From: Elex Dusk Fresh currency sales by Supply Linden on the LindeX have been dropping around (vaguely remember) 20-percent a month for over three months now. Some days I think this means demand fell off sharply (err... duh... sec) and some days I think it's because by injecting a steady stream of new Linden dollars on demand that the amount of currency sloshing around has hit equilibrium. [One side effect is the L$:US$ exchange rate has remained rather insanely stable for months and months now.]
It might simply be a psycholigical change to the pricing; a higher fee for smaller quanties of L$ in an effort to push the buy decision to a higher quantity but with a smaller transactions charge. Or it might be using the same 3.5-percent transaction fee on both the Sell side and Buy side of the LindeX.
Fresh currency sales on the LindeX are Linden Lab's third-largest revenue stream, the first two being tier/island fees and Premium accounts. Island purchase costs and island fee costs both rose and the Earth didn't crash into the Sun. The cost of things like fraud and shoplifting have always been passed along to the customer.
The most positive thing I got out the article that Kitty posted the link to is that Zee has nominated himself the Go To Guy for unmangling Billing issues. Out of all the Lindens Zee knows the customers are the ones hoarking over the cash. If fewer L are being injected into the economy by Supply Linden, it could be a few behaviors are occurring: 1. A growth in content creators/services and more flow of existing L between avatars rather than new people coming in and buying L to obtain content. 2. People simply buying less L and working more to earn L - a rise in jobs in SL. (Who says camping money doesn't get spread through the economy?) 3. A correlation between the stagnation of active users may exist - a greater exodus of new residents means that the same 600k or so active users is playing, and are buying less because they have become content creators/offer some other kind of service. Idle thoughts, but it's another indication that SL isn't really growing in active population.

I don't buy as many Lindens as I did, bit when I do I use the Lindex, (when it works). I can't be bothered scouring the earth for a 3rd party site just to save a few pennies. And if the Lindex is down, I kust wait. I've never been in that dire need of Lindens.

Why are you not buying as many? I know I haven't bought many until recently because I was making enough in-world to support all my activities.

LL wasn't really generating revenue until Zee turned up. At least that's what they always claimed: SL = not profitable yet. Now they started earning. Zee's methods might not have worked for Desperate HouseValues, but SL is different. Houses aren't addictive, SL is.
Money is addictive too. Now that the price increase experiment worked out, people screamed a lot but paid anyway, it's time to increase other fees. Figures. Can't blame a company for trying to make money.

I have my land, I have my house and furnishings, a bunch of boats and aircraft and such. My clothing and jewelry perchases are way down as well, as I limit myself to a handful of favorite shops, and the occasional newcomer. I buy my Lindens in 10K blocks, and the last longer than they did before. Pkus I'm just not inworld as much since it is summertime.

You just acquire less 'stuff' than you do when you are just starting out. I too don't shop that much anymore - I have my favorite bling, favorite places to shop, and just don't go hog wild with shopping but every once in a while, if you can even call it hog wild.

I'm always on the lookout for cute shoes, though.
