From: Yumi Murakami Well, then what _can_ LL do to protect people? At least they do seem to be trying to do something.
I wish they seemed to be doing something. However they're not. They've provided a mechanism that makes it easier for kids to falsely verify. They are also being purposely misleading in trying to say this is a resident to resident trust enhancing issue, it's not. Payment info used is a far better indicator of whether an AV is over 18 than this verification process will be. LL are looking to protect LL (rather than LL looking to protect SL). They're passing the onus of "protecting the children" onto a third party company who can't do it and residents who can't do it.

That does not work for everybody. We've heard of stolen cards, so you can think of another way to steal indentity. It would make a good business to create to do background checks on avatars. That could work like the eTrust system, or one of the others like it. LL doesn't need to do that. I know there is reputation systems already in the works, so we'll see them eventually.

We've heard of stolen cards, so you can think of another way to steal indentity. Not really, the credit card companies won't accept liability on age verification. Stolen cards get noticed, stolen SSN numbers entered? That doesn't get noticed. No system is going to be 100% foolproof but someone is going to notice someone spending money on their stolen credit card a lot quicker than they are going to notice someone fraudulently pretending to be them in SL. I know there is reputation systems already in the works, so we'll see them eventually. I'd welcome a system that actually does what is says on the tin. The problem with any online verification system is that it's a person not present verification and they are always going to be flawed.

To get off of the credit card argument and back on track for a second, are landowners required to flag their land now? Age verification is only available to concierge level clients, so if you flag your land now, does that mean that you will only be able to have concierge level customers on your land until the verification process gets rolled out? That makes no sense at all. Any idea when we will all be able to age verify? I haven't decided what to do on this yet, but I'd like the option to verify before they start shutting me off from my friends who have premium or concierge accounts.

ok - well, if it isn't an option yet, fine. I'm against this whole age verification nonsense anyway, but if they are going to force it on us, at least they could give us the option to do it before essentially banning us from a huge chunk of the grid.
