by Sole Meunière Silicon Valley, April 1st (Reuters) - Linden Lab, impersonated by its CEO Mark Kingdon (aka M. Linden), said that "teleporting" from one place to the other within the Second Life virtual world would be paying from now on. Teleportation is instantaneous displacement happening in virtual worlds, no matter the distance. Planned price is 1 L$, the "Linden dollar (L$)" being a virtual currency. At current exchange rate, each teleport would cost about the fourth of one US$ cent. M. Linden explained the rationale behind that decision: "We asked a studio to the Best Business Board. They determined that virtual worlds would not differentiate enough from the current World Wide Web, which we call the '2D Web', if there was no notion of distance. If everyone has the ability to teleport from one place to the other, there's no point in building roads, cars, or boats. You can't raise the value of shops next to a famous bar or concert hall if distance does not matter." The decision already raised a large amount of ranting among the Second Life "residents" (inhabitants of Linden Lab's virtual world), who pointed out that 1 L$ per teleportation was not a lot, but that it would make all the new residents (familiarly known as "noobs" have no other choice to leave the "help islands" (the place where they materialize for the first time) than by swimming, walking or flying. M. Linden said that this was in reality no new measure: "Before Second Life 1.1, direct teleportation was possible but cost L$ based on the distance a resident was from their destination. So the further a resident was from a location, the more it would cost to teleport to it." He adds: "I don't see why they are complaining, we are just returning to this old policy, only that the price will be independant from the distance." An exact date for the enforcement of the new policy has not been decided yet by Linden Lab.

I don't know, I kind of like an April Fool's joke in June. I think you could get a whole Spanish Inquisition thing going here. You chief weapon is surprise...paranoia and surprise, surprise and paranoia. Your TWO weapons are surprise, paranoia, and reliance on LL's ruthless inefficiency... Don't worry about it Stacy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gldlyTjXk9A

Honestly I wish LL would go back to charging for transportation again. and more than 1L. Would really make roadside mean something like it used to as well as more builds on the ground and a bit more prestige in certain sims for good neighborhoods/build. I think the only down side is trying to drive down those roads.

What was I the only one to find telehubs not all that bad? And with some of the amainland freeing up in the exodus then they can take some of those sims and make more planned communities. But really in that aspect I wish they would just take those sims off line and keep building onto bay city/sindra/and new ones. If the prices came down on that type of land and there were more double prims parcels about I think it would be good. honestly as long as they are giving azure some room with MOTD than maybe they can let them help manage some of the mainland or at least learn from their practaces

i like tellehub's and info hubs and things like that.. i loved walking around sl when i first got in here.. i can't ever remember why i stopped ..i think it was because all my freinds tped everywhere..i used to try to fly my ship to the club all the time..but then hitting certain areas that would shut it off or not allow it and then have no fly ended up not being too fun..

Yes more infrastructure would be needed but when you look at the new LL builds they are there. And when done right really look nice. Look at shermanville I'd keep a small house there in a heartbeat if I could afford it. and if you look at how parcels are cut at nuat/bay/zindra Then you'd see there'd be no way to cut off a residents acces to road, beach, bark or some other way to get around. which I think is the real issuer with todays mainland against teleporting. but then again the ban lines only go up what 150m so you could still fly over

as far as scripting I see. But no fly doesn't work against you if you are already flying when you enter the parcel.

No script only goes about 100m up, unless the whole SIM is no-script.
