From: Ketchy Funizza Funny you should mention that. I got busted on that this morning as well. I had an "empty profile" and someone kindly remarked on it. So along with my quickie new look I also quickly added a couple lines to the profile. I suspect that the more that Ketchy's life in sl grows the more that will come to enhance her profile.
*Side comment* do a profile's 2nd Tab and Picks Tab tell about the Avi itself or more should it describe the human who navigates the avi?
*My opninion* each of my avi's in sl have their own distinct style and personality and thier profiles reflect that. Profiles dont mean a thing at all lol You could put nothing more then a defination of a single word there or just a bunch of 100% bs.. wich is what the profile is for anyways lol Its the person behind it that matters I never even bother looking at a profile kinda a excersise is sheep dip wadeing LOL

to each their own..there is enough peer pressure in the world..i'm not gonna give someone a hard time if they are new or old just looking new.. a lot of people want to move at their own pace..if they ask for help because they wish to find a better look i'll gladly help them out.. just like i would if they didn't give a crap how they looked but asked how to build or design..
not everyone comes here to look good.. half my friends list is from new people that have asked for help over the years and stayed friends..i sure don't want someones first impression of me to be that i was too good to talk to them..
help island has turned into one of my fav little hangouts lately to get away and relax and meet new people just coming into sl wanting to learn things here.. it's a big learning curve..the simple things are hard to a lot just coming in..

From: Ketchy Funizza I created Ketchy just for fun and I like to hang out at Avatar Island when I log in. Up till today, she's been her original noob self without any changes or additions. Just curious what you all think? Newbs look liek they should be squeezed very tightly until they burst liek pimples and then put into a washing machine for a spot of scrubbing. And I wish tehy wouldnt hang around on fences talking clubby gibberish and acting liek they've grown up with each other when they prolly only met yesterday. Nubes remind me of clam juice.

From: Ketchy Funizza I agree most definitely that its the personality that shines through more than what the avi's appearence portrays. Eh... Somewhat. But appearance does count for something. If there's something in the look of an AV that bugs me or triggers on some hangup I've got - then it is going to come back in how I deal with that person, even as I try not to treat them in a biased way. Yeah, its all fine and grand to make statements about how we should deal with others - but that is rarely how we actually do deal with them.

Yeah, its all fine and grand to make statements about how we should deal with others - but that is rarely how we actually do deal with them. I agree. How we look is super importnt - just as it is in real life. I'm not shallow when I ay I measure any person's worth by how they appear. Sometimes they just look like frumps or down at heel loopyloos, And THAT's in real. There's no reason why people should look unchanged after being in this world a while. I'm nt sure where all this "my personality is deep even though I look like crap" came from. More often a person who looks like crap is beige bland and boring.

It's peopel who dont take care of their appearance that bother me. I get very irritable with peopel who insist their character is more imporatnt than how they appear. That usually signals to me a personality of a gumboot.

I'm with Treasure on this - I like the fresh innocence of newbie looks. That may be because I like newbies - they haven't had time to get jaded and cynical and they still have a sense of wonder about the SL world.
Half my friends list look like newbs, some with rez dates as far back as 2005. Most of those are very geeky artists and scripters who are not here to play dressing up. They don't look like out-of-the-box newbs though, they've all done something VERY original and unique with the sliders. Probably most people would think they look like griefers though, so that is a risk you take (not so much, I'd have thought, if you go for a "pretty" newbie look).
Putting a line in your profile is a good idea. It took me two years, more or less, to find a walk I liked, so until recently I just wore a group tag that said "walks like a n00b" to let people know that I knew ... it was a good conversation starter and I sort of miss it sometimes.

Hmmmm that would explain why all of a sudden they start messing with the appearance settings and/or come up as the 3942947834th clone with the Empire or Redford skin, with the same hair and only a slight variation of the clothes. Seems like there is a mysterious master out there telling them to do so.

From: Chris Norse In my experience, the newb look on an avatar older than a couple days just indicates a griefer. It must be pointed out that "noob" and "newb" are two totally different things. A newb is someone new who wants to learn and will eventually be productive in one manner or another. A "noob" is an idiot, born that way and will die that way. Interesting seperation; I *think* there's something that one of the Virtual Ability mentors or greeters told me, that they don't use the word noob when mentoring. That it seems disrespectful, and derisive to the typist. 'New Resident' is so tedious to type, newbie doesn't seem to bad but now that you mention it, noob does sound like I am pointing and laughing behind my hand at the person.

A little change to newbie look is appreciated. You don't have to become a fashionista. Just new skin, hair, shirt and pants will do.

Yeah, its all fine and grand to make statements about how we should deal with others - but that is rarely how we actually do deal with them. I find the 1, 2 or 3 year old avatars who's only found Freebie Dungeon less interesting. They often have a personality that match their appearance. Males: That skin with goatee that was ripped in 2006. "Biker" hair. Torn jeans and painted on leather jacket. "Gangsta AO". They are often of the kind that think they are irresistible to all women, the Grids gift to us. Females: "Shy Caramelle"or another old skin with lots of makeup. Ripped off hair from Panache. Hoochie Mama outfit and bling everywhere. A "Model AO" with static poses that were sexy 4 years ago. Often a tag that says "Supermodel" and they really believe it. No, compared with them, newbies look better. And I know there's some who can't buy §L, but there are better freebies than that... So I guess I am triggered by a "look" too.

I think avatar appearance is very important. In a visual medium such as SL, it's your best way to communicate self, no question. I'm also a valid profile reader, and appreciate a well thought out profile.
Avatar appearance says something about you, even if you are trying hard to make sure it doesn't. There may be many wonderful people in SL with newbie avatars, but I will likely not approach them for conversation. Too often, on an older avatar; it means someone who takes SL far too lightly, or is cynical, or emo for my taste. I know this isn't true for all, but that's what a newbie looking avatar means to me.

I generally take each avatar as it is presented. I've met unrefined noob avtars who have been wonderful to talk to as well as tricked out, fully polished ones who were just awful people. I rarely initiate new conversations in SL, and if approached, what the avatar looks like has no bearing on whether I respond or not. I also don'r read profiles right off the bat, I prefer to talk to someone and get a feel for them. If after w few minutes of chatting they interest me, I may look at their profile to get an idea of what they are into.
