collaborating with Ryan Downe, the current (??) Chief of Staff at LL on this project, hence my inkling that this might be something integrated into the Second Life microeconomy model somehow, before he tries to get widerspread adoption in other virtual economies: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/ryan-downe/0/843/624

Our company thrives on a similar concept called the "Hate Machine" where you email everyone else about anyones mistake.
Then when times get lean the managers sack those with the least drama as they obviously haven't been doing anything all year.

Trust me on this one...they're already in SL....in droves!!!

*Case in point - One evening I, errmmmm, a friend of mine, signed up with a SL avatar dating service run by two residents who met on SL and got married RL. The next day I was contacted by a man who said he loved the photos I'd posted, he enjoyed dressing well in SL and wished the lady he was with to do the same and also enjoyed the Victorian period. He apologized that he had no avatar photo posted but he was bald with green eyes.

We corresponded back and forth and decided to meet to dance and, in his words, see if there was any chemistry.

Now when "my friend" ;) signed up, she thought a "user name" was asked for...just like in any online site, for anonymity, plus, iirc, only a first name was required...so a different name than my avatar name was used. I, *ahem* my friend assumed the man (and everyone) had done the same. Acutually, the name of the man alone should have been somewhat of a red flag. One of the things his profile said was that he was definitely looking for a SL girlfriend, with RL possible.

Anyway, the man sent correspondence to me saying he had been unable to find me online. That made me wonder, as of course he couldn't locate me online as we were signed up with "user names" so I did a People Search in world of his dating service name. There was only one and, naive person I am, I assumed it wasn't him BECAUSE, that person was ENGAGED!! with the log quote of the proposal on his profile. I looked up the fiancee and saw the same log quote and how happy she was to be engaged to him, yadda, yadda.

Still not quite "getting it" as, to me, it wouldn't make sense to be on a dating service if one was engaged, I wrote back to the man and said that I'd looked up his name but knew it couldn't be him as that person was engaged.

That was the last I heard from him. The next day, all the info about him being engaged, log quote, etc. was gone from in profile; HOWEVER all the same info was still on the woman's, complete with log. This time, however, I looked at her picks and SHE had a photo of them together and, yep, the guy was bald. (A bit hard to tell eye color from photos.) The woman's engagement info, pick, etc. remained on her profile for at least several days until it too disappeared.

Strange, but true!

Because the world needs another way to reward charismatic people.

Like SL needs another mall.

This is going to change the world...how?

with so little love in the world this machine could save us all :D

The LuuuuV Machine

Oh, yeah....

Chorus:
(I,I,)I'm just a love machine and I won't work for nobody but you
(I,I )I'm just a love machine .............. A hugging kissing fiend

I think it's high time you knew
Whenever I think of you
My mind blows a fuse
When I lookIn your eyes
My meter starts to rise
And I become confused
My motor cranked electric goes
When I'm sitting next to you
Electricity starts to flow
And my indicator starts to glow

Repeat chorus

I'm gentle as a lamb
I'm not that hard to program
There's no way that you can lose
Chassis fits like a glove
I've got a button for love
That you've got to use (push it push it baby)
If you look into my power
I am sure you can find out how
To turn me on just set my dial
And let me love you for a little while ooooooh

Repeat chorus

La... La la la la..... La la la la.. La la
La la la la la.. La la la.... La la laaaaaaaaa
Push it push it baby, yeah......ah, ah

Repeat chorus

You were right Nika. Cory apparently came up with the original concept and Philip developed the technology behind it. He blogs a bit about it here:

There's already at least one SL dating service...I saw a banner ad for it on XStreet.

All such performance rating systems, both RL and SL, are gamed. It's the nature of the beast.

Yep there are a couple of them out there and I helped my friend beta test one. What I would really be concerned with, as I had initially said, is if there was some sort of grid wide officially LL sanctioned type service or functionality.
