to the OP:
It has no negative connotations for me - in my opinion the name is accurate to an extent and can also be taken with a grain of salt, or as an ironic commentary. As one wishes.
If it bothers someone, they dont need to spread it around that they are playing it. But MySpace and Facebook had stigma when first launched, too. For other reasons.
Not caring what people think, who think ill of us for judgmental reasons of their own making, helps.

From: Briana Dawson I'd gladly trade away my schizo-affective bipolar for a wheel chair and colostomy bag any day. Try rezzing matching shoes to match. and Dekka From: Dekka Raymaker WankLand? Wankyou wery much...... Regards the name 'Secondlife'? Much the same as a second wife isn't it? Do we want to change that name? The grass could be greener on the other side? Until you try you will never know except a second wife is not created by downloading, choosing your preferred language and then having to give a password everytime you log on and want to talk, The only similarity is that approximately every month we get a rolling restart where we just can't do anything. As for the lag, you get that with any relationship. As for the LOD, thats very similar but I notice it more with my beer glasses on and in the mornings I always have a problem with her rezzing. But the Name? I like it, so keep it just my opinion. As for the Second Wife, I am happy with my first, so I'll keep her...

From: Tegg Bode It may be accurate in a name but it doesn't exactly enthrall people to want to login, if you show other people they sort of look at the name and you can see them thinking something like, "poor sod, failing at Real Life addicted to fake life..........." From: Ingrid Ingersoll I always thought the name sucked. It makes great negative publicty though. "People with no lives go to Second Life" "Lacking a real life? Try Second Life!" "Second Life... for those who find real life too hard" Yeah, these are the types of reactions I was thinking of. It's good to be able to see everybody's views on the name, I have never seen anybody bring it up before, so I was curious what the general consensus was among residents. I agree about LL w/ the publicity...I think maybe they just haven't bothered to try & counter any of the negative publicity because they can't even support a decent amount of new users, but I could be wrong. When they ARE "ready", I guess we'll find out for sure. It looks like M Linden is really pushing in that direction, which makes sense; more active users means more money for LL. I wish SL was big enough to see a major magazine poll the general public about this, instead of just asking fellow residents. Asking us is kinda like "preaching to the converted" lol.

From: Larrie Lane Try getting matching shoes for the bag, you might change your mind after saying that.
Uh, sorry but no. You try talking to imaginary people who you see but no one else does. You try waking up to E.T.'s, or hearing "messages" in radio and T.V. or reading special messages made just for you on billboards, newspapers, websites, magazines, etc... Why don't you try struggling with whether or not that thing you see floating across the room doing stuff with mechanical arms is real or not. Should i go on about depression and suicide and agoraphobia and social anxieties all connected with the disorder? Screw that. I would take 90% of all physical ailments over brain disorders that alter your perception of reality ANY TIME.

I never had a problem with the name Second Life until I tried explaining other people, especially when I was younger. Kids are especially fast to pass off second life as some game for "losers". Actually I've had pretty bad success trying to explain the game/world/etc to anyone regardless of the name.
Textures? creating? what? Oh is that that game for people have no lives? I think I heard of that one.
When I explain my business most people think I'm taking part in a scam (anyone else get this?).

I'm thinking "AltLife". It has sort of the same connotations as Second Life (an "alternative" to real life) to the uninitiated, with added bonus meaning to those of us who have been around a bit.

I always figured it was a good way to weed out the people so tied up in a name that they would not, or could not look for themselves to make up their own minds. They have to wait until the media tells them it is ok before they call that sound bite theirs.

I actually liked Pep's "Secret Life" although that can be seen in a very negative light, too.
Maybe because I like that Cohen song "Secret Life" and thought it fit the way a lot of people play SL. But again, can easily be seen negatively.
"Second Life" is still okay with me; it fits.

I agree with the OP, I think the name sort of does conjure up images of people who don't have a life. But having said that, I think the name best represents what it is to a lot of people.
Secret life conjures images of brown paper bag deliveries. Depending on how you get your kicks, I guess some people would keep it a secret.
But the name SL doesn’t seem to prevent new people joining.

I like it.... But have to agree when I speak to people about it, they frown and look oddly at me and say... well whats wrong with yout first life. Perhaps, My 3d World? or Virtuals Internet or um.... Habitat for virtuals really I see nothing wrong with the name Second life.. No matter how much you sputter and spit, if you've invested money into this it is a second life...

When I first joined and was thrilled with the whole idea ,I told my pals and almost to a man I got. "Get a Life" "Whats wrong with the first one" ect. ect.. When I walked into my local I was greeted with " Get a life.........my name" for weeks .
I have learned not to mention it by name.Oh and should SL get any bad publicity I am the first to get it in the neck.LOL. So a name change would come too late for me!!

It's a shame 'Another World' is already taken: it's open enough to suggest the potential of virtual reality and simple enough to avoid the crawling skin and raised hackles that frequently symptomise mention of 'Second Life'.

I like "Another World" too - is it actually trademarked? I don't think there's a lot of risk of people confusing SL with an 18-year-old alien shooting game? Maybe "A New World"? Then they could use that fantastic symphony in their marketing material! (Maybe "Brave New World" )

From: Yumi Murakami I like "Another World" too - is it actually trademarked? I haven't checked but, given that they have been running since 1990, I figure the name probably is trademarked - or at least they would have fair grounds to contest use of the name by another company. You're obsessed with latinate stuff, Argent. I don't fancy the chances of attracting new residents with that style at all - apart from a few adventurous Jesuits and linguistic scholars.

I don't fancy the chances of attracting new residents with that style at all - apart from a few adventurous Jesuits and linguistic scholars. The advantage of Latin is that you're less likely to run into trademark problems, it's easily pronouncable for most Europeans, and it's recognizable to enough people to make it better than a completely made-up name. Plus there's the old principle of "Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur".
