I couldn't find a topic in this area. The newbie advice thread is not necessarily the same so I came up with this one. Anyways, I think we should compile of list of words and definitions/meaning for newbies here. I'm almost a month old and still don't know what some words mean in SL. So I'll start with a list.

SL - Second Life
RL - Real Life/First Life
Rez
Griefer
Sculptie
Flexi
Skin
Shape
SLT - Second Life Time (West coast time)
Parcel
Texture

These are off the top of my head. Feel free to add to the list.

There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Those links may not answer all your questions, so here's a quick stab at it.

Rez - to make something appear in world. You "rez" a box, or a set of poseballs, or a piece of furniture, on the ground. You "de-rez" by taking something from the ground ("take";) and putting it back in inventory. Supposedly the term derives from the term de-rez in the film Tron, unseen by me. It may also be related to the term 'resurrect.'

Griefer - someone whose fun derives from hurting others. E.g., someone who delights in creating a virus that infects SL (or your PC). Or in putting up ugly signs next to your land. Or in rezzing nuclear bombs on your shop floor.

Sculptie - a sculpted prim, created in a third-party program and imported into SL. This technique allows one to make complex shapes that still only use one prim. The alternative is to create prims with SL's built-in prim-creator, but they tend to be simpler.

Flexi - refers to things that are flexible and blow in the wind, like hair or skirts. Before flexi hair/skirts, those things were rigid and stiff.

Skin - your avatar's flesh covering. People usually replace the default skin with a purchased skin, or perhaps a freebie skin.

Shape - your avatar's skeleton and musculature, underneath the skin. You can alter this yourself with the 'appearance mode' sliders.

SLT - SL time (PST).

Parcel - a piece of land.

Texture - an image; in SL, it can be a standalone image, like a photo, or it can be used to make an object look more real. You might apply a denim texture to a pair of white pants to make them jeans. You might apply a map texture to a blank sphere to make it into a globe.

Hope this helps.

Griefer -- someone who derives their fun from annoying or hurting others. The most common technique for this in SL is by rezzing large numbers of prims to create instant, paralyzing lag in a local area.

Parcel -- All land in second life is divided into regions, which people call "sims" (the term refers to the fact that each region, other than openspace regions, runs on one server/simulator). A region can be all one unit, or the region owner can subdivide it into pieces. Each of these pieces is called a "parcel". The smallest parcel size is 512sqm, and the largest would be the size of an entire region -- parcels cannot overlap regions. Regions are often divided into parcels so as to allow plots to be sold or rented to others. Each parcel has its own set of parcel-level land controls accessible by the parcel owner, while in private island regions, the region owner retains some region-level controls over all parcels in the region. It is most useful to think of parcels not in terms of the size of the plot, but in terms of the normal number of prims that a parcel can support, because this will cap the amount of prims you can rez on the parcel. For example, a 512sqm parcel supports 117 prims (assuming no bonus) whereas an entire region supports 15000 prims. Private island owners can elect to distribute prims in a lopsided away among parcels -- so, for example, by having water or woodland parcels have very few prims, they can assign higher prim limits to parcels intended for development, which in effect allows the parcel holder to have more prims (this is often called "having bonus prims";). In addition, the amount of tier you have to pay to LL (for mainland parcels) or to your private island owner is based on the sqm size of your parcel (typically ... some private owners may price differently based on the quality of the plot or the number of prims allotted, for example).

I think Rez is short for resolve. I think it was also used in "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson. It can mean bringing an object out of inventory or creating it. But usually it means the process of things becoming visible. When you arrive somewhere and objects are not showing or are gray you are waiting for them to rez.

I agree with all this, it was however in Tron. I always took it to mean "resolve" also.

In Tron I always took it to be based on the word "resolution" as in graphics.

Exactly. That's the noun and the verb is resolve.
