As utterly, utterly, utterly infuriating as this must be, my guess is that a lawyer told them 'if you try to explain and even ONE word is out of place, they might be able to sue you. So stick to the generic form letters.'

It's the frigging lawyer's job to make sure nothing is out of place then

If that's the case, it sounds like to me that they don't have a solid case for the suspension to begin with. Who is in charge of this department? Byzantine Linden?

This is more than legal CYA if you ask me. This is either just sheer incompetence or total arrogance and contempt towards the customers.

I agree that there are too many instances of this sort of thing to bode well for business success.

Companies can put 'customer service' on the backburner for only so long before it will catch up with them.

ive never had this happen to me, but i think about it frequently.
every month i get large amounts (40k+) sent to me for tier payments. ive had 250k+ sent for partial island purchases, mainland dealings and the like. and what of the store? even a $200 sofa purchase puts me at risk? the idea that i can be automatically banned for doing nothing more than moving legit $L is frightening.

If they want to keep growing, surely they need to make all this CLEAR. There need to be rules posted here on the official site. They need to have them be part of the Terms of Service that every new registrant signs off on.

I should say that personally I've had some very good service from LL, and also a couple of instances that are unsatisfying. And both of those last came this week---when possibly things were in an uproar over there because of the world's financial meltdown.

I want to be optimistic that they will move forward and grow. And for that to happen, they have to be clearer with customers about what actions will result in bans and such.

Although I really really hate how Linden Lab process problems, I understand why its difficult, if you set rules saying you won't be investigated if transactions are below 'L$xxxx' then all the intelligent money extortionist would stay within these parameters, so to a point, this should be treated like drug taking, and therefore remain random.

However, they really should at least provide better info on why an action is taken against you.

The only other thing is to have a campaign to make it aware to everyone that this happens to, that they have a right to appeal and do it through the correct channels open to them. If this happened it would be less time consuming for the Lindens to provide more information initially than have to deal with all the appeals. probably.

the one thing that always bothered me .. and bothers me now..
when ppl pay you directly there is no option to refuse the payment

if ppl are being banned for receiving unsolicited random bad money payments... then SL should add this feature.

IMHO.

I think it's both of those, and especially the latter.

Apart from live help, which I've always had good service from, everything about LL is about ignoring their customers. Even those occasions when they get our views are shams, imo. Examples: they ask for our views concerning traffic and concerning mainland ads, but they ignore us and do what they were going to do anyway. I suppose if something imprtant is mentioned that they hadn't thought of, they'll take notice but, other than that, we're ignored.

My thinking is this. LL doesn't need each individual customer. All they need is a large number of users, so that this platform and system they are developing are continually tested. We are useful in that respect, but we are not the end users. We are just beta testers for them.

If I were the OP, I'd be rattling their cages continually until they either told me what happened, or banned me, but I wouldn't settle for the way things are now.

The Black Forest, at midnight, during a blizzrd, would be easier to see through.

Ouch.. it brings back the 500 US dollars I was docked by LL because it was alleged I bought hinky Lindens off E-Bay.... I got a form letter with no info, Linden Labs would never tell me exactly who I recieved these funds from so I could follow up on getting my 500 bucks back. I think I used Paypal to buy the purloined Lindens (it was a bad experience, I've blocked the memory) and there is some small print in the PP contract that says the account holder has no recourse. The whole process was so arcane I gave up. Linden Labs owed me an explanation and a name to prosecute, they still do. ::sigh::

If I had to guess, I'd say he got age-reported.

Unfortunately, that's a case where they really DO ban first and ask questions later. Having to verify who you say you are also fits with this kind of action.

The biggest problem is that it's being abused by griefers to make a target go away instantly, and causes more hassle for legitimate people than anyone who's actually underage.

Yes this is HIGHLY disturbing... I can personally think of hundreds of times that I've transferred funds exceeding this amount with no question or problem. Surely to goodness they aren't going to limit our transactions.
I use an alt as a "banker" to limit the amount in my main account, and routinely transfer thousands of Lindens to cover tier, and never had any problems. And for such small amounts! I mean, L$10,000 is what, 30 or 40 bucks? That's not even enough to fill my gas tank...

They also do it, if the details on the account are 'wrong.' It could be that too.

Thanks for the replies - I think that it MAY be because my surname actually IS Linden, and that I was uploading L$ through Lindex via my Paypal account that they thought I was a fraudster...I had to send over a copy of my passport/driving licence to prove that I was a RL Linden, and once they received this, my account was unblocked...I have changed my RL bank account and Paypal, and no suspicious activity has been going on...it just took sooo long to get sorted out doing it through the ticket submission thing

Ok - all together now - a rousing chorus:

One would hope that the LL folks were able to laugh, too. Or at least crack a wry smile.
