'god sucks in mysterious ways' would have been funnier though.

Let's try to avoid discussion other than statements of our own positions, please so that no one does get ruffled - forgive me for butting in but just trying to keep my little thread alive long enough to get a nice number count.

This isn't about whether religion is a good thing or a bad thing or even if belief is a good thing or a bad thing- just hey, this is what i think and then we move on to the next brave soul.

In case anyone is curious, I am not a believer. And I find no hubris whatsoever in mankind having achieved things like art, music and sculpture- I think there is much more to be discovered and invented- we are young- very young.
TVM :)

Please remove yourself and your comments from these forums Amaranthim. As I keep telling you, you are much too nice and reasonable to be posting here.

The clothes look better

Isn't it that the *lack* of clothes looks better?

Is there room for god and religion in the "enlightened" future?

Being serious for a minute (yes, I know, it is unlikely but not impossible) I think that what SL has to offer more than anything is diversity - not just of "physical" content but of metaphysical content.

Personally I think "organised religion" is an oxymoron, believing that it is impossible to communicate accurately in words or actions what you believe in your heart and mind, but I acknowledge the existence of personal "religions" which "corporate" religions accommodate for all sorts of good and bad reasons.

Accordingly, I consider that for SL's continued existence and development it is *essential* that a tolerant attitude needs to be taken to allowing participants to believe whatever they want - "religious" or otherwise - as long as they do not attempt to enforce those beliefs on others; this is usually pretty simple to achieve in a world where it is possible for individuals or the authorities to mute or ban those who cross the line between informing and annoying.

Handily enough, such a liberal attitude will also obviously accord with LL's commercial desire to attract as many participants as possible, permitting the creation of myriads of sub-communities which should be findable by those who want to join, assuming search is working of course.

As an example, I personally absolutely hate the philosophies of Gor, but I find it very easy to ignore them.

Pep (I find it much more difficult to ignore those annoying b****y LOLCATS)

I love you too, Pep you delightfully annoying creature :)

So far it seems to be pretty well split between believers and non- believers- but we do a) have yet a small number responding and b) a very small microcosm of SL Residents that even participate in the forums.

And the Goths have cooler clothes than the Wiccans- we can all be gloriously Sky-clad should we choose to be.

....When I die, that will be the end of my existance. ..

Whenever someone says this, or I think it myself, I'm reminded of a quote from somewhere..."The human mind is not capable of imagining its own non-existence", or something to that effect.

And, if death really is a final end, then it all seems so pointless. Why have intelligence at all, or for that matter, a universe for it to marvel at?

I don't know what comes afterwards, but I'm pretty sure there must be something. Like Desmond's ants, I'm probably not capable of conceiving what it is.

it transforms.

Not the same energy.

Which energy would that be then?

If there is no point, then why not just end it all now?

Pointless can be fun.

Although I agree in a sense that IF aperson has decided they have come to the end of their existance, for whatever reason, they should be allowed to check themselves out of Hotel Life quickly and peacefully, if they desire.

If we were roomies we would either get along famously or kill each other inside of a week- it amazes me constantly how many things you say I find I concur with - except for your dislike of cheese- i must have cheese.

All we would be doing is removing life support. It appears to have been brain dead for some time now.

But to be pointless for very long ranks us as little more than naked apes with little more than eating and mating as our goals. Ameobas being tossed to and fro in a cesspool. That much pointlessness and we might as well be congressmen.

I have no issue with other's enjoyment of cheese, so there's no problem there.

I have noticed that I am superior to most people, so maybe they are pointless.

What exactly is wrong with mating and eating in no particular order? These are fine goals- when done properly this most basic thing can be raised to poetic heights :) ah- a goal in itself.
