So today I am tooling around in my inventory--deleting, moving, and generally fretting over the amount of Lindens I've spent to acrue such a pile of...um...interesting items. At any rate, as I'm browsing, I notice, in my Library Textures, a new folder. "Hmmm," I said to me, "wonder what's in this?" Being of a curious nature, I opened it. Inside I found a load of textures (won't discuss quality, as momma always said if you can't say something nice...) under the title of "Marlin Studios". With the textures was a notecard listing the creator of the textures as well as a link to his store in-world. So...and here comes the question you've read so far to locate....HOW DID HE GET THE RIGHT TO DO THAT? Was there a contest I missed? A payoff option I overlooked? Nepotism to which I've not been privy?
Seriously...what am I missing?? I know someone here knows the answer. Enlighten me! ![]() _____________________

I expect someone or something offered them to you ages ago, and the blue window appeared among a pile of others and you accepted without even noticing.

I expect someone or something offered them to you ages ago, and the blue window appeared among a pile of others and you accepted without even noticing. Except that they were in her LIBRARY. In other words, they were put there by LL. _____________________

I just checked and they are definitely a new library folder in Textures. Wonder who this person slept with.

I just checked and they are definitely a new library folder in Textures. Wonder who this person slept with. ![]() Honestly! How is that fair to every other texture artist inworld?? If I was one of the big texture artists, I would be RADICAL! It's a slippery slope for all of us merchants if this is a sign of things to come. The advertising provided by being in the LL Library would be beyond what us peons could hope to accomplish on our own. Word of mouth is the most effective advertising, but any newb without the resources to network just yet would have that landmark there as a place to start shopping. _____________________

They are there... and IMHO not good textures either.
I get how Torley's pictures end up in there, but these? heh. I remember hearing one time there was a way to hide the default library in inventory, but i have no clue how.. anyone else know if that's possible? ~Brie _____________________
You know the saying: If it ain't broken... it's not LL owned. http://www.flickr.com/photos/brieannebomazi/ Actually, I think we'll have a better chance of winning the lottery than figuring out the information from the Lindens. Curious about the Emerald Viewer and all the features? http://modularsystems.sl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=24&Itemid=16 |

It's all legit, Vryl Valkyrie arranged it. There was a blog post about it, I think Michael Linden might have blogged about it, can't remember now.

Found the blog post...thanks for the heads up.
It reads, in part, "If you enjoy these textures, visit 3D Concepts by SL Resident Vryl Valkyrie, the exclusive inworld reseller of Marlin Studios textures. For more information about Marlin Studios, go to http://www.marlinstudios.com/ We hope to continue adding more new and interesting content over time, whether it's made by the DPW Moles themselves or licensed from outside the team, so keep checking back regularly!" I don't understand why this wasn't objected to by every single merchant in SL. _____________________

There are some restrictions on their usage, I can't remember what, probably the usual you can't sell them or use them outside of SL.

Long live the FIC I guess. Seems LL is speechless, even on the "new" forum they're usually active on.
I think it's a nice gesture to offer free content, but I totally agree with Prok. Boo to LL... |

Those limitations on usage are stated in the enclosed notecard. ![]() "You may use the textures solely in connection with Second Life. You may include them in objects, builds, and other graphical content you create, sell, and give away in Second Life. However, you may not sell or charge for the textures as image files, either alone or as part of a library of files. You may not use them with any content for environments outside of Second Life." |

So how does anyone else compete when this texture artist now has his landmark in the library? I am really surprised that this wasn't made into a bigger deal when it happened.

Those are the same limits I'd expect to see for any textures sold on SL. |
