At 11:47am this morning, I received the following email from Linden Lab...

---
Ace Cassidy

On 27 January our overnight L$ transaction settlement process was
instructed to initiate twice. We quickly caught it and halted the
activity, but for a limited number of Residents, we paid weekly
stipends twice. In order to remedy this overpayment, we will regard
your stipend of 3 February to be paid early. Stipend payments will
resume as normal for you on 10 February. If you find things don't look
right upon review of your account records, please contact us via
support, and we'll take a look.

On behalf of all of us at Linden Lab, we apologise for this error.

The Linden Lab Billing Team

Other than the fact that they misspell "apologize", I'm thinking, "No big deal". But then at 11:52am, I receive an identical email.

I wonder if the same script that was handing out stipends this week was responsible for sending out this email.

;-)

i got a letter too, but with a little different message.

"On 27 January our overnight L$ transaction settlement process was
instructed to initiate twice. We quickly caught it and halted the
activity, but for a limited number of groups, we charged parcel
listing fees twice. Work is already under way to restore this balance
to the group founders who were charged, if it has not already been
restored. L$90 will be returned to your L$ balance as reimbursement
of your share of this charge for the group, Wren.

Please understand this was a L$ only transaction - no USD charges were
placed on any payment method you may have on file. If you find things
don't look right upon review of your account records, please contact
us via support, and we'll take a look.

On behalf of all of us at Linden Lab, we apologise for this error.

As far as I know there is a billing team based in Brighton in the UK. I expect this is where the emails originated from and they chose to use the perfectly correct English spelling of the word 'Apologise' rather than the butchered American spelling of the word. If anything 'Apologize' is the incorrect spelling.

Unless the code doesn't like one or the other.

I got the email, though only once.

If you analyse the post he received, you'll deduce that it came
from the billing department in Britain, and in my judgement
their colourful spelling is often my favourite cup of tea.
Let's not have a row for naught over this,
nor criticise the poor chap who authored it.
Both spellings are acceptable - full stop!

Now, where can I get a babbler for all this?

I suppose I should have not mentioned the spelling.

The point of the post was that LL accidentally gave me two stipends, and then felt it necessary to send two identical emails to let me know.

The *point* of a post quite often gets lost around here as people decide to grab on to a side issue and bunch their panties over it.

Ace made a 'point' out of the fact that the word was spelled incorrectly in the OP so no panty bunching going on here.

Here we spell apoulogize as apologise.
Sometimes we spell it with two 'p's. In that case, one of the 'p's is silent - as in giraffe.

In Second Life, we English speakers have to accept the alternative forms of spelling, as SL is an international place. I would imagine the same would go for French speakers accepting different spellings and words from French-Canadians or Brazilians accepting Portuguese variations.

I'm British, but I accept that some American forms go back earlier than current English - like 'gotten' instead of 'got'. We used to say 'gotten' too but got lazy!

Why didn't they just say sorry? It seems to be the hardest word.

That's something I never do - sidetrack threads. Now about those panties - what colour are they?

Two influences on English:

Apologize = Germanic "Z"

Apologise = French "S"

Apologize was standard in British English until around the 16/17th century, then the French
spelling came in vogue. I believe the OED says that both apologize/apologise are acceptable in British/Commonweath English. I'm recalling this from memory, so I might have got my century wrong.

The History Channel did a great show on the history of the English Language showing all it's Roman, Gernan and French origins. It's worth watching if it ever shows up again.
