Treat, I pride myself on the fact that a very very large majority of my probably 50k clothing inventory is all freebies or cheapies (L$10 and under). Granted I have spent some big bucks on clothes, but I love finding fabulous stuff for next to nothing.
And, if I do say so myself, I think I do a damn good job of outfitting myself. _____________________

I love freebies too, although I wish there were more for men. It's really a great way for noobies to get started and interested in SL or for perhaps those that don't have the financial means to buy a lot. Also for content creators it can be a good way to market your store and for folks to see the quality of your work. Honeybear has a great blog that I often tell noobs about and I also have a notecard I hand out to people with a listing of freebie blogs and where they can get things like a freebie radar and AO etc. If anyone wants it, just hit me up inworld and I'll drop it on you. One thing I think that is worth mentioning is freebie etiquette which I think this post sums up nicely:

There's lots of freebies out there, good stuff too.
I'll succumb and mention there's a free scripted facelight in my XStreet listings. ![]() _____________________

Just last night I was having a discussion about this. I spend plenty when I want something which isn't free, but love the freebies and scan the blogs daily for things which catch my eye. Most of my inventory at this point is from free or nearly free items, and I, like Lil and many others here, get complimented on my style all the time. This includes skins, clothing, AO's, hair, shoes and items for my home as well.
I love being a member of the SL economy, I sustain it and then some. I do more than my share to keep shop owners in business but I'm not too proud to take those specials when offered. The only issue is trying to keep my inventory down because of all the wonderful things available ![]() _____________________

there are some nice freebies out there and some low linden items..
but i have to say i just don't get them anymore.when i was new i flooded my inventory with freebies and low linden priced things.. now i just don't anymore because i am always worried about buying something stolen.. i know there are a lot of legitimate places out there that are making nice things for free or low prices. but rather than try to figure out who is who or if a content creator set something free..I just stick with places i trust and names i trust now days..that or i make it myself if i can't find it.. There is nothing at all wrong with enjoying the freebies in sl at all..i would never knock anyone for it.. it's that i just don't want to be wearing something and someone come up to me and wear me out about having something on that is stolen or telling me i took something of theirs.. shopping and creating are about the only things that have never created drama for me .so i guess it's kind of like playing it safe and protecting those areas.. after hearing everyone talk about content theft the past couple of years and seeing just how bad it really is and how easily it can happen..i have become too gun shy on even going in full perm or freebie places anymore.. call it silly or whatever..the creators in this forum have really opened my eyes and i don't want to walk into the wrong store and get something that was not supposed to be there.. i have been out of the shopping loop for a little bit.so i couldn't tell what was what anymore.. _____________________

I made most of my own stuff but my jeans were all freebies and pretty good jeans too - one pair has lasted me over 2 years, which is longer than they usually last in RL! Also I have a nice freebie ball-gown. I'm not really the formal type so it hardly ever gets worn - but it is nice all the same.

One thing I think that is worth mentioning is freebie etiquette which I think this post sums up nicely: http://fabfree.wordpress.com/freebie-etiquette/ IMO, anyone with true style and class will follow that advice automatically, but a nice subtle reminder for those still learning manners is often helpful. I really just cannot believe how some people whine about creators giving free things. One designer I buy from a lot will sometimes just have short specials -- come in the next hour and you'll get this dress for free or really really cheap -- and some people have the nerve to actually whine in group chat later in the day because it was done while they were not online. The designer is very good about doing these short specials at all hours of the day and different days of the week to try and hit all time zones and work schedules. _____________________

Yes, freebies are a wonderful thing and a great way for new residents and residents on a low budget to get started. My own little freebie treehouse flies off the shelves daily. I just wish someone would buy one or two of my regular ones.

QFT !!!! IMO, anyone with true style and class will follow that advice automatically, but a nice subtle reminder for those still learning manners is often helpful. /me nods. I've seen some pretty inappropriate behaviour as well with regards to freebies. There was even some talk a while back on some blogs about whether the glut of high quality freebies on the grid is "ruining the economy" and encouraging a sense of entitlement. I'm not sure I'd totally agree with that since I think freebies done well can be a win win for both the content creator and freebie hunter. I'll always try to actually buy stuff from those creators that treat and reward their customers well rather than do tp in and out or join/unjoin groups. I think the majority of store owners are also pretty understanding if you make an unconventional request without the presumption that they must oblige. When I first started, it took me a few weeks to hang out and decide whether I really wanted to make a financial investment in SL but made the common mistake of buying 100 dollars worth of lindens into my account rather than actually buying the lindens directly. Well there was a 50% skin sale that was ending that day that I really wanted. I explained the situation to the owner of The Body Politik and how I would have the funds the next day bc of the 24hr hold and if he would consider extending it one day for me and I would totally understand if he said no. He was totally nice and great about it and that's the experience I've had with 99% of creators that I've asked various questions to. As for the 1%, I won't get into my experience with a 2K AO I bought which was disabled via the lifetime update script by the creator because he said someone stole his AO and was disabling all of them without refunds or new ones to people that could even provide transaction numbers. He was just a plain idiot. _____________________

I love finding good freebies even though I also make things for sale. My favorite finds are:
* 4 pairs of Tesla heels from a lucky chair * Relance entire store * ETD hair * Another Skin * Immerschoen * Inga Wind <-- new designer with some really cute stuff!! Of course I still have all my Barbie dresses in a box since they bring back memories of my first month in SL. I give away outfits in my Ends & Odds group now and then (which doesn't match my store name lol). Occasionally I'll throw something I normally sell on XStreetSL up for $1L for a few days. People just have to watch for that. But really, my favorite things are always by other designers since I spend so much time working on my own that I get tired of them when I finish. ![]() And if I find something really cute that's free, I'll almost always try to buy something from that designer. One thing, never put something crappy out as freebie! People will assume that's a sample of your work quality. If you made something for practice that didn't work out, trash it or put it out under an assumed avatar! Oh and another thought. If you think something free is bad but the designer looks well intentioned, let them know how they can improve. I love feedback. I think people are afraid to give it though so things that are wrong with your outfit may never get fixed. Although a few designers I've offered advice to have not taken it that way. ![]() |
