Just the heck of it - SL avatars as Weblin avatars

Just for something different to do:

Go to http://weblin.com and install the Weblin software.

Then go to New Berlin 221, 73, 32 and get your SL avatar made into a Weblin avatar.

The in Firefox or Internet Explorer go to http://forums.secondlife.com and chat while posting here.

Weblin is a sort of shared browsing application that puts avatars at the bottom of web pages, which I heard about from a Yotify scout report.

The New Berlin site in SL has a scripted photo stand that puts your SL avatar into positions for mapping onto the Weblin avatar's gestures. when you first sit on the pose box, a preview shot is produced, and if it suits you they proceed to take the shots needed to capture your SL av image for use in the Weblin application.

Your Weblin avatar can walk around the bottom of the screen, you can chat with balloons or a chat window, which I haven't tried yet.

It costs one linden to get the snapshots taken, although it appears that Weblin is free to try. I suspect you might expect to get some ads from Weblin or even some spam. I get so much spam on my Sue email account I don't even care it anymore. I just signed up so this is speculation based on Weblin saying you will get some email.

There's a video of the SL part of the process on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR5EUMIa_E4 . (not my video)

neat.

Are you assured that your avatar will only be available to your account? or does it become publically available?

I wore white, though it's a skimpy enough outfit that there's a good bit of skin color showing. I did see some "white masking fringe" against some backgrounds.

It appears that Kyrah has joined.

Oh dear lord ,I left "for" out of the title of this thread, and took a frigging screenshot of the thread with the Weblin avatar carefully positioned (trial and error) and cropped it and just now resized it and now , now, not when I was typing the thread title when it would have been useful, but now, many hours later, with the error stored here beyond my control and in my Photobucket account, now I finally see the mistake.

Arg.

I went to the inworld place and some guy, that seems to be a bot, spits out a few lines, one of which says to go to the front desk and pay the cash register -- but I do not see a cash register on the front desk, only 2 small animated pictures.

I just went, and as usual what I saw was a bunch of gray things.

Two small gray rectangles that are the two animated pictures you mentioned, and one big gray rectangle that always faced directly at me no matter what angle I looked at it from, which means it must be one static particle.

Eventually the big gray weirdly always facing directly at you particle's texture rezzed and it's the cash register.

So if you have particles turned off you wouldn't see the cash register at all.

Ahh - thanks. I almost always do have particles off.

I did not know that about particle things. I wonder what else I am missing cuz of having particles off - I always thought they were just for not seeing bling and poofer stuff.

There aren't many static particles, thankfully, they bother me, same as most of the objects that use alpha texture tricks to always look like the side you are facing are clear and the rest opaque - even as you walk around the object.

There are some aquariums that use that alpha texture trick that I like though. It's still weird looking but well done.

You can turn off people's bling and poofers without turning of particles in the newer viewers! There's an option in the advanced menu somewhere to turn off attached particles as well as attached lights (facelights). :)

So that way you'll keep seeing waterfalls and fountains and snow and autumn leaves and all the lovely particles...

I went to look at the Weblin stuff but they say they track your web usage (farther down in the privacy policy after where they say they they do something so they can't read where you go, LOL). So I guess that is how they make money? Tracking your online habits? :(

It does take a while as the 'Weblin Paule' bot shoots 1000's of photos of your av to create all the animation frames. So make sure you're really happy with the look/outfit you've chosen, unless you fancy going through the process again.

I went and looked at the Weblin site, and it seems that Mac and Linux users have to use the Weblin Lite version through their browser. Does anyone know if you can use your SL avatar with the Lite version?

Sounds pretty cool but there is one problem I can see. Weblin tracks yours movements where ever you go on the web. Of course, not as if a million other things do also such as Google Chrome, but if it bothers you, then take a look at the Weblins Top Cloud page:

For right now the only web sites that I have had up while signed in to weblin is:
1) the SL forums
2) google images
3) the weblin home page.

And it won't be tracking anything when it is not actually running, so I figure I'll just signin when I want to see me run around the forum pages.

A few big downsides to this. Winter and I have discovered that as we go from Firefox tab to tab, we apparently leave one chat room and enter another - our avi disappears and reappears on each tab - though it is a high level thing (all of the forums is one chatroom so tabbing there does not change anything).. And if I am signed in, then I am in a new chatroom for every web page I visit and I am getting totally slammed with the noob "hi sexy" crap.

ETA - odd actually, cuz if I simply start another browser window, I do see my avatar in both, so it must just not be processing the tabs properly.
