Avatars look like scarecrows

Hello, haven't logged in for months, but when I did just recently all of the avatars (including myself) look very unnatural. There is a cross above most with what looks like shreds of clothing or moss, and my person is barely legible as a human form. I have tried all the forums/knowledge base/etc. that I could find but no answer with any proposed solutions. Any help would be appreciated

Wow.. sounds very odd.

Maybe with a screenshot and some computer specs someone can try to help. :)

Good luck.

You might want to try Live Help. Can your video card handle Windlight, which now we all have? I'm sure some of the much more informed will be able to answer your question. Windlight came with the last mandatory viewer. Give other posters time to come in and respond. Someone out there will give you the assistance that you need. I'm technology challenged, sorry I can't be of more help.

It's the "hardware skinning" option. See the following thread for the fix:

Screenshots, make and model of computer, amount of ram, OS, video card, what verson of SL, what version of graphics driver, etc.

Also, you say you've tried stuff you found in forums, etc. What stuiff? If you telll us what you've tried and found not to work then people won't have to spend their time uselessly making suggestions you've already tried.

If I go anything above the lowest resolution in preferences, I see the problem. The second lowest resolution is where I see the "scarecrow", the higher ones everything is just real bright. I have a decent P4 HP with 512 ram, might be too low for SL though. I will check out the skinning thread, thanks.

Yikes, 512 doesn't sound like much for SL! I almost believe that CPU and ram is slightly more important than the video card you own. It stands to reason why all the fans in the PC switch into turbo mode as soon as I launch the client! Happens on my desktop AND laptop. My BF always knows when I'm in SL by the "whrrrrrrr" of the engines...LOL!

In another thread, Madhu says:

Yes, search for "shredded", "tattered," or "scarecrow" and you will find the previous thread. I know because my brother had the same problem and I came and found the solution for him here. The solution was: turn off the "hardware skinning" option in graphics preferences. You may have to check the "custom" tickbox to find the hardware skinning option.

Have you tried changing the hardware skinning option in graphics preferences?
